I figured this would happen, and it's the right move, but it's still sad. One of the greatest Patriots.

Started with a title, ended with a title.

And just because they didn't pick up his option doesn't mean he won't be back.

That is correct I would imagine it is still very likely he will be back, picking up that option just didn't make any sense.

Yeah, I could see them still working out a deal, but I imagine Vince will look for bigger $ elsewhere first.   I'm not sure what would be out there for him vs. a reworked deal with the Patriots, but I could see some team looking for "veteran leadership" pony up for a year or two.   Truly an all-time great Patriot.

Love everything about this guy. Everything.

Also, have to hope this is good news on the Revis/McCourty front.

According to Miguel, cutting him before June 2 results in a 2015 cap savings of just over $7 million.

Of course the door is not shut on Wilfork returning but that letter leads one to believe he doesn't think he'll be back.

Yup, not unexpected, but a sad morning anyway.

If they are only saving $7 million by cutting him, I think that reduces the likelihood of him coming back.... what are the chances that he signs for less than that $7 million?

He's probably so beloved that he won't get ridiculously trashed on his way out, like so many other Boston athletes.  And that's saying something.

We'll leave the light on for you, Vince.

I doubt highly he'll be back given the Pats current cap situation. They are basically 16 million under with Revis unsigned. They can create some space, but not a ton, and they have some holes at key positions (CB/Safety/OL etc). The Pats are going to be playing with less talent next year unless they destroy the draft.

Let's see how the market plays out for his services at his age. I can't see him scoring a huge deal. Also I think he may consider family if he possibly comes back at a major reduced rate. He has a son that attends Xaverian Brothers HS. Not sure he wants to uproat the entire family,

Reiss says they're saving just over $8m but not picking up the option. That's about how much he made in 2014 depending on what incentives he hit (probably all of them).

If he wants to stay I could see them working out a deal in the $5-6m range.

I have a hard time imagining him getting a contract with an average annual value approaching that. He'll be 34 in November, and I'm not sure his traditional skill set matches what most NFL defenses are doing nowadays.

He made an interception near the goal line to clinch the Oakland game this season.  You could argue that if he didn't do that, Oakland may have won and the season may have played out differently.

For the cap experts on here -

If they were going to keep him could they have just restructured his contract rather than releasing him? Or would that have cap repercussions?

Here's the guy who should throw out the first pitch at Fenway...I pray this happens.  That goodbye letter comes from the heart and clearly not through the filter of a publicist.  He deserves to hear a huge roar of approval.

The ripples that cascaded though the league after that pick has been studied and is now commonly known as the "bellyflop effect."

I hope he doesn't end up in Buffalo as the anchor to Rex's new 3-4 defense. That would be brutal.

Agree with you guys. Necessary move, still a sad day.

As that draft unfolded, I don't remember who in front of us needed a nose tackle, but when they didn't take him, I was ecstatic thinking he'd fall to us. When the Pats were on the clock I knew it was going to be Vince. He's been everything I'd imagined and more. Great Patriot. Sad day.

And one of the draft experts in the studio (can't remember which one) could be heard saying "and the rich just got richer"

Great player who deserves a lot of credit for fighting back from a major injury to be a key contributor on a title team.  Not picking up the option was a smart football move, but still gonna miss big Vince if he's elsewhere next year.  One of the guys that made me most proud to root for this team.

You mean they would have played the AFCCG in Indy, used their ballboys, and we could have enjoyed the two weeks before the Super Bowl?

Echoing others, just a class act all the way around. Thinking back to watching him slide on draft day 2004, holding my breath that he'd somehow get to us. Was hoping for a solid contributor who could eventually take over the Ted Washington role. Safe to say, he exceeded all expectations.

Thanks for everything, big guy. Would be great to see you back somehow, but either way, looking forward to seeing you fitted for a red jacket.

Sounds like it was handled very well communications-wise in both directions.  Vince is one of the classiest guys who has come through New England and I hope that he ends up finishing his career here as well.

Meanwhile, easy to imagine the Pats are sniffing around a variety of others...

A great Patriot, Vince Wilfork.  I truly hope they work something out and he's back.  But I completely understand this move.  Had to be done, really.

You know, it's touching that he (obviously) wrote that statement himself and didn't get it all sanded down and dull by some P.R. guru or anything.   Just letting it all hang out there.

Later, Vince.  Thanks for the memories.

This would be the same fate for Jerod Mayo if he didn't have the guaranteed money for injury.  I'm very sad about this move, but the NFL is cruel and ruthless and it's a business.  This was the best move for the football team as Belichick likes to say.  As many have said, I hope he comes back on a cheaper deal but I don't think he'll be in a Patriot uniform again.  Can't wait to see him in a red jacket to go into the Pats HOF and then the gold jacket for the Pro Football HOF.

He's the guy who probably most symbolized the Patriots defense after Bruschi and Harrison retired.

Hopefully Devin takes over that spot for the next 5-6 years or so.

Think he's really a Pro Football HOF candidate? I'm not really sure about that.

Ya, the HOF is a real tough case to make.

On one hand, he's a 2x Champ and has 4 Pro Bowl appearances.

On the other, he's only been a first team All Pro once (2012), and his counting stats aren't very impressive (16 sacks, 3 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles).

His role as a run-stuffer/keystone to the DL just doesn't show up in the numbers, and that's gonna make it hard to make a case to a lot of writers.

There just aren't a lot of contemporary D lineman that get into the HOF.  Reggie White?  Cortez Kennedy? Chris Doleman?  John Randle? All of those guys had gaudy stats.  Over 100 sacks, in most cases.

Accept the reality, he's gone.

If there was a restructure then Vince wouldn't have sent that Tweet out. He knows what the Pats offered and knows he isn't returning.

Is there really even a ballot for the Patriots HOF?

Edit. Nevermind. Apparently there is. I always assumed it was just a few guys (Krafts, Belichick) deciding who should go in.

Interesting case for sure...he's been considered the most/one of the most dominant NT in the NFL for a decade on the league's most high-profile team over that period of time. I could see him getting in, but agree it would be a departure from the norm.

Class act all the way around. That's a lot of class.

If you leave indeed, please go to Jacksonville, Tennessee, Philadelphia or Washington, not a division rival. (Or a conference rival in Pitt) We want to see you one more time next year though.

11 years with the Patriots is a great run. He started with a championship and looks like he will end his time here with another. He came back strong from what can often be a career ending injury for a big man and for the cherry on top, his son played for Xaverian on their MA state championship team last season.  Wish him and his family nothing but the best.

I'm not a Pats fan (I would describe myself as Pats-friendly or Pats-curious); from an admirer's standpoint, I wonder if he has a claim as Best Patriot Ever.

The obvious candidate for that is TB, of course, but I think there's a strong case to be made for Wilfork.

Very classy guy, hard worker, phenomenal talent.  Hope it turns out well for him wherever he ends up.
