Okay so which asshat decided Adrian Beltre had a better season than Betts or Trout? I think Betts got snubbed and the writers felt Trout deserved more than 1 MVP on his resume and that the Angels were not going to get any better.

If I had to guess, I'd put my money on someone who covers the Rangers. But isn't this the sort of thing that the BBWAA is trying to get out of the voting process?

Sucks for Mookie, but I'm glad that they voted for who they actually thought was most valuable and ignored how good or bad the teammates were.

Roberto Clemente finished 13th in the vote his final year, as did Ted Williams. Bonds performed like a top-10 MVP vote-getter his final year, but the political climate was such that he didn't receive a single vote. The award weirdly wasn't given during Joe Jackson's prime. Stan Musial's last season was one of only 4 of his 21 seasons in which he didn't receive MVP votes.

Has anyone ever finished as high in this vote in his final year as Ortiz?

Sandy Koufax finished second in 1966.

I think 2nd is a fantastic result for Mookie. Trout deserves the MVP as he's deserved to win most other years - I don't get the 'you have to be the best player amongst only the best teams' theory of the award. If you think that way just hold off until the playoffs are over and give it to the WS MVP because everyone else obviously wasn't valuable enough (not that Zobrist should have won that one - the wife-beater was more valuable to the Cubs winning IMO)

Why I voted for David Ortiz over AL MVP award winner Mike Trout

Voting for a designated hitter was not something I did without serious thought, but after examining all the numbers, talking to players, coaches and managers around the league and crunching the numbers some more, I felt Ortiz was the most impactful player in the AL this season.

That he did it at the age of 40 was just a bonus. ...

Another player told me, "There isn't a bigger weapon in the league than Papi's bat. Trout may be the best player, but Ortiz is the most dangerous."

Also, if he could have gotten on base 57 more times that last month to have an OBP comparable to Trout, that would have helped.

Mookie made 84 more outs at the plate than Trout. That's a HUGE difference. Voting shouldn't have been close.

I love Papi but this is just the kind of BS language people use to justify voting for the guy they want.

Are people really upset that Mookie finished 2nd? Trout had 10.6 WAR to Mookie's 9.6. Trout led the league in runs, walks, runs created, OBP, and OPS+. Plus he's a fantastic defender at a slightly more crucial defensive position.

I mean, come on guys. Mookie had a great year, but Trout is on another level entirely. As noted above the outs made difference alone is enormous.

Not really. Take a look at their respective numbers with runners on base. When it came time to convert chances to runs, Ortiz put up an OPS of almost 1.200.

With RISP, which is probably a better look at your phrase "convert chances to runs",Trout and Ortiz had a near identical OPS (1.072 vs 1.090)

I'm not seeing anyone upset in this thread, but elsewhere, I've seen the old "Trout couldn't get his team to the playoffs, how valuable could he be?" chestnut getting trotted out.

While they're far from perfect, all the various versions of WAR and similar stats are taking all the subjectivity out of defining a player's value to his team. It's almost getting to the point where the voting for MVP is unnecessary, and at least for the Cafardo-types, they're seeing their own importance in things diminish and they're scared.
