I mean, it makes sense if you think you won't be able to re-sign Bryce Harper after 2018.

They have a bugaboo to get over in just winning a playoff series. They don't need more talent in that division, they need to find the right players/manager to get over that hump.

Buster Olney says Steve Pearce will be signing with Toronto. Does this take them out of the EE running?
I think it does. Unless they plan to use Pierce in a Chris Young type role. Astros still could be in this. Boston will probably make an offer if the price is right. Seattle maybe?

Hill revived his career and got paid, good for him.

Melancon could not survive in the AL East, so meh to him getting that money

What does this even mean? If they don't need additional talent, what would they be adding in the "right players" in this scenario?

He's been, easily, a top 10 reliever in the game over the last 4 seasons and probably a top 5. 4th in fangraphs WAR, 3rd in ERA, 8th in FIP, 9th in xFIP, 5th in K/BB (including 4th in BB/9), with one of the best cutters in the game.

Ian York did a quick chart in the main board bullpen thread showing that he made a major change in his pitch usage around the 2012 season and had figured something out by 2013. It would be asinine to simply assume that struggles in 2012 while in Boston would mean he can't pitch in the division 5 years later, even without mounds of evidence that he's not only a different pitcher now but is by every measure one of the very best relievers in the entire sport.

He had four outlandishly bad games to start the season, went on the DL, then was fine. Take a look at his game log.

edit: Honestly, the best case against Ben Cherington, AFAIC, is selling low on Melancon.

No one is going to give Chapman six years, but also his velocity has shown no signs of dipping so far, the guy is an athletic freak and not really comparable to any other player in the history of the game.

Average FB velocity:

2010: 99.6
2011: 98.1
2012: 98.0
2013: 98.4
2014: 100.2
2015: 99.4
2016: 100.4

Absolutely not. Because what is he once he can't crack 100 with the fastball?
A domestic abuser? Actually, he is one regardless of what he touches on the radar gun.

I know it won't happen but I wish a team would sign him so he can support his family but stipulate that he has to attend real substantive counseling sessions.

Any team paying up for the guy is taking a pretty decent risk.

You're right, I almost wrote (except for the crazy Miami owner), but I think they are going to get Jansen.

All true, but I'm not sure how much joints and ligaments ultimately care about either athleticism or freakishness, and 7 years is an awful lot of time spent being the world's fastest pitcher.

The White Sox and Nationals are far down the road on a trade that will send Chris Sale to the Nationals in exchange for Lucas Giolito, Victor Robles and a low minor leaguer. Reynaldo Lopez and Koda Glover will not be in the proposed deal. The structure of the deal was first reported by Ken Rosenthal.

How can CLE be outbid for Beltran at 1/16 and Holliday at 1/13 and have the money to sign Encarnacion? Odd.
Perhaps they weren't bidding on Beltran or Holliday at all? Perhaps Encarnacion has been their target all along, and if they don't end up with him, they think they'll still have Napoli (or someone else) to fall back on.

I hope this happens. Mostly because I don't want the Red Sox blowing their prospect load on Sale. I'm not entirely opposed to moving Moncada, Devers, Kopech or Groome but I'd rather not move 3 of them in the same deal and to top Robles and Giolito, they'd have to do just that. Or include a major leaguer like Benintendi or JBJ. This would also keep Sale out of the AL East (specifically New York who also have the chips to get him), so it would be a win/win, IMO.

This is possible of course, but it was reported that they were in on both Beltran and Holliday, after they both signed. Beat reporters seem to think EE to CLE isn't realistic as he's out of their price range, as I guessed in my original post.

The Indians/Encarnacion conversation just polite. He'd be way too expensive for that market, in all likelihood.

Sources: #Indians indeed reached out to Encarnacion, as @hoynsie said, but serious questions remain about whether CLE will meet EE’s price.

I'm going to stick with my prediction of either MFY or Houston. This seems similar to the Ellsbury thing a few years ago where his market seemingly dried up and then boom the Yankees came out of nowhere.

In order for the Sox to be involved they would need to move Buchholz and others. Just don't see it happening.

Surprise team on EE: Colorado. Virtually no payroll commitments. The live with his D at 1B, maybe give him a two year opt out as an incetinve so he can hit the market after hitting 50 HR for a couple of years.

Yankees had a different organizational philosophy when they signed Ellsbury.

Yeah, after the Holliday signing, there is virtually zero chance NY will sign Encarnacion. The reports are that they liked him a lot but they are done giving big deals to guys in their mid-30s, obviously specific circumstances going forward could change that but not this offseason.

How about two of them?

The price paid for Sale stings, but feels fair. I was really looking forward to the Moncada growing up with the Sox. I guess he's still going to, but... well...

Cue The Incredible Hulk walk away music.
It helps if you picture him as the Cuban Wily Mo.

Re: Yankee affairs. Tampa is letting Cashman have his way for the first time in a long time but the minute it fails, or if the Red Sox win it all next year, they'll scrap this prospect hoarding plan and go back to throwing their money away.
