Ken Rosenthal was saying this morning on MLBN that he thought the Orioles had decided to give up the 17th pick and sign one of the pitchers, citing the improvement of their farm system

With a glut on the market, the price of quality starting pitchers has declined since 2013 -- Garza and Jimenez both got smaller annual values than I would have expected. The Red Sox should be extra grateful to have escaped paying Dempster $13 million to sit in the bullpen.

They may as well give up that pick for a decent free agent that is even willing to come to Baltimore (not many are), given their recent history with wasting their first round picks on total busts/guys with chronic injury issues....

He's never going to to turn into the star that many people hoped, but he had a pretty decent bounce back year last season, striking out more than a batter an inning. If he can do that again he's at least the second best starter on that team. If either Gausman or Yoon clicks than Duquette may have sneakily built a halfway decent rotation while they wait for Bundy to get healthy and get up there.

I'm shocked that NY didn't grab one of these two guys, especially at these prices.

The Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a four-year deal worth roughly $48 million with right-handed pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez, a source confirmed to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

Touche?
Pretty fair contract. Tough to give up a first round pick, but they didn't overpay for Jimenez and that pick is far from a sure thing.

After they got Tanaka? The back of their rotation is not one of their larger problems, CC/Kuroda/Tanaka/Nova and then Pineda/Phelps/Warren/Nuno for the 5th spot. I could see going for Garza over Tanaka, but as Keith Law just wrote, Ubaldo has basically had two good half seasons (admittedly two dominant half seasons) in his entire career. He was awful for 2+ years before figuring things out a month or two into last season, not sure I'd want to commit to four years with him. OK move for Baltimore, though.

Echoing what others have said, $12 million a year for Jimenez seems like a good deal.  For example, that's less than both Peavy and Dempster are (was in the case of Dempster) scheduled to make this year.

No, he wasn't.  2011 was not so great in ERA but his peripherals were basically the same as they had been the previous two years.  Just unlucky - he got killed on his strand rate.  He's really only had one bad year.

How about signing either Garza or Jimenez (I, too, would prefer Garza) at age 30 for less AAV than 36 year old Beltran, especially considering they already had Gardner, Ells, and Soriano (not to mention Ichiro) for the outfield?  Or how about Cano and Garza instead of Tanaka and Beltran?

Yeah; he had era + numbers of 112, 118, 126, and 161 in his first 4 seasons in Colorado (well, his 1st season was half a year) and a 114 last year in Cleveland.  He basically struggled for half of 2011 and most of 2012, but has been either damn good or dominant in his other 5 + seasons in the majors...

Well, that's a different question, I personally wouldn't have signed Beltran or McCann (and I definitely wouldn't have let Russell Martin go), but surprisingly no one asked me.

The same is really true of Santana; 3 good years, 3 mediocre years, and 3 bad years.  I can't believe he's still out there at these prices.  If you get him for about this same contract, you probably won't regret it.

Just a little over half of what Tanaka got in terms of AAV.

Exactly. Scott Feldman, who's the pitching equivalent of Seasonal Affective Disorder, just got 3/30. Jason Vargas just got 4/32. Getting Ubaldo for 4/48 or Santana for something similar is an incredible bargain given what SP are making in free agency right now.

Has this really been an issue? The Orioles are, for all intents and purposes, a large market team (having made out like bandits with the deal they got at the expense of the Nats) that hasn't shied away from spending and has a promising young core of players-- Machado, Davis, Bundy (assuming all goes well with rehab)--with a solid game-caller in Matt Wieters. With the possible exception of older free agents looking for a last gasp at a ring, I'd be surprised to see too many potential signings avoiding Camden Yards.
