I am admittedly ignorant on how the cap works, but I don't see any way Denver could take on Romo's cap hit.

Edit: 10 Million of cap space vs. 20.8 million cap hit.

Denver wouldn't take on the whole cap hit, only the salary ($8.5 MM). Dallas would still incur the cap hit from Romo's bonus money, of which $32 MM remains (which is why it can't happen).

Trading Romo (which I can't see happening) leaves the Cowboys with Mark Sanchez behind Prescott. Dallas has too much mojo this season to take that risk

I would love for the Joe Thomas trade rumors to heat up again, although recent reports have him reiterating his desire to stay in BelieveLand.

I posted this elsewhere, but Mark Dominik said on ESPN Radio the other day that he'd love to see the Vikings go all in and offer a pair of second-rounders for Thomas -- since the O-line is their weakness currently

Thomas has a $10m cap hit in his last 2 remaining years (2017 & 2018).
If Thomas was 28, maybe. He'll be 32 and 33 in those two years.

If past history is any indication, I'd bet on an underutilized & under-the-radar DE/LB that could be had for a 5th~6th rounder.

DE looks pretty full but LB is a possibility. TE and RB are the other spots they could look at, or maybe even WR. They joint practiced this year with Chicago and New Orleans, so maybe someone on those teams?
He only keeps the 5th rounder when he needs a special teamer.
2015: Joe Cardona
2010: Zoltan Mesko
2008: Matt Slater
The other 5th rounder that's stuck in recent memory is Marcus Cannon, who they could stash on NFI while he was fighting cancer.

I think the reality is that a 5th round pick really isn't worth any more to the Pats than a 6th or 7th - it's a priority UDFA who has maybe a 20% of sticking unless they have a specific ST role they need filled. To other teams, getting a fifth in a deal looks appealing because that player has a better chance to make that roster.

Yeah, I was mostly making a joke (I thought Gost was a 5th as well, but actually a 4th - would have made it work a little better). Koppen was a 5th rounder as well, but that's going back pretty far.
