Well my schedule just got a lot more free June 2018

T&T has 1.4 million people total! And they found among them 15 better soccer players than we could in 350 million. Cool

All the momentum that they had built up for interest in soccer is all set back now. I’m not watching this team for a long time after this. That was just so pathetic I have no interest

Jk is the reason we're in this spot.. his lack of development of a pool or any consistency is why he deserved to get fired and should have been fired earlier.
yes and no. He deserved to be fired sure. Problem is that Arena was just woefully incompetent, the modern game passed him by many years ago and he refused to adjust. We had the same abysmal tactical problems through the Hex. If there is one thing worse than throwing shit at the wall constantly and hoping something sticks it's taking something that you should know is terrible then being surprised when it doesn't work over and over again.

He's up for re-election next year so we'll see
Not qualifying should mean auto-ejection. There’s no better sign that we’ve barely progressed than the untalented roster, lackluster effort, and confused managing we saw throughout this entire cycle.

This was the part that was so hard to watch. Even up to the very end, they played with absolute no urgency.

WC will be great & honestly probably better off without this team.
It will be great, yes, but worse for having a team like Honduras who play the worst brand of football imaginable.

Seriously you blame him for the lack of talent in the pool? Not the terrible systems in place or the players not developing in the MLS.

Who were all the players that Bruce brought in once he was in charge? Nothing changed once he showed up and he got subpar results (obviously), but somehow that is JK's fault as well?

If JK was still the coach, they qualify.
Everyone overreacted because they lost a game they should lose away to CR and lost to Mexico on a 90th(ish) minute goal.

I can imagine one worse brand.

Agree. JK was an incompetent charlatan, but there's no reason to bury our heads in the sand and pin it all on him. The players didn't get the job done tonight and in some previous WCQs. Arena got the tactics wrong today. As good as the US has looked at home vs. PAN and HON, the team has also looked mentally out of it in several WCQs. That's partially on the players and partially on Arena.

There's just so much blame to go around, I'd try to assign percentages but I'd keep adding up to 175% or something.

Arena also chose to go with continuity through WCQ and keep a very static pool rather than experiment on new players during the stretch run. Clearly, that strategy was not effective.

Yup. It's an unmitigated disaster for US soccer.

Maybe some good will come out of it. We will have to see, but it's hard not to see this as a giant step backwards.

Pretty much. JK deserved a lot of criticism but firing him and replacing him with Arena was a stupid idea on numerous levels. I want Farrell gone too, but not if the replacement is going to be Jimy Williams.

Brooks and Cameron are injured. Gonzalez sucks and he's absolutely the goat today. The other options were Hedges and maybe Ream? Gonzalez was good the other day but expecting two good games in a row from him was probably asking too much, even against T&T.

This will be the first WC final without the US since 1986. Compared to the big boys of the tournament, that may not seem like much, but it’s surely something that put them near the top of the second tier.

The response can’t just be tweaks around the edges. A flamethrower needs to be taken through the USSF, MLS included. If not, there can be no progress beyond simply appearing in WC finals as cannon fodder.

That was his biggest failure. He won the Gold Cup with his B team, but brought back essentially the same 23 in the fall.

Cameron is not injured, AFAIK.

This is just really hard to take. I've been a fan of US Soccer since way before it was cool. I probably became a member on SOSH, because of my posting in Gazza as opposed to anywhere else.

I remember the Panama v. USA game in Seattle, and remember seeing the place full of USA fans and I thought back on qualifiers I'd been to where it was tough to fill two sections full of USA fans and it was deeply moving. I remember feeling so good that night, and thinking that soccer was finally arriving. The future just seemed so bright.

It just seems completely ripped apart in the last 10 minutes. I don't have any interest in assigning blame. Who fucking cares. I'm just fucking gutted. Absolutely gutted. When fireworks were going off in the stadium in Orlando last week, I remember distinctly feeling, "ok, it has been a rough ride, but the character of this gritty team finally showed itself." I can't believe that was just four days ago. Fucking hell. This. Fucking. Sucks.

We already have such a hard time developing real talent. If this means that X amount of kids fewer are watching this summer and maybe Y amount become a bit less interested and the ‘09/‘10/‘11 classes or whatever end up a bit smaller, well shit.

Gretzky inspired a whole generation of California hockey players. Our kids are missing out on seeing the best player we’ve ever had play in the biggest sporting event in the world. What a fucking travesty.

6 teams had longer streaks going into today:
Brazil - 20
Germany-16
Italy- 14
Argentina - 11
Spain -10
South Korea- 8

Hey, I found sf121's alt account. The players who knocked the US out, Romell Quioto and Roman Torres, guess what league they play in. I'll give you a hint; it's the same league as Alberth Elis, Johan Venagas, and soon Carlos Vela. Why isn't dragging the rest of Concacaf down?

I know bigger nations have missed more recently, but the United States plays in a two-nation confederation and somehow managed to finish fifth.
