The Great Coaster Debate

A friend of mine just bought himself a set of four slate etched coasters that have the play design of the four best Bronco plays in their history. They looked cool so I checked out what the Pats looked like. To my glee, the Pats actually had two sets.

Makes sense, right? Well, then I looked closely at the plays selected and found myself underwhelmed.

Set 1:

Edelman Super Bowl catch versus ATL
AV game winner for first Super Bowl
Butler interception
Randy Moss for 16-0

Set 2:

Some play from the “We’re on to Cincinnati” game
Butler interception again
Edelman to Amendola
Brady to Solder

Here are my issues in no particular order.

Some of these just seem like poor picks. I have little memory of the Cincy game and can’t remember anything interesting beyond the beat down.

The Solder play was cool but that game was a laugher.

The Butler interception was otherworldly but not really a “play” so much as a reaction, but I could certainly live with it.

AV’s kick is solid but it’s not a terribly interesting coaster.

The Edelman catch was a broken play, really.

Brady to Moss was a super sweet play, although I’ve tended to let 2007 fade from memory a bit. The Edelman To Dola was also a phenomenal play design, and that’s where the idea of these coasters can really shine.

So, SoSH, here are my questions. Answer as many as you’d like.

1. What are the four (or five) definitive plays in Pats history?

2. What four plays would you want to have on your coasters?

3. None Pats fans: Do you agree with the plays this company has chosen for your team? For example, the Broncos have Elway’s helicopter play. Definitely iconic but it seems to me more of a busted play/scramble.

4. So people even still use coasters these days?

The Butler INT is obviously huge, but probably doesn’t have to be on there twice.

And since someone else will say it anyways, Mo Lewis sacking Bledsoe is pretty important...

2004 ALCS Game 4 - Roberts SB
2004 ALCS Game 4 - Papi HR

I'd swap out 1986 and add in the 2013 Ortiz HR vs Detroit in the ALCS. I want to add more from the '04 ALCS, but honesty not sure. Would Foulke K's Tony Clark work? Umps reverse Bellhorn double? Umps rule Slappy out? Damon's 2nd HR in Game 7? So many options...

3. Daryl Stingley (40 years ago last Sunday)-Stingley's grandson is one of the top recruits in the class of 2019, committed to LSU. I hope he has the great career his grandfather was denied.

Post 1993

1. Vinatieri's kick to beat the Raiders-the last play ever run in Schaefer/Sullivan/Foxboro stadium
2. Vinatieri's kick to beat the Rams in the SB
3 Butler's pick
4. Hightower's strip sack of Matt Ryan

Rodney Harrison picking off McNabb to win 3 out of 4
James White to end the Falcons SB
"Direct Snap to Faulk!" - probably not going to make it but I love it
Hightower's stop directly before Malcom Butler's play. Hightower was a beast on that play and it's completely overshadowed.

Can we just get a coaster of I resign as the HC of the NYJ? barstool may have one already though.

These are great. I'm picking up one set for my brother for Christmas as he's horrible to shop for.

AV’s kick is solid but it’s not a terribly interesting coaster.

I did a diagram of Vinatieri's snowbowl kick once:

The Brady-to-Troy-Brown connection on the final drive was pretty sweet.

The Edelman catch was a broken play, really.

The other options that come to mind are White's final run (the first walkoff play in SB history?) or the Amendola 2-pt WR screen to tie it. Or the Hightower strip sack.

That was not only 16-0, it also was the record breaking TD pass for Brady (though Manning broke it a few years later) and TD reception for Moss (which still stands). I hope some day we are able to put the memories of that Super Bowl past us and treasure what that team did accomplish.

Some other plays I thought of:
- the Brady-to-Edelman whip route that was the go-ahead TD against Seattle
- it's too bad they didn't win the Super Bowl last year (duh) because the Brady-to-Amendola TD and the Gilmore PD against Jacksonville were both pretty sweet
- the Colts fake punt play, just for LOLz
- Wasn't there some signature pulling block for Hannah in the '85 playoff run? I was a little young then and I can't find it online but I remember seeing clips

2004 4th-down stop of the Colts by Bruschi / McGinest, on the 1 yard line? I think that play was better than the Butler interception, though of course not as meaningful.

Ty Law super bowl interception of Warner was a great play design.

Really, though, just go back and watch each Belichick Breakdown from the past decade and pick out some favorites from there. Some of those kick returns where all 10 blockers each do about 4 different things right are just jaw-dropping. The plays that set up Jacksonville to get beat late in the 4th, with the sequences of plays designed to draw in extra defenders then fake them out with double moves and such, were beautiful.

I'm having a hard time conceiving of this as "best plays" vs "most impactful plays". It seems everyone is conflicted on that. Vinatieri's snowbowl kick (or SB-winning kicks) was an incredible single play, but the play design was nothing special.

One that sticks out to me is 2007 vs. The Steelers: (lateral) screen to Moss, who dropped it, recovered, then lateraled it back to Brady, who then tossed it 40 yards or so to Gaffney into the endzone. It's hard to argue for it over that record breaking throw to Moss vs. the Giants, though. If they had won that SB I'd have 4 from this season alone.

I will say that while it sounds lame, I really enjoyed the first two offensive plays from that on to Cincinnati game. I remember being really pumped up watching Brady throwing two absolute rockets for the first few plays in a drive where they totally dominated the Bengals after a week of gleeful eulogies.

I'll second the Edelman whip route from the Seahawks Super Bowl.

Edelman to Amendola vs. the Ravens was great, but I also really like the ineligible reciever plays from that game. I think they both went to Ho'omanawanui. Everything about those plays is quintessentially Patriots: unorthodox, technically within the rules, everyone else was absolutely furious about it, etc..

A couple of my random favorites from this incredible run:
2003: Brady to Troy Brown in OT in Miami. Finally won in Miami after getting blown out there the last few years.
2003: Bruschi INT-TD vs. Miami in the snow. 12-0 final. Fans threw snow after. Goosebumps.
2004: AV TD pass to Troy Brown on the fake FG against the Rams. This was the week after the streak ended in Pittsburgh. The Pats were down corners, then IIRC one of their starting corners (Samuel or Gay) got injured on the first drive. Everyone was burying the Pats that week, and the Rams were still good. The Pats went into St. Louis and kicked ass.
