Here you go. What is your all star pitching staff for the Red Sox?

The rules are simple:
  • The player must have played at least 3 years with the Sox
  • The player must have been with the Sox from 1970 forward.
  • The player pitched for at least 3 years with the Sox.
  • List both your starting rotation and bullpen.
  • Can be 12 or 13 player staff
Starters:
Pedro
Clemens
Tiant
Lester
Wakefield

Bullpen:
Uehara
Papelbon
Bill Lee - Long
Timlin
Stanley
Lowe
Lyle
Okajima

At a quick glance, I think you've got Wake and Lee in the wrong categories - Wake pitched out of the pen, and Lee, IIRC, was pretty much only a starter.

Olde time folks are likely to argue for Radatz and Cy Young - maybe for the Babe and/or Parnell as well...

Thanks for bringing baseball to mind through the snow and on the eve (or actually, the eve of the eve of the eve) of pitchers and catchers.

Gotta be Bill, no? With the exception of Pedro™, it's all last names.
Yeah, but the fact that it's in the bullpen points to Smith. Bill did have a couple of years as a reliever in 71-72, but they weren't anything special. Seems like an odd choice if it's him.

Here is a reference at the player size over that time span.
https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=sta&lg=all&qual=500&type=8&season=2017&month=0&season1=1970&ind=0&team=3&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0

It's really hard - because you have obvious guys at the top. And then you have guys like Mike Boddicker who was pretty damn effective in his short time with the club vs. Beckett who had pretty extreme ups and downs. I had already posted in the other thread but am going to revise it.

For once, I don't think WAR should factor in too much.

Not a bigger Garces fan than me, but he belongs nowhere near any list with All-Star in the title!

Funny exercise - I had too many starters and was scratching for relievers...

For the 'pen, after the first 4 (top ERA+ for relievers that had more stints than cups of coffee), I went with sentimentality/longevity.

If I'm playing a game in my mind with these players, these other guys MUST be in the bullpen. In the infinitely long game, Wake ends up pitching every inning in my mind, anyway. Fitting, since he's thrown more Sox innings than literally anyone else, ever.

The wrong side of the bridge....
As with the position players, I'm turning the 1970 cutoff into 1980 because that's when I started following:

Starters:

Pedro
Sale
Lester
Beckett
Hurst

Bullpen:

Papelbon
Koji
Kimbrel
Lowe
Stanley
Burgmeier
Oki

This was pretty easy--the hardest thing was Wake vs. Hurst for the last rotation slot. Both sentimental favorites, but Hurst had a better peak. The only other choice that required thought was Oki vs. Timlin for the last bullpen slot. I went for righty/lefty balance.

Starters:
Pedro, Clemens, Schilling, Beckett, Lester
Bullpen
Paps, Koji, Gordon, Lowe, Okajima, Hurst, Wakefield

(My heart really wanted to follow Oppo's and Savin's lead in blackballing Clemens, but he was one of the best. (And mine were 1986+, since that's when I've been following; sorry Tiant and Lee).

I don't think Sale qualifies as he's not been here three years yet?

My list:

Pedro
Schilling
Clemens
Lester
Beckett

Timlin

Koji
Lowe
Wake
Tazawa
Okajima
