    * Round 4: Ty Buttrey, RHP, Providence High (SC): Considered one of the top 40 players in the entire draft, Boston gladly scooped him up in the fourth after he slid due to signability concerns. A highly projectable 19-year-old, Buttrey's fastball already hits 96 miles per hour. He complements his heater with a very good knuckle curveball and a developing changeup. He had been committed to the University of Arkansas.

I am really excited about this kid. Obviously, he's a long way off, but he's probably my favorite pick of this year's crop. I'm looking forward to watching him develop.

I'm bumping this because I was wondering if anyone knew anything about his potential debut? SoxProspects has him on GCL roster, MiLB.com backs it up. Hopefully we get to see him soon because I am intrigued by anyone who can throw 96 at age 18.

Funny story about Buttrey being banned from HS graduation ceremonies because of the draft: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-prep-rally/ty-buttrey-red-sox-draft-pick-t-walk-165707585.html

Of course, 24 hours later, after the story got traction, the school principal wisely realized she was about to be embarrassed on national TV (as James Roper might say), and reversed her decision: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-prep-rally/ty-buttrey-red-sox-draft-pick-walk-graduation-180126408.html.

Buttrey debuted for the GCL affiliate on Aug 1, pitched one inning in relief striking out 2, walking none, hitting a batter and giving up no hits. I am not sure why but he has not appeared again in a game.

    • Pitching Change: Ty Buttrey replaces Andrew Bailey.
    • Yoel Araujo hit by pitch.

    • Armando Araiza called out on strikes.
    • Miguel Beltran called out on strikes

That seems like relatively good news.  It was a bit of a bummer that he didn't make a full season team, but placing in Lowell rather than the GCL suggests they feel he is advanced enough to go against the college draftees and GCL graduates who mostly populate the NYPL.  Perhaps his failure to make a full season team stemmed from a minor but persistent unreported injury or just a desire to limit his innings rather than being a sign that he wasn't ready for the jump.

Buttrey currently has 41.1 innings pitched over 9 games started (just over 5 IP per game) and is sitting pretty with a 2.61 ERA, 22 K and 15 BB.  The K rate is brought down by his early starts in which he struck out only 3 in his first 14.1 innings, but that walk rate is solid.  If he can get the strikeout up consistently, he'll be making some noise over the next year.

Ty Buttrey made his full-season debut last night with Greenville.  It can be summed up with 4 words:  "Welcome to the Jungle."

Good news, all his outs came by K.  Bad news, he only had 2 Ks.  He was lifted after 2 outs because of pitch count, I assume.  He was victimized by two errors by 2B Wendell Rijo on consecutive plays, so probably more a case of a very young pitcher getting rattled by everything going wrong in his first start.

As Manny used to say, "Mama said there'd be days like this."  Look forward to his next start.

    Augusta Bottom of the 1st
    • Jeremy Sy singles on a fly ball to center fielder Manuel Margot.
    • Ryder Jones singles on a line drive to right fielder Bo Greenwell. Jeremy Sy to 3rd.
    • Brandon Bednar walks. Ryder Jones to 2nd.
    • Tyler Horan reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Wendell Rijo. Jeremy Sy scores. Ryder Jones to 3rd. Brandon Bednar to 2nd.
    • Christian Arroyo reaches on a force attempt, missed catch error by second baseman Wendell Rijo, assist to third baseman Carlos Asuaje. Ryder Jones scores. Brandon Bednar scores. Tyler Horan to 3rd. Christian Arroyo to 2nd.
    • Eugene Escalante singles on a ground ball to left fielder Kendrick Perkins. Tyler Horan scores. Christian Arroyo to 3rd.
    • Ryan Tuntland strikes out swinging.
    • Ty Ross strikes out swinging.
    • Pitching Change: Jonathan Aro replaces Ty Buttrey.
    • Randy Ortiz called out on strikes

Buttrey's been dealing with finger blisters since spring training. After the above outing, he made just 3 more starts with Greenville before landing on the DL again. His second start of the season was also a debacle (2.2 IP, 8 ER on 6 H & 4 BB).

Well, today he started another rehab stint with the GCL Sox. It was small (2.0 IP) but effective (3 K). Despite the competition level, the lack of walks are a good sign, and hopefully he'll return to the Drive in a couple of weeks.

Buttrey is having a good season as a reliever in Pawtucket, and was named an MLB Pipeline Prospect of the Week on mlb.com:

He still walks a bit too many but he has great stuff and it plays out in the pen. We could see him in Boston later this year, tho probably as a September call up.
