Yeah. I think the guy threw the flag but was going to ask for help and the ref made the call too quickly.

However, that still means when he got help someone told him to pick up flag. Perhaps due to the facemask by Pettigrew.
They would still announce that two penalties occurred and offset one another. The face mask was never mentioned.

Q: What explanation did they give you for picking up the flag?

Caldwell: Not good enough of an explanation. Let's leave it at that.

And then Jim walked away and said "let's punt"

What a loser he is.

I am out of here. Biggest call was the DPI pickup. It was DPI and it was defensive holding as well. Not good.

I think that should've been offsetting DPI/OPI, looking at it again.

Which is a significant difference, as they would replay third down.
Any unsportsmanlike penalty?

Said he thought about going for it there, but didn't because they were still ahead. Figured a punt would pin the Cowboys deep and the defense would hold

Yeah, I think he blew it by not forcing the issue at the time.  Saying something after the fact doesn't accomplish anything - they're not going to change the call, the Lions still lose, he'd probably be fined the week after the Super Bowl when no one cares, and he's not going to produce a productive change in officiating by protesting one call.
I'm with you. There's a time and place to throw a fit for effect and that was such a time. To follow it up with an attempt to draw them off rather than nail the coffin shut despite the confusing events and then a 10-yard punt should be a firing offense. Passion is often an annoyance (e.g., the most recent 49er coach), but it was warranted there.

If the defense would hold, not punting is the better call. That's a dumb answer and a dumb coaching decision in a key moment.

Yeah, that's the problem here. In the playoffs, you have to take the victory. And you figure that anything on the fourth down play that might have been questionable could spin in Detroit's favor at that moment

Earlier in the week, TMZ released a video of Jerry Jones's son Stephen partying with several people, including what appears to be Dean Blandino, the NFL's head of officiating. According to at least one person Jason La Canfora spoke to in the league, that is "definitely" him in the blue, skipping out of a Dallas Cowboys party bus.
On first blush, the video is not all that interesting. It's just Stephen Jones and his entourage hanging out with several women on a bus with a bunch of Cowboys logos on it on the Sunset Strip. NFL executives are livid, however, because Blandino is looking so chummy with a team executive and owner's son.

So the NFL got all the results they wanted from this weekend.
A raging controversy. An unwatchable game. An interesting game for a half that turned into a blowout during the second half. and an uninteresting game earlier today defined "blah".

Worst WC weekend I can recall.

What's amazing is that only the NFL could botch the decision to allow Suh to play, then have the Lions garner sympathy over a blown call

Make some room David Stern. A fitting conclusion to this season, though we have a month left.

Ravens > Steelers? I think the Steelers have a much larger fan base (especially nationally).
Right, but but the Ravens winning also made next weekend Indy vs Papa Johns, which is a huge storyline, and Ravens vs Pats is likely a bigger story than Pitts vs Denver, so that worked out well for NFL and their scribes.

Detroit still had a chance to win the game. Stafford came up short on the final drive and Caldwell punts on 4th and 1.  The DPI call is too easy of an out for the Lions.

As it played out, yes. But there's no way of knowing what happens had the penalty been called

Caldwell doesn't go for 4th and half a yard in plus territory against a shaky defense
Shank punt
Dallas still has to drive the ball down the field and score a TD against an extremely good defense that had sacked Romo five times and Detroit had them 3rd and 7 on the TD play
Detroit gets the ball back again with two timeouts and the 2 minute warning with a chance to win against the same shaky defense again.

The refs botched (personally I think it should have been offsetting penalties and 3rd and 1 again) it but you are 100% correct that they didn't hand the game to Dallas or whatever the meme going around is.

What? DPI makes it 1st down on the Dallas 45. If Detroit just gets a FG out of that drive they go up 23-17 with 5-6 minutes left.

No, you don't understand. Had the penalty been called, or offsetting penalties called, nothing would have changed the rest of the way

The picked up flag play cost Detroit 3 points at the very least, and another couple minutes of game clock.  They have those three points and they need a FG to win.

That call aside the refs blew numerous other calls IMO.  The Dallas OL was holding on every play, which happens a lot, but you have to be kidding me on some of the non-calls.  Here's the Dunbar play hold that was not called:

So yeah, Dallas drove down the field vs a good D with a lot of help from the incompetent at best or corrupt at worst refs.

To me the DPI in the Bengals game was far worse and didn't get called.  Would have changed that entire game.

What's equally egregious is the Detroit player not getting called for grabbing the DB's facemask on that play...he had it for a couple yards at least...which probably pulled the DB off balance creating the DPI in hte first place.

Agreed, then call offsetting penalties and replay the down

Refs miss or let offensive holding calls go?  Wow that never happens.  Never.
Fine.  How often are penalties broadcast throughout the entire stadium and then overturned?
