A Scud Away from Hell
Well, here's that time again. Thursday night, your New England Patriots and SB Champs will open their 2017-2018 season against the Kansas City Chiefs.

To get things started, here's a primer on their current 53-man roster: http://www.espn.com/blog/kansas-city-chiefs/post/_/id/22151/chiefs-have-their-roster-but-is-it-good-enough

Some quick thoughts on the game:

Although Brady lost his favorite target in Edelman, Chief's starting CB Steven Nelson was also put on IR (signing C.J. Spiller in his place). Brady can stay away from Marcus Peterson and exploit the likes of Phillip Gaines and DJ White. Of course, this assumes that either 1) NE will be able to run the ball to keep them honest and 2) OL can keep Brady up long enough against the Chiefs (legit scary if Justin Houston returns to form) pass rush. Since Eric Berry roams the middle, I'm expecting more sideline routes to Hogan and Cooks rather than in-seam throws as well.

On the other side of the ball, I think the NE secondary tackles well enough to prevent the patented Alex Smith's dink-and-dunk clock-eating drives. Losing key offensive cogs like Maclin will hurt (in an offense that was decidedly middle-of-the-road in 2016). Not having to face Spender Ware (lost for the season) helps out here as well. This is a "good" (from NE's PoV) offense to face as it works its kinks out.

On special teams, I say they'd be pretty even except for the numerous injuries that Ebner, Slater, and others are still recovering from. BB's focus on the special team talents (Bademosi, for example) makes a lot of sense right now.

Even if things are unexpectedly close, you know you can count on a Reid screw-up or two, either with end-of-half time-management or a mystifying challenge flag.

As you know I don't make score predictions but feeling pretty good about the opening game.

LET'S GOOOOOOO!!!

P.S. Just a quick note -- as was in the years past, would like to get the pre-game news, updates, analytics, and (of course) hot takes here INSTEAD of the Game Thread.

We're going to need to call in the Hot Take Police for this one. NFL Analyst gives Andy Reid the advantage vs BB as a head coach due to his great record 26-10 in Week 1 and after a bye. That's a 72.2% winning percentage. Since getting to NE, BB's winning percentage is 73.9%.

BB is also 26-10 in the playoffs, a bit tougher time of year than Week 1 and After a Bye.

By my count the Patriots are 14-3 in the playoffs after a bye (eleven times they had a first round bye - losing once in the next round - and they have had six SB appearances that had an off week, going 4-2).

Weather could be a factor as a slow moving cold front is going to be sending plumes of rain through southern New England Tuesday to potentially Friday. Latest National Weather Service forecast is calling for rain to taper off Thursday night but the forecast could change depending on how quickly the front pushes off.

I'm looking to see what new schemes Josh has up his sleeve. I think they have the most-multi-dimensional offense that they have ever had, not only in terms of different personnel groupings, but also within a group.

Some options, that even my limited little brain can foresee:
  • The Power Option: Gronk, Allen, Gillislee, Develin, with Fleming in as a 3rd TE.
  • The Speed Kills Option: Cooks, Dorsett, Lewis, Hogan, Mitchell
  • The Swiss-Army Knife: Gronk, Allen, White, Burkhead, Hollister (pack them in tight, with two in the backfield, then motion out to a 5 wide set up)
I think Burkhead may be the best jack-of-all-trades RB they have had in a long time. Gillislee hasn't caught many balls in his pro career; is that due to stone hands or lack of coaching imagination? His career stats are 15 caught out of 18 targets, which might suggest (SSS) the latter. For too long, the personnel at RB seemed to make too obvious the Pats' intentions for play-calling. It would be nice to mix that up this year with this stable of RBs.

Chiefs were 12-0 when they scored 19+ points last year, 0-5 when they didn't. Probably safest to shut them out.

It will be interesting to see if they can run the ball effectively with Kareem Hunt as the starter. I would think in the passing game they will put Gilmore on Tyreek Hill, Butler on Conley, and bracket Travis Kelce. Offensively, I expect to see McD experiment with different formations and personnel to see what works. We know they use the first few games as an extended preseason. I honestly don't know what we'll see from them because they have so many options to work with.

Has every SB winner of recent vintage had this? I assume it's done by the league, not the team.
I think any patches have to be requested by the team and approved by the NFL ... so, a little of both. But, honestly, it's tacky to wear a patch like that all through the season -- especially when you have a coah whose philosophy is to put last season away and concentrate only on moving forward

Good points. I figured this was driven from the league and the Pats would have no say.

Changing subject, here's my early guess on the inactives:
  1. V Valentine
  2. C Fleming
  3. M Flowers
  4. M Slater
  5. C Marsh
  6. J Hollister
  7. M Mitchell
All but Flowers, Marsh and Hollister are reportedly a bit dinged so I'm guessing they will sit.

Wouldn't past experience tell us they might put Malcom on the smaller, quicker guy (Tyreek) with help and single up Gilmore on Conley - or even Kelce?

I would think Flowers will play. He was brought in to help on S/T's with, I'd think, an eye toward this game in particular, given Kansas City's talent on return teams.

Not sure how much Dorsett could contribute unless he's going to return punts. But I guess with Mitchell banged up they might have to dress him.

They've dressed three WR before. Just run a lot of two TE sets or use the RBs as quasi WRs and always have Slater in an emergency (if he's ready to go)

My worry is that Mitchell's recurring knee injury -- dating back to his college days -- is not going away this year or next. The much-touted depth on the WR may not be as solid as it once looked.
I think that's a legitimate concern. Mitchell and Hogan are our own 2 WRs with any kind of size. If Mitchell goes down, that basically leaves Hogan and the smurfs. Hopefully, we at least get some pockets of effectiveness in between the injury setbacks.

Does NBC make these Thursday night games available to stream?
I believe so. You should be able to get it on a computer or connected TV device using the NBC Sports app/site. Verizon owns the mobile streaming rights so you'd need to be a customer of theirs to get it in your phone.

Not sure how this guy does his research. The Pats wore a patch two years ago during their first game as champs. Here is an enlarged pic of my avatar.
Ummm... until you find one that isn't the Pats or Saints... his sentence is still technically correct. Which everyone knows is the best kind of correct.

TNF should also be available on Amazon Prime Video if you're a Prime subscriber. That's available on mobile, tablet, computer and Amazon Fire devices.

Such a strange thing - I checked superbowl 50, and the Broncos didn't wear them in week 1 against the Panthers, but did wear them for atleast a bunch of other games that season.

I wonder if it has anything to do with week 1 Superbowl rematches, and not rubbing it in.
