Twitter Inc., making a strategic push into online programming, won a deal to show Thursday night National Football League games online, a person familiar with the matter said.

The social-media company was said to be bidding against a slate of heavyweights including Verizon Communications Inc., Yahoo! Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. Facebook Inc. dropped out of the bidding last week, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions who asked not to be named because the talks were private.
I had no idea Twitter was in the bidding. Would we be opening a TNF twitter account on a browser somewhere and watch the game? Will they open a custom site for this?

Wonder what this means for all of the Twitter accounts the NFL was killing due to posting game clips during games last year. Seems like it's ripe for having some issues on that end, and also seems to be the death rattle of Twitter, much like NFL streaming was for Yahoo. Twitter is beyond fucked, and I say this as someone who uses the platform and likes parts of it quite a bit. But it can't be successfully monetized, and this is pretty much an admission of that. Guess I better learn how to Snapchat.

Interesting because they can't stream games on phones due to the NFL's exclusive deal with Verizon for that device.

So we're looking at computers, tablets and connected TV devices (which they'll need to develop apps for).

Telling that the two digital companies to pay for steaming rights are Yahoo and Twitter. Desperation = NFL games.

My mistake, looks like Twitter can stream on phones. Not sure how they got around Verizon's grip on that platform.

I guess this is one of the rare things that could make me make a twitter account.

Which is pretty much their goal, I imagine, since their new user growth numbers have missed analyst estimates for the last few quarters.
