The expected that wasn't quite expected happened.

Game Ball Time!

Mine goes to the secondary. Did a great job holding down a fast and athletic receiving group.

Let Luck and the Colts come down for another beat down Thursday!

The entire defense gets a game ball.
Sony Michel, James White, and the OL.
Josh Gordon for making positive plays every time the ball game to him.

The entire defense. Getting some guys back helped, but they basically said “you’re not throwing on us. Period. So run it if you can.” And the Dolphins basically soiled themselves in reaction.

I know the Dolphins d-line was missing a few good players, but other than the three-penalty play, the Pats O-line was solid, keeping Brady upright and getting White and Michel some room to show their stuff.

They tried this last week, too - and Detroit ran all over them. The guys up front controlled the line of scrimmage much better today.

I thought Simon stood out in the pass rush. Van Noy was really active. They did everything well defensively, really. No big plays, controlled the run game, contained Tannehill (1 rush for 0 yards), and they forced a lot of short stuff and tackled after the catch. Not a ton of sacks but Tannehill didn't have much for clean pockets and had to get rid of the ball sooner than he wanted and/or under duress.

OL much improved, too. Michel had much bigger holes and responded accordingly. White had a nice game. Brady wasn't really sharp but made big throws when he had too - Dorsett also dropped what was probably his best throw of the night.

Not game-ball-worthy but it was nice to see Cyrus Jones field five punts without incident, and even have a couple decent returns. His 24-yarder early in the second was a career-long.

Game ball to the Pats' tackling until garbage time. Runs went nowhere (56 yards running, almost all in the 4th). In passing, Miami's YAC was basically nonexistent, with the secondary and LBs keeping everything in front of them, and immediately, surely tackling each time. Truly impressive effort. Game ball to Brady as well, not just for a solid GOAT passing, but for directing the blocking pre-snap on the White rushing touchdown to make for an easy cutback.

I'm tossing game balls to BB, Josh McD and Brian Flores for getting the team to do a 180 after last week's shitshow. I can't believe how good the Pats looked today given how crappy they looked last week.

They deserve an amount of praise equal to or greater than the flak they caught last week.

Absolutely. This team came ready to play today and I’d be pretty surprised if they played a poor game on Thursday. Some tough games coming up so Indy at home has to be a win.

Dorsett was very good in this game. His TD grab was spectacular. And he showed strong effort throughout the game after being almost invisible last week. On Brady's first half interception Dorsett was fighting for the ball and almost took it away. Hope he can continue with strong play and earn his targets.

Quarter way through check-in. I’m still on the “I have some serious reservations about the defense” boat. But I expected our DTs to get better. With an average front 4 and our secondary the only true glaring weakness is still the LBs. Van Noy is the guy on the unit with the most speed and imo best modern skill set. Roberts is still there which ultimately will be a problem. Hightower looked better this week (or sounded better for those of us forced to listen by radio).
On a side note I would love it if someone PM’d me or posted and enlightened me on how to stream things legally like the Pats game. I have SlingTV and CBS so I certainly try to get the Pats every week but I don’t have direct TV and I don’t think I have access to season ticket. I have an Xbox one of that makes a difference (not aware of any NFL packages on Xbox one).
The better the front four plays the easier it is to mask the problems with the LBs. I think the DTs underperformed in the first few games. I’m optimistic that Shelton is going to be stout. Same with Brown. Guy and Butler offer you something in the pass rush.
The defense relies on Trey Flowers. He’s either our best defender or at least in the running for it. He’s definitely the best defender in the front 7. Flowers is the most consistent pass rusher. He’s great against anything you throw at him. This is a solid edge group.
The front 4 has a lot of average to above average pieces (some very good) that should work well together. Flowers, Wise, Guy, Butler, Clayborn, etc. give you a pass rush. To me how effective the front 4 are will dictate how season goes for the defense.

As for Sony... I get why people didn’t like the pick or the position. Personally I get it and think it was a fine pick. Eventually Sony is going to be a better receiver. It wouldn’t surprise me if it took him a year or two to develop into that complete player. But when he does put it all together look the fuck out. He’s still predictive out there as a runner (did anyone notice if he was on the field when they passed?). They went for BPA for their team. Sony was such a perfect fit. I was drooling about him myself but figured B.B. wouldn’t go for an RB before he would be snatched up. Now if you told me before the draft that Penny would get drafted before Sony but that Sony would be a first round pick I would have looked like you just told me you were a time-traveling-alien but I digress.

