The game is on NFL network right now. That PI call on Butler on 3rd and 4 when it was 21-3 was a soft soft soft call. Didn't matter, obviously, but that (and the PI call on the TD pass to the TE that was a TD anyway, although the TE was doing as much handsy stuff) were the only calls that really hurt. And the XP call was a slip.

So while the refs did a great job, their three weak calls led directly to 4, 3-6, and 1 extra point(s).
How did a PI call on a play that went for a TD lead to points against the Patriots or is there another call in there?

Was fine with the Butler call, looked to me like he used his off arm for leverage to go through the receiver. Would have liked to see the angle from the end zone that the official that threw the flag was looking at, I dont think the network ever showed it.

I am saying, they could have called PI on both players, so no TD and maybe they get held to a FG or maybe there is a turnover. Hence the 3-6 points.

Caller to Mike F. saying that the Patriots have an unfair advantage because Brady makes less money and veterans are willing to take less. So that counteracts the "it's harder in free agency to build a dynasty" argument.

There are no words.

Meh, OPI seems like it would have been a pretty weak call there. The case for calling offsetting facemasks on Ryan and whoever the Falcons WR was on the 3rd and 23 holding call and offsetting the whole play seems stronger than for calling Hooper for OPI IMO.

These things are always confusing for me; if there are offsetting facemasks and a holding penalty on the LT, do they go with the hold or do they replay the down?

Is it just a hot take to generate buzz or just simple hatred to find a way to call Tom Brady the luckiest QB of all time?

Who is Rob Parker and what is the source of his palpable butthurt?

I don't have any Blank hate in me. Flying in everyone in the organization for the event seemed like an incredibly classy move.
This right here. Atlanta has just experienced an epic soul crushing collapse of mythic proportions. So soul crushing that it probably can only be appreciated by pre 2004 Red Sox fans. I have zero delight in seeing them beat down.

That being said, let's be real. Better them than us.

Isn't Rob Parker the guy who asked Rod Marinelli (during the 0-16 Lions season) if he wished his daughter had married a better defensive coordinator? Marinelli's son-in-law was the DC that year. That's a genuinely offensive question.

Haven't watched around the horn in years.
Bomani Jones said this wasn't the best Patriots super bowl entertainment wise because it wasn't even the closest, it was the widest margin! Also not impressed at Brady's comeback because it's his fault they were losing. What the fuck is wrong with you? How do these people get paid to do this?

Also, fuck the Montana 4-0 in SB argument and Brady only 5-2. Why is missing the playoffs/SB better than losing the SB?

'tears of unfathomable sadness' taste so good

4-0 is only better than 3-4, 2-5, 1-6, and 0-7.

I've had a couple of my Giants-fan friends tell me the game wasn't "great". But I know that's because they, along with much of the fan bases of the other 30 NFL teams, were rooting like hell for the Falcons. So watching them implode was more "root canal" than "entertaining". Oh well.

If you were rooting against the Pats,(or for the Falcons) that was a horrific game. If you're a casual fan who didn't care, that game was stupendous. And if you're a Pats fan, it was better than stupendous.

Sure. From my purely anecdotal evidence every person I know who is a somewhat avid fan of another NFL team was rooting against the Pats. Lots of Facebook posts taking delight in the Pats misfortune for the first 3 quarters of the game. Afterwards I saw a lot of folks expressing horror at the outcome.

Have a former coworker who moved to Atlanta recently, and is suddenly a big-time Falcons fan. He was posting shit on Facebook after every successful Atlanta play for 3+ quarters. Then suddenly he went radio silent. I posted one silly picture about how the Pats had the lead for zero seconds and still won, and he immediately responded telling me he was going to have to block my feed. I actually giggled aloud.

