Worst Pats loss I can recall in terms of how unlikely the other team winning was at the very end of the game.

Gostkowski missing several kicks was the difference, hard not to have him as the GOAT.

Ghost.

But even with those misses, you just have to stop them from going 70 yards on one play, and fucking Gronk is in the game? I have no clue what they were thinking on that one.

Jonathan Jones. Had the intital lateral guy at his heels. Should've been able to wrap up there or at least disrupt the lateral so it didn't continue past that point. That part was the goddamn worst.

Ghost without question. This isn’t an issue if he makes 2 easy kicks.

Why do Miami road games always have to turn into disasters chock full of unforced errors??

They are right up there with the 2015 Pats as squander specialists, and right up there with the 2009 squad on the likability scale.

This game was seriously fucked up and predictably so.

Brady with the dumb sack at the end of the half turned out to be another huge kick in the nuts.

Why was docking Gronk in the game at the end?!??

True.

Having Gronk out there made no fucking sense, incidentally. Tannehill is not throwing it into the EZ from 70 yards out, and an end zone play is the only scenario where Gronk playing deep makes sense.

Any other DB pushes out the ball carrier there

Brady threw for 358 yards, 3 td, 0 int, but he had two terrible plays at the end of the first half.
Gronk had a monster game but stumbled at the very end on that last play.
Ghost was pretty bad but made what should have been the icing kick at the end.
The coaching made the right decision for the FG at the end but then...inexplicable on that last play.

I don't know who the goat for today is. Just stunned at the loss. Cannot believe that happened.

Whoever decided to put Gronk out there instead of someone like Gordon

The defense for allowing Tannehill to end with a near maximum QB rating on a gimpy leg for a lot of the game. All D coaches as well.
Seriously. People are crapping on Brady for one lousy play when the other side of the ball was a sieve all day. Embarrassing defensive performance.

This. Pretty much all of the defense, really.

And Ghost. If Ghost makes his kicks, it's a 9 pt lead at the end and that play is academic.

And the Chiefs just won, so you can kiss the #1 seed goodbye.

completely pissed away a reasonable chance at the 1 seed and complete control of the 2 seed.

My goats are the inner DL and LBs of the D specifically. Miami was able to run up the middle all day. The final play, the Brady-no-FG, the missed kicks by Ghost, etc distract from the fact that we were pushed around all day up the middle.

Now watch the Patriots go into Pittsburgh and crush the Steelers.

Just because that's how they go...

At this point you have to be happy with a #2 seed. Blew a chance to be in the driver's seat with the Texans losing.

Sickest I feel after a regular season loss since... the 4th & 2 Colts game?

I blame Gronk 0%. It was insane to put him out there instead of a defender.

Ghost and Belichick today.

And they probably bounce back and boatrace Pittsburgh next week.

Brady says he thought he had another TO at the end of the first half. Sounds bullshit to me.
What? Why would he lie?

I mean, is ‘I lost track of what the fuck was going on’ really better than ‘in the moment I should’ve had a better internal clock on throwing it away’?

No way they thought Tanny was going to go 70+ yards in the air. Was a bad decision having Gronk out there. Not that it ever should have gotten to the point of him needing to make a game saving tackle...
Just getting the ballcarrier toward the sideline means he gets tackled cutting back. He looked like he thought he could take him one by one and got his ankles broken.

So, it was the former Patriot Ted Larsen with the monster block on one of the laterals.

3 of 4 losses from Vrabel, Patricia, Bolden, and Larsen.

Very possible none of the 4 teams who beat NE get to the playoffs.

A strange season.

Gostkowski is a goat of course, but I wouldn’t even say he’s THE goat. Even if Gostkowski makes the PAT, the Pats lose. Missing the FG was a difference, of course, but no more than Brady giving away points at the end of the first half.

Brady is at least Gost’s equal in culpability just for that one dumb play, in an otherwise good game. I guess we don’t get to make fun of Matt Ryan anymore for taking the sack in SBLI.

The OL’s failure to open up a single running hole all game didn’t help either.

Here
Belichick.

Ghost missed two kicks, it happens. The defense gave up 35 points and had a 99.9% chance to win at the end. And Gronk on the field - amateur move. The overall effort, UGH. I counted three guys at least (Jones, Van Noy, and Chung) who just gave up on that last play. Maybe Chung was stunned, he he looked to have time to get back into the play.

This team is consistently making dumb plays on the road and we are in December. If Belichick isn’t getting through, it’s a steep uphill climb. Plus, defense is supposed to be his thing.

Supposing that the Patriots only have enough practice time to have one personnel package out there for various desperation endgame scenarios, it's gotta be Gordon out there instead of gimpy Gronk (as was the case against the Bears earlier this season).

Also, I'm not sure where he was initially lined up, but Duron Harmon took an awfully long time to catch up to a play where you'd normally think he'd be on top of it.

My first reaction after that play was, did Tom thin they had a TO left? So not implausible to me.
Yeah, I thought you could almost see him processing that fact mentally right after the sack, like he was just about to call timeout while sitting on his ass and realized that he fucked up.

Final play obviously was a huge screw up by the coaching.
They had the hail mary team out there for no reason, in addition to Gronk they rushed 4 which makes sense on a HM where you don't want the QB to be too comfortable but not on a H&L where the QB is getting rid of it quickly.

Oh well Houston lost so it isn't as bad as it could have been.

Re. Gronk, did they maybe get him out there because they expected a quick pass to get closer followed by the Hail Mary? Would there be any issues with getting him on to the field in time?

I’m not losing my mind over this loss. Of course it’s terrible. But if anything, it makes me appreciate how unbelievably disciplined this team has been for 18 years in games like this. And, the Pats won multiple games last year they had no business winning or probably should have lost – the Sefrarian Jenkins game, the TB game.

I choose to look at this less as some devastating loss and more as one they can take nothing positive away from going forward.

From the NFL Twitter account:

The @MiamiDolphins game-winning 69-yard touchdown on the final play against New England is the longest play from scrimmage to win a game with no time remaining in the fourth quarter since the 1970 merger.

Nice complement to the Celtics’ largest margin of victory on the road in NBA history last night.

There were timeouts available, so no.

It's possible that the Patriots coaches think that a Hail Mary to the 10 yard line + YAC / a deflection / whatever is a danger, but I can't remember this happening off the top of my head.

I am calling it right now. The Patriots win by 10+ next week in Pittsburgh. Yeah they might give up 30, but they're gonna win big. This loss - it will either crush NE or totally galvanize them. I predict the latter.

It might not matter if they have to go to Arrowhead for the AFCCG, but for next week, I predict Pittsburgh is in for a rough day.
