Reported by Jack Curry, no details yet, but they've had their eye on him for years.

For Ramon Flores and one other player, not even sure how Ackley fits on the roster. Is he even an upgrade on Brendan Ryan?

Ramon Flores and Jose Ramirez is the deal, I guess at least that clears a 40 man roster spot.

I think they've got to add pitching of some kind at this point, but the 40 man spot will be more valuable in the offseason. They need to thin out the ranks of relievers, they can't protect them all.

It doesn't bode well for Refsnyder's future in pinstripes, though.

Actually he has good career numbers at Yankee Stadium plus good career defensive numbers at 2B, so I guess he replaces either Ryan or Drew?

Career at Yankee Stadium in 63 ABs, he is .296/.397/.481, a .878 OPS.

Get that razor out (I hate this dumb antiquated team rule so much):

Well, he's a former top pick and left handed hitter with little-to-no big league success (with the bat) so he'll probably only hit 15-20 bombs down to stretch.

I thought he was primarily an OF now, no?

He is, but that's because Cano plays 2B every game. He has barely played there in two years though, that is certainly true.

Odd move, curious to hear Cashman talk about it.

I pretty much like it. Goatees would be fine, but these bushy beards make every ballplayer look alike.

Let's be honest, the Red Sox looked like team Duck Dynasty a few years back

No lie, I haven't been able to tell apart a white member of the Yankees bullpen since Joba.

Haven't read any details of that yet, but it sure seems like a phantom DL stint to get an extra pitcher up, since they really got Ackley for next year more than this one.

Maybe I was wrong, now they're saying he has a herniated disc and got an epidural and will be out a minimum of 3-4 weeks, if not the whole season.

I was wondering why Ackley hadn't been playing at all for the Yankees after the trade. I guess I missed the Yankees putting him on the DL.

Judging from the spray chart posted upthread, Ackley looks like a better fit for Fenway than Yankee Stadium. Looks like a lot of flyballs to LF that could turn into Fenway doubles.

It was an odd move from the start, my only guess is that they think he could be an upgrade on the current 2B options in 2016, Cashman has wanted him for a while but hard to see what he sees.

Ramon Flores is hurting baseballs for AAA Tacoma so far, by the way. He is hitting .455 in 41 PAs, a 1.258 OPS. Maybe NY should have been even less active at the deadline? :)

I figured the Yankees viewed Ackley more as an upgrade over Garrett Jones for the rest of this year: a guy who could play the OF corners and 1B with a little pop and especially be a defensive upgrade over Jones. Then he'd probably slot in as a platoon partner/defensive replacement for Refsnyder next season.

This was basically what they said after the deal, but they have 4 OFs already and then Heathcott and Flores (pre-trade) if guys get hurt, so I don't think he's an upgrade there. 1B he has only played 79 innings in the bigs, and none since 2013. It's not hard to be an upgrade on Garrett Jones as a backup lefty 1B, but not sure Ackley is the guy I'd pick.

Flores with a compound fracture of his ankle, done for the year, unfortunate as he was crushing in AAA.

Ackley playing 2B for third game in a row, homer and single first two times up tonight, hitting .467 for Scranton.

He never made sense as an OF option to me, I thought the actual plan was always to hope that he can win the 2B job in spring training.

1.145 OPS for NY in very limited playing time so far (27 PAs), partly because he was out from Aug 2-Sept 9 with a lumbar strain. He has been forcing his way into the lineup recently, though: he started at 2B the last two games and rewarded Girardi with a big 3 run HR tonight and a triple off Syndergaard on Saturday.