I do have my issues with the offense too but I want to see what they look like with Jules and Hollister back and Gordon getting more time in. Fully staffed I believe this should be a good receiving group. White, Jules, Gronk should be reliable and hopefully Gordon, Hogan, Hollister, Patterson, Dorsett, etc. can pick up any remaining slack. Tom is adjusting to his rotating personnel or at least that’s what it looks like. But if Gordon doesn’t give them much and Jules doesn’t have much left in the tank this could be a difficult year. I’m cautiously optimistic about the group but it’s very much a WIP. The RB rotation and whether we run or pass with who is out there is a potential problem too. It’s a shame that Hill and Burkhead are out because they were also two guys who showed something in the running and passing game (Hill looked very good in his short time here). Sony’s rawest skill coming out was his receiving so I am not sure he will be that dual-threat guy in year 1. That’s normal by the way. White took some time. Remember him in 2014/2015 vs 2016 or 2017? I do expect Sony to be more of a target though because he can’t be a tell that they will run it to him the whole year. Maybe get him started with some screens? I hear he’s good in space.

Lots of questions for me still. This team is never dull.

If you need help using your SlingBox to get CBS Boston, post in the Tech forum. Personally, I only deal in reddit streams, which are far less authorized than even your approach, but also far easier to navigate (as long as you have a good ad blocker).

As for the offense, let's remember we're down a mid first rounder who was projected to be a starting offensive lineman. The protection was a B+ at best today, with Andrews and Thuney looking good but the others having some shaky moments.

Game balls for me start with Van Noy, for that spectacular fumble recovery but also blowing up several other plays that he didn't get the eventual tackle on.

Dorsett and Patterson both had great individual games. I'll credit McDaniels for a game plan that used our variety as a weapon.

Game balls to:
- secondary for great coverage
- Van Noy for fumble recovery
- Sony Michel for providing several good runs
- James White for pass-catching out of the backfield and 2 TD's
- McDaniels for using Patterson to great effect
- Patterson for executing perfectly
- Josh Gordon for making few big catches
- Dorsett for providing another reliable target for Brady, despite one bad drop.

On to Indianapolis!

Gordon's block on the White rushing TD in the 2nd quarter was outstanding.

Michel is going to be a player, but he's a different runner than the ones that are the popular names today. He's not a jump-cutter or someone with great quickness. His game is very much to look for the hole and hit the gas. Even going back and watching his Georgia tape, he doesn't have a ton of true lateral agility, more that he has the ability to turn well at speed. But he's not someone who changes pace very much, though I think yesterday he was meshing better as far as his timing goes, which seemed to be an issue against the Lions.

Jury is still out on the D, but I've always thought they'd figure it out on offense. Get through Thursday, and then let's see if we can slow KC down in a couple weeks.

The little open field move that Patterson made in the open field was really great to watch on what may have been the biggest play of the season so far. For a lot of receivers that’s first and ten at the 20.

Pats were kind of stagnant up until then. That was a real jump start.

It seemed like a lot of his big runs were off the edge; I think that can be a pretty powerful counter to teams trying to flood the middle on the Pats. Michel is fast enough to get to outside and big enough that CBs have a hard time tackling him. If defenses are going to put extra guys inside to take away Gronk (and Edelman), pull the athletic interior OL, crack on the inside guys, and get Michel into the open field against corners.

That was a great counter to press. If they're going to play up on the LOS, they're easy to rub off, and a few big plays make pressing less appealing. They really made hay on third down against the Dolphins, and they weren't all third and shorts, either.

Patterson really does remind me of 2007 Stallworth when he has the ball in his hands. Was great to see him 1) catch the ball and 2) re-balance himself to run upfield and score the TD. He's not an easy guy to take down in the open field so hopefully we can get him the ball in space a couple times a game. Most of those quick passes at the line of scrimmage are doomed from the beginning.

