Hmm. Could have happened anyway -- bit of a roster crunch as folks get healthy (hopefully).

But it does make me wonder whether he was told not to field that punt.
Agreed. I tend to think the cut indicates he was told to fair catch or let it go and freelanced...though it is certainly also conceivable otherwise, too.

It may also signal another WR will be on the roster soon. Someone like Boyce.

It also may be good news on the Amendola front.

Orrrrrr....they're just moving him back to the practice squad because they expect Amendola back next week and want to the roster spot for something else.

I hope this indeed means that Danny Amendola is going to be active next week. That seems logical but who the hell knows.

This has an almost Steinbrenner-esque feel to it.

We'll always have that nice catch against the Bills that was called back due to a penalty

Do your job.

Jimmy Johnson cut a fullback who fumbled a game away for Dallas in the early Nineties right before the playoffs. Sent a shock wave through the whole team. They went on to win the Championship. Johnson was a tough SOB. This is the way it should be. Do your job.

I don't think there will be much of a shock wave in the locker room from essentially demoting an undrafted free agent that played in two games, but yeah, sure, go with BB did it as a message.

And who will very likely be re-signed to the practice squad as soon as he clears waivers. Even with Amendola presumably ready to return, and Edelman waiting in the wings, this WR corps isn't exactly chock (edit: nope, autocorrect, not "check") full of passable replacements. (And despite the awful punt return faux pas, I think Harper is passable as a wide out, especially given the injuries at that spot.)

Well if you don't think so then apparently it is settled. It is always good to reinforce the need to pay attention to details.

I don't think he was told not to field it, It wasn't like it was at the 5 yard line. I think he was just told not to drop it.

I like it when the "Bill Belichick doesn't get emotional and makes rational decisions on what is in the best interests of the football team" saw gets thrown in the water when it's fun to imagine him, instead, as some malevolent puppet-master who cuts guys that he previously deemed worthy of starting in an important game for making a single error that pisses off the fans.

I think it's unlikely he was told to not field the punt under any circumstances, but considering they didn't put anyone back to field the next punt he was probably told not to take any chances. Field position was not the concern there.

I hope this story gets unpacked, though I'm doubtful it will.

Not sure how you blame this on the coaches. If you don't have the situational awareness to call a fair catch in those conditions, with that coverage, at that point of the game you aren't long for this team. This is 100% on Harper.

They are signing a return guy, so looks like that mistake did cost Harper that role for the time being.

Ummm, yeah. Can work through lots of things, but not stupidity.

Sure you can, rookies do dumb things all the time.
Funny this comes up now since Jimmy Johnson's A Football Life was on last night. There was a scene with BB and JJ on his fishing boat, and JJ is describing his rules for acquiring players, and said #1 is to avoid stupid players. BB responded with "you taught me that well."

There's a difference between a stupid player and a player doing something stupid though.

We will find out which bucket this falls into when we see whether Harper goes to the PS

I agree with you barring another rash of injuries. I disagree that he can't work through a stupid play and have a career.

He is not going to get the chance in that role the rest of this season. I will put $1000 to the JF on it.
In fact, with the signing of WR/KR Damaris Johnson the Patriots career of Chris Harper (cleared waivers) seems to have ended in a poor fashion.