I also find the Montana argument now rings hollow, so he has moved to second on my list. The Super Bowl was so often played in the NFC playoffs during the 80s, and not getting to the big game needs to count towards Montana's evaluation just as his record once getting there does. Also, at some point if memory serves wasn't there was run of Super Bowls that was decided in the offseason by whether Dallas or 49ers signed Deon and Charles Haley?

As a separate thought experiment, there is the 'which QB would I want to lead my 'meh' team into the playoffs' question. I end up with either peak Elway or Favre. Which makes me sad a little, but I'm not sure why.

Not sure where to put this, but I was amused and thought you might be. From the WSJ:

New England Can’t Lose, And It Makes Haters Crazy
It looked like a glorious night of Schadenfreude for Patriots loathers; then it all changed.

It’s sad but true: there are two-year-olds in New England who have only seen their local teams win two world championships.

If you despise Boston and its noisy sports nation, these are dark, hideous hours. The city continues to collect major sports titles like they’re parking tickets on an abandoned Volvo on Commonwealth Avenue.

The article continues along this vein.

Lol. Yes, they were close to scoring, and yes, if they did score a touchdown they would win the super bowl

Brady, Manning and Elway are the three acceptable answers to your thought experiment, in my opinion.

Haley's trade to Dallas came at towards the end of the 1992 training camp, in between Montana's missed 1991 season and the 1992 season where he only played the second half of the last game. But you're right about the NFC Championship being the real Super Bowl for a stretch in the early/mid 1990s. Sports Illustrated even called the 1995 NFC championship game The Real Super Bowl on its cover.

FWIW, while it was the tail end of the NFC run of dominance in the Super Bowl, the series of seasons "decided in the off-season" was the post-Montana, Steve Young-has-a-monkey-on-his-back era in Niners history.

Normally this is the case, but Jones has been anti-Boston the last month and IIRC he might be from Atlanta. This hit him really hard.

There were few legit superbowls during that late 80s to mid 90s stretch. Prob SF/CIN and then BUF/NYG. BUF was probably the only AFC team favored during that entire stretch. They really should have won SB XXV.

Rob Parker has been on the "4-0 in Super Bowls is better than 5-2" rant for weeks. Over the weekend, he said that "if you ask any player in the nFL if they'd rather be 4-0 or 5-2 in Super Bowls, they'd all say 4-0"

I'd wager not a single NFL player would rather be 4-0. I can't even begin to comprehend the thought process of someone who truly believes that.

Is it better to be 4-3 in conference championship games or 7-3? Is it better to lose consecutive divisional round playoff games to the Giants by a combined score of 66-6 and get benched for sucking in one or lose two Super Bowls to the Giants each by a hair? Asking for a friend.

Edit: Oh and I've been bugged by the crap that the Patriots get a free ride in the playoffs due to the AFC East. First of all it was a Seahawk who started that talk and as far as I remember the second best team in the AFC East was a lot better than the second best team in their shithole division. Secondly, if we are going to talk about free rides to the finals that conversation starts with Magic Johnson and ends with LeBron James and nobody outside of Boston wants to go there.

Why anyone listens to the hot-takez crowd is beyond me. I suspect the vast majority don't even believe the words they speak and are simply trying to keep their audiences engaged via outrageous comments.

Its also obvious that there are going to be many people who will come up with arguments as to why Brady or even Belichick aren't the greatest of all time even after this game. Given that its a purely subjective topic, its essentially impossible to prove them otherwise.

Even if you point out all the wins, the sustained dominance of the AFC East and the relatively modest talent that they have had to work with (compare the Patriots SB winning rosters to some of those 49ers or Cowboys rosters from back when they were winning), they will spit back something about cheating. I am well past the point of even discussing this with non-Patriot fans because many of them simply can't or won't recognize how special this franchise has been over the past 16 years.

If you think about it, the Patriots' win was indeed just plain luck. Why 15 minute quarters, as opposed to, say, 14 minute quarters? It's just an arbitrary number. If the game had ended after 56 minutes, they would have lost. Q.E.D.