Just finished rewatching the game. Michel was terrific. So was White. Brady had a few bad throws for sure, but made some excellent ones. The TD to White in the corner was incredible actually. Patterson was solid. The D played a fantastic all around game. Good pressure, good run stoppage, excellent coverage at all levels. Just a well-played, tremendous overall effort by the Pats. Game balls to Michel, White, and Gordon (for the block and making his first positive contribution to the team). Pretty much everyone on D played well so it's hard to single anyone out.

Little things mean so much. On the Patterson TD, the corner is up pressing at the LOS, which is obviously important to prevent a free release. But when White relocates with motion he stays within the 1 yard distance and he can be blocked. If he's 2 yards off, White can't block him and pic rules come into play, but by staying that close, it give White freedom to make contact. Huge play in the game and a tiny detail like that makes all the difference.

It's possible he wasn't doing anything other than pressing and handing him off immediately. He doesn't chase after contact, but I think he was going to run with him if he wasn't blocked/picked.

Simon looks super interesting. Some great pressure in the second half and yet maintained containment.

It really was a big win, as they otherwise would have been essentially 4 games behind the lead for the division, which mathematically would have been tough to make up, especially with the next game against the Dolphins being in Miami.

Seems like there was just better execution all the way around. I've thought some of their earlier struggles were of execution; it's not like the interior OL, which was returning much the same unit as last season, suddenly got old. Similar comment would apply to the DL. One game will not allay all my concerns about the defense, especially as it's quite possible that Miami's fast start may have been a bit of a mirage as well. But, still, the D gets the game ball, especially for keeping the game in hand in the first quarter while the Pats offense was still finding its legs a little bit.

Michel gets the other ball, as his hard running early set the tone. Only thing missing was Bill Parcells sending him to Canton, which worked well in the past.

Honorable mentions to the coaching staff for making the necessary adjustments and picking this game as the one to get Gordon incorporated into the offense. They most likely won't have Gronk on Thursday, but hopefully with Gordon and the return of Edelman they should still be OK against Indy.

+1 here. As many have well-noted, one can find many players worthy of deserving Game Balls. But in a sense, when the credit can be that widely, and deservedly spread, it likely means that a lot of credit goes to the coaches.

Gannon, who I thought was generally awful, commented (I think) about how the Pats had rededicated themselves this week to fundamentals. It showed, especially in the trenches.

I've been beating the drum of how important it was to stop the run, especially on early downs, primarily for the knock-on effects for making a team one-dimensional. I saw this list on BSJ.com for some of the Dolphin down-and-distances:
  • 2nd and 17
  • 3rd and 12
  • 3rd and 10
  • 2nd and 10
  • 3rd and 10
  • 3rd and 13
  • 2nd and 10
  • 3rd and 8
  • 2nd and 22
  • 3rd and 24
  • 2nd and 14
  • 3rd and 12
  • 2nd and 10
It's hard for any offense to do much in those situations. But so much better than the endless supply of short distances for the Lions:
  • 2nd and 4
  • 2nd and 3
  • 2nd and 2
  • 3rd and 3
  • 3rd and 2
  • 2nd and 1
  • 2nd and 4
  • 3rd and 1
  • 3rd and 1
And that doesn't even include the number of times that the Lions gained more than 10 yards on 1st down.

Legally? No, not LEGALLY.

Have you considered an antenna to get over the air broadcasts? Works for everything but MNF and NFL.com-only TNF but I believe you can get MNF direct from espn.com

Yeah, and I mean, grabbing a stream from reddit isn't technically legal but since Sunday Ticket isn't available everywhere, I don't have much of a moral quandary watching someone stream the game from the part of the country that's receiving it.

Thank you. Honestly I'd rather save the $20-$50 it costs to go to a bar and watch the game. And if it's a weekend where I have the kids that's not possible anyway. I will check it out. Appreciate the advice.

To back up some claims about the injured players on defense coming back and having an impact, here are some stats provided by Doug Kyed of NESN.

Patriots defense with Trey Flowers on the field:

2.62 yards per carry
4.86 yards per pass

Patriots defense with Trey Flowers off the field:

4.86 yards per carry
6.2 yards per pass

On the other end of the spectrum:

Patriots defense with Keionta Davis on the field:

5.36 yards per carry
8.36 yards per pass

Patriots defense with Keionta Davis off the field:

4.31 yards per carry
6.08 yards per pass
