[Bettman] eventually approached me and asked, “So, what did you think?”
I respond: “Well, the number six was the only number to pop up three times and the Devils won. Coincidence?”
Bettman chuckles and raises his eyebrows. “The number of the devil.”
More evidence that Bettman rigs the lottery since Bettman is, in fact, the devil.

The Devils do have our 2nd round pick this year from the Stempniak trade....

I have no idea what Spooner's value is. From 14-16 he was 42nd in the league with 2.03 points per 60, among names like Filip Forsberg and Anze Kopitar. That's good production. This year was quite a debacle. His possession has always been lousy and we all know about his defensive work. Who knows if he can survive at C long term. He's arb eligible this year, and will get a raise. Additionally, he would only be controllable for 2 more seasons.

I'm sure there's a team out there that'll see him as a worthwhile gamble, but I'm not sure what sort of return to expect. I'm not thinking much.

Based on his career numbers, Spooner would become the second-best center on the Devils, behind Zajac. New Jersey needs centers. Henrique has the worst possession numbers on the team.

Can Vegas trade for an NHL roster player? I used the Google Machine, but all I could come up with is an SB Nation post that says Vegas can only trade for prospects and draft choices. Can't find anything to confirm that.

If they can get their second back from New Jersey, they should take it and run. With regards to Vegas, I think they can trade for NHL players. I'd give them Spooner if they also took Beleskey, Hayes or McQuaid off our hands.

Vegas has signed free agent center Vadim Shipachyov from the KHL. 2/$4.5mm AAV. Nice get for Vegas. 30 year old playmaking C. 26-50=76 in the KHL last season.

Looks like the Kovalchuk return is a go. Seems Devils don't want him, so it'll be a sign and trade.

Kovalchuk - Krejci - Pastrnak

Get it done, Donnie!

Is Kovalchuk still bound by the second contract he signed with NJ (contract details here)?
If so, the B's will pay him 11.8, 10, 7, 4, 1, 1, 1, 3, and 4 million dollars over the next 9 seasons (4.5M average) while he carries a 6.67M cap hit and the B's also might be subject to early retirement penalties if he goes back to Russia again/actually retires.

Gigantic pass. Let Vegas have him. They have the $ to spend. The B's do not. I'd rather they spend their money on Pasta.

Why do people still complain about ESPN not covering hockey? It's basically nostalgic cravings/complaints that have been going on for 10 years at this point and won't change barring ESPN getting hockey coverage back.

Mostly because they fired everyone not named "Barry Melrose" that covered hockey about a week ago. LeBruin, Burnside, and Joe McDonald were all let go, and Buccigross is also probably on the way out when his contract is up in July. They could at least make intelligent commentary on what was going on whenever something important happened. Now its just Barry Melrose and his "aw shucks" down-home buffoonery.

But why do we care if ESPN covers hockey? I never went to ESPN for hockey content, and that's not changing now. I could give a shit if ESPN covers hockey at this point.

In all seriousness, I go here, Twitter, NHL Network, and NBCSports Network, in that order.

I use Puck Daddy and here. If it were 5 years ago and I had more time on my hands, probably more. But at this point in my life with work and other responsibilities, I have a hard enough time keeping up with the Bruins, let alone the rest of the NHL. Plus my work sucks and blocks a lot of websites.

I use twitter for news, then Sportsnet and TSN for content. I venture to Puck Daddy from time to time, but not all that frequently. I listen to Spittin' Chiclets as well, and sometimes the Hockeypdocast. That about does it. Spittin Chiclets is probably the best content out there.

Vigorously masturbating counts as a responsibility now? Do you work for a sperm bank?

Stars acquire Ben Bishop for montreal's 4th rounder (which I presume they own).

This feels like a steal for a team that desperately needed competent goaltending.

Edit: is it just his rights? Not quite as good, but isn't that still a good bargain?

It's just so ironic that the hit that forced Sarvard to retire was by Matt Hunwick the ex Bruin. Everybody wants to give Hunwick a pass when it was HIS hit that ended Sarvard's career. I agree that Cooke should rot in hell for his next 5 lifetimes but if Hunwick does not hit Sarvard he might have continued playing. Did the Bruins ever seek revenge against Hunwick? He seems to have gotten off easy.

I think most people realized it was a hockey play gone wrong. Hunwick was finishing his check and didn't do anything malicious. Savard had eased up just enough and was leaning forward slightly. If he maintained his momentum through the corner, Hunwick finishes his check shoulder to shoulder. Either way, without the damage done by Cooke, he probably would have returned to the ice.

Yeah the Humwick hit is a hit that happens 20 times in a game as people are battling in a corner. Just because a hit ends poorly does not mean it's cheap or anything. Shit happens sometimes and people get hurt. Sucks but so does watching no check men's league hockey.

NHL will release the expansion protect lists in 6/18 at 10am. Why make some extra money and do a prime time show on your own network or NBCSN, when you can just bury a release at 10 am on a Sunday?

Edit: 2.5 weeks away. Seems like this crept up. McPhee said he hoped to start announcing deals next week. Should be a fun offseason.

Vegas action heating up:

Also, LeBrun says they have an offer of a 1st round pick from a team to take a bad contract.
