US temporarily falls to fifth in the Hex as Honduras and Costa Rica played to a draw in San Pedro Sula. At this point in the Hex, I'm happy when two competitors manage to collectively drop four points.

I kind of view it more conservatively. With Mexico and Costa Rica having beaten the US already including one of the games here in the states, I could see the argument for hoping that Mexico and Costa Rica get maximum points against Honduras and Panama. Third and fourth place could well come down to how well the four teams not Mexico or Costa Rica play against those two.

In the end, though, it probably doesn't much matter. USA needs to take care of its business tonight. A win for either team would be massive and leave the other with very little margin for error.

T&T got absolutely screwed - scored a great goal that was wrongfully disallowed for offside. Mexico ends up winning 1-0, so if you assume Mexico is already in, a good result for the US.

Cameron starts on the BENCH?! From US Soccer's page:

Today’s U.S. MNT Starting XI vs. Panama: 1-Tim Howard, 2-Jorge Villafaña, 3-Omar Gonzalez, 4-Michael Bradley (capt.), 8-Clint Dempsey, 10-Christian Pulisic, 13-Jermaine Jones, 14-Tim Ream, 15-Darlington Nagbe, 17-Jozy Altidore, 19-Graham Zusi

Substitutes: 12-David Bingham, 22-Nick Rimando; 5-Matt Besler, 6-Dax McCarty, 7-DaMarcus Beasley, 9-Paul Arriola, 11-Alejandro Bedoya, 16-Sacha Kljestan, 18-Chris Wondolowski, 20-Geoff Cameron, 21-Walker Zimmerman, 23-Kellyn Acosta
edit: would assume that's:

Howard
Zusi - Gonzalez - Ream - Villafana
Pulisic - Jones - Bradley - Nagbe
Dempsey - Altidore

Cameron is reportedly injured. He did come off in the last game after limping a bit.

That's a hell of a defense in WCQ. So many injuries - we don't have a single first-choice player along the back line.

Okay, I read it's a strained quad for Cameron. The right back situation is so dire - Yedlin injured, Chandler not called, Cameron injured, Orozco injured, Lichaj injured.

I didn't know Heath Pearce works for BeIN now. We may need him to suit up.

Ugh, this is a beIN game, isn't it? Telemundo for me then.
Soccer fans complaining about a game on a network with exclusive rights to 3 of the 5 biggest leagues in Europe always puzzles me. Do you never watch Real, Barça, Juve, PSG, or Monaco outside Champions League?

Also, the game is on Go 90.

and Fabian Johnson, too, of course. A Bob-Bradley-in-Swansea-like shit sandwich for Arena in his first road WCQ.

Avg road points by Hex finishing position since its institution in 1998 (5 cycles, this is the 6th):

1st: 7, 12, 7, 7, 7 => 8.0
2nd: 6, 4, 7, 4, 3 => 4.8
3rd: 3, 5, 4, 4, 4 => 4.0
4th: 1, 8, 3, 4, 5 => 4.2
5th: 2, 3, 1, 0, 2 => 1.6
6th: 0, 3, 0, 1, 2 => 1.2

If we assume a loss in Mexico City, we only have 3 chances to get those 4-5 road points that could well be the difference between qualification, playoff and going home. One of them is in ten minutes.

On UnivisionHD for me (Xfinity), en Espanol, of course.
The Panamanian footballers are not very good singers.

Edit: In English on BeIn Sports (basic), but BeIn Sports HD is showing Brazil/Paraguay. Weird.

Felipe Baloy used to be one of the more imposing CBs in CONCACAF but he is ancient now. Their RB Adolfo Machado joined Houston this year where he has been playing CB. I wonder if he'll be a stay-at-home type today.

Good chance for Panama off a corner but the header was a little over the crossbar. Marking on the set piece not very good.

I hope Jones now "accidentally" steps on one of their guys. You can get physical but not with him

The Pulisic Hack-a-Thon is well underway. Welcome to the next 15 years of CONCACAF.

Nagbe is a close second to Pulisic in terms of taking a beating from Panama.

Hopefully that was the sole "Zusi at RB" moment of the match, but there's still a lot of time.

Pulisic outmuscling Felipe Baloy, love it.

This is the kind of association football game that must have led to the development of rugby and gridiron, in that some guy must have said fuck it, if I'm going to get hacked like this I'm gonna pick the goddamn thing up and run with it
