Really?  Sherman sitting on the sideline in the middle of the Super Bowl and mocking Revis....and you don't understand how anyone can dislike him?

Talking trash in a game is a pretty common occurrence in pro sports. The Pats have done it quite a bit over the years and it never bothered me.

Trash talking on the filed to a player is one thing, This was Sherman mugging for the cameras basically saying "i told you i'm better". It was his Shannon Sharpe "Call the national guard" moment

I (along with 2500 other coaches) was at a Q and A with Larry Bird. He said trash talk was part of the game, and even considered part of the entertainment for the big spenders in the front rows. He said in his famous fight with Dr. J he had made the mistake of making it clear to everyone in the stands and on TV he was mocking the Doc. Bird said he was wrong and cited a universal rule that you can say almost anything, but publicly mocking was unprofessional.  To me that is what Sherman did. It was weak sauce, especially since his team lost.

There's a fine line with trash talking.  You want to be able to upset the other guy enough that you get him out of his game, but not so much so that you inspire him to play harder to rub your nose in it.  No idea what Sherman says on the field and what impact it has, but his public trash talk at least seems like the unsubtle kind that gears other people up.  I wonder if Brady was thinking of the "you mad bro" thing at all during the 4th Quarter.

If he was then Sherman won.  I'd be very surprised to learn that Brady (or anyone on either sideline) had that comment from years ago in their head; Sherman included.

Different people take motivation from different things. You never know how people will react. I know one dude who would think of every girl who ever dissed him before competing. Other guys like a hard slap across their face. Some laugh right before and right after. Marciano used to sleep before fights.

I could see Brady focusing on that public slight and loss to get motivated, and if he was able to do that in a focused way, I don't think that means Sherman won. If your trash talk motivated your opponents, you lose whether you're "in" their heads or not.

For Christ's sake, Jordan used to use that he was cut from his HS team (whether or not that is true doesn't matter) as motivation.  He brought it up in his goddamn HOF speech!

These guys use every and any slight to motivate themselves.  If you don't think Brady had Sherman's words from 2012 in the back of his mind during the SB, you're crazy.

If Brady is thinking about the comments during the 4th quarter of the game and not about how they execute their game plan then Sherman has won.

You didnt think about motivational comments during your fights or between rounds, right?  I know I never did while playing Lacrosse and Hockey.  I used them to ramp me up before the game but once the game started I focused on executing the tasks at hand not about what someone did to piss me off.

Read what I wrote.  I didnt say Brady didnt use them I said that I'd be very surprised if Brady was using them to motivate himself on the sideline during the 4th quarter of the final game of the season ...

I didn't even blink when I heard it, it wasn't his sober assessment of Brady's career to date, just a way to pump up his teammates and encourage them to step on the opponent's throat in the middle of the Superbowl.
No different than Pedroia coming back into the dugout and yelling "he ain't got shit" after Verlander buckles his knees with a 12-6 curve, or whatever. And we all love Pedroia, as we should.

It's really asking a lot to expect Sherman to be deferential to Brady, or even factually accurate, when he's woofing with his own guys to psych them up. "Now that Brady fellow, he's quite the chap...." Come on.

The Patriots mocked the Eagles in the super bowl. They mocked the Chargers after the 06 playoff win. None of it bothered me.

Interesting that this article about Bird's legendary trash talking showed up on my Yahoo feed just now. Dominique talking about one of the first times he played against Larry.

“One of the first times I ever played against him, I went out for the opening tip and I went to shake his hand. He just stood there and looked at me stone-faced with his hands behind his back,” Wilkins said recently.

“I was like, ‘Whoa.’ Then we were getting ready for the tip and he says to me, ‘You don’t belong in this league, Homes.’ I couldn’t believe it, but it happened so fast, I didn’t know what to think.

“Then they had the ball and I was on him and he said, ‘I don’t know why they got you guarding me, Homes. You can’t guard me.’ Then, whap, he hit a 3. Then he came down again and said, ‘They made a mistake putting you on me, Homes,’ and he took another 3.”
[…]
“Then a little while later, I came down on a break and he was backpedaling. I just went right after him. I jumped up and he tried to challenge, but I took that right through the rim. He fell and hit the basket support.

“He got up and said, ‘I like you, rookie. You’ve got(guts).’ I was happy for a second, and then he said, ‘But I’m still going for 40 on you tonight.’ ”

He then paused the story, stepped back and smiled.

“But I got him,” Wilkins said. “He only scored 39.”

Sure I did.  And when I played hockey, too.  You get time between rounds, between shifts, and between plays or while the defense is out there.  I trained out of Hagler's old gym.  He was legendary for motivating himself by focusing on slights or just pure hatred of his opponents.  He'd write crap all over his mirrors, on his shirts, everything.  Again, everyone's got their own thing, but if we had a way to resolve the wager, I'd bet there was a moment in the 4th quarter - maybe not when he's getting under center or dropping back to pass - but some moment where Brady thought to himself how bad he'd love to beat Sherman and that got him just a bit more geeked up.

Just to take it a step further, how is Sherman's shit-talking of Crabtree different from one of my all-time favorite Patriots moments?

IIRC, San Diego talked shit about New England in the press prior to that game and talked about playing in the AFC championship game the week prior, despite the NE game standing in their way.

It may be academic, but the Patriots, as a rule, do not speak ill of opponents PRIOR to the game being played, and generally don't after the game, either, unless provoked.

The Eagles (Fred Ex in particular) did the same.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that Tomlinson's complaint was that the Pats were mocking Merriman by doing the sack dance which he did to mock the QBs he sacked.
