Who is pitching Saturday night?

So I am going to Baltimore to catch a couple of Red Sox games. Looking forward to Saturday night, except who is going to pitch? As of now we have Johnson tonight, Porcello tomorrow, Eovaldi Friday, Price Saturday afternoon (make-up game) and Sale on Sunday. That leaves "nobody" for Saturday night unless they want to pitch Pomeranz on short rest which is very doubtful.. So who is it gonna be? Velasquez, some minor leaguer, Brock Holt?

Good question.

Teams are allowed a 26th man on doubleheader days. Cuevas started on Saturday for the Pawsox and Justin Haley went on Sunday.

If you see one of them skipped tomorrow or Friday, you might have your answer

They could call up a bullpen arm, and use Velasquez to start, and then send them both down Sunday when they activate Sale (someone is going to have to be sent down at that point).

Dark horse Candidate: Chandler Shepherd. He's already on the 40. He's scheduled to start tonight in AAA though. Cuevas is expected to pitch tomorrow. Justin Haley on Friday. If it's not someone already on the club, it's one of those 3. Watch those AAA pitching logs.

The wrong side of the bridge....
Cuevas has been very strong of late: 2.90 ERA with 1.00 WHIP, 10.2 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 since July 1. A bit heavy on the HR (1.45 HR/9), but that's about the only thing to complain about.

OTOH, Haley seems to be really good at suppressing FB, which might make him a good choice for a HR factory like the Yards.

I'd guess it's one of those two.

Initially I was concerned with the concept of a bullpen game because you're likely committing at least 3 pitchers to that game before a pitch is even thrown on the back end of a double header. Yeah I know that in a regular game you're likely to throw at least 3 guys, but if Cora prefers the extra call up to be a position player I worry a bit about taxing the pen. That said a quick look at the schedule shows the Sox with both next Monday and Thursday off, so perhaps that lessens my concern.

Do the Sox have to name a 26th man before the double-header starts? Or can they wait until after game 1 so they can see if they need an extra pitcher?

They're running with 13 pitchers as it is, and have been for a few weeks. I think Cora wants the extra position player so he can have a four man bench and not have to play as many position players in both games.

I don't know the answer to that, but if the team wants the roster flexibility for game 1 they would need to add him before that game. And they can make moves between games if needed

The rule is that they can add the 26th man for both games if the double header is scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. If the double header is scheduled less than 48 hours in advance (like making up a rain out the next day), the 26th man can only be added to the roster for the second game.

Also, I don't think they can change the 26th man between games. As in, if they make a roster move between games, even if it is swapping other players or DLing someone, they lose the 26th spot for game 2.

I would go with a bullpen game as I think any of the spot starters named would be on a very short leash anyway. There has to be some benefit in being able to tell and prep a guy for “unless lightning strikes you’re gonna be out there in the fifth”.

Except most of the bullpen pitched yesterday and who knows what is going to happen in Game 1. Cuevas starts and I assume Cora will try to stay away from using Velazquez in game one which gives him a couple of guys who can give him multiple innings.
If the offense shows up then maybe those 2 can go the whole game.

Edit:Velazquez not Vazquez
Edit2: I missed what Cora said about wanting to start Velazquez, doesn't really change anything just swaps the guys.

Cora said after the game that he "hopes" it will be Velazquez, but if he has to pitch in the first game, "we'll see."
He said it with a smile. I've seen more of the pre and post game press scrums in the last 2 weeks than all season. He really is loose. I got that sense hearing the radio pre-games, but its really clear when I see him.

I think he would like to avoid starting cuevas, even if Velazquez is only good for 40 pitches.. Maybe fewer nerves that way.

Workman is the only reliever who pitched both of the last two games. Since he's probably going back to Pawtucket when Sale comes off the DL, maybe the Sox should send him down now and activate two pitchers for today only -- Cuevas as the 26th player, and Poyner/? to keep Sale's seat warm.

PawSox depth isn't great and they are currently in Indiana.

Poyner and Gorst both pitched two innings last night. Kelley and Walden two a piece on Thursday. Best bet would be Haley who is tonight's starter...

Tonight's game is the make-up of the rain out when the Sox were up 5-0.

quick question: I'm sure this has been answered 100X, but why doesn't MLB just resume the game from where it was stopped?
