Technically Chiarelli wasn't available for the 2006 draft since the B's hired him relatively late in the game and the Sens made him finish out his contract with them. No idea what reality was.

Yeah, I overstated it, it's really from 2007-2013 as TFP points out. I certainly wouldn't judge the result of his entire tenure by it since the book is still out. Only that had he done a better job in that area during those years, he'd probably still be here to see the fruits of his later drafts.

What would be interesting, but time consuming, would be to look at the overall value provided via his drafts vs. the average value a generic team could expect to get. Did drafting a handful of very high end talent in a couple years ultimately outweigh all the busts? Or would it have been better to hit consistently, but at a lower ceiling?

Specific to Spooner, he almost certainly passed the eye test during the draft evaluations. He is undeniably an elite skater with an exceptional skill set. The difficulty of the draft is trying to project how a 150# 18 year old will progress physically and how well he will be able to compete when his speed advantage is significantly lessened against NHL players. As others have said the draft is a lottery ticket. I don't think Spooner has shown anything that indicates he wasn't worthy of his draft position. The upside is still fairly high and if it wasn't for his lack of physical development when he became draft eligible there is a good chance he would have gone much earlier.

The drafts starting to turn around really began in '14 which coincides with the first draft Gretzky ran as Director of Amateur Scouting. Gretzky followed Chiarelli to Edmonton. Curious to see what kind of impact Gretzky had on the draft. Too soon to get a read on Chiarelli's draft without Gretzky in Edmonton, and the Bruins haven't had a draft without him yet.

Kirk has an upcoming blog post on this that I'm looking forward to, inspired by the amount of questions he gets on Twitter about the role of scouting director (he actually got a bit snippy with me asking him about it).

Back to Cassidy, it looks like Liles is going in for C. Miller tomorrow.

I'm really not a fan of sitting C. Miller. He's been one of their 3-4 best defenseman this year. I think an argument could be made that Carlo could use a few games in the press box, but not Miller.

Wonder if it is related to C Miller taking a couple penalties last game.
Agree he is one of the top 3-4 D.

Me neither, C. Miller has been really good and should be in. Carlo could use a break for a game or 2, he hit a wall a while ago.
