Hi all - it's that time of year again (give or take the couple of weeks added by the NFL). As in prior years, I'd like to continue the tradition of setting up a contest, finishing last or close to it, and making a contribution to a worthy cause in the name of a more clued-in SoSHer.

So - here we go! Once again...

You get to name 20 players who you think the Pats will/might pick.

Three points for each player selected in the first three rounds - 4 for round 4, 5 for round 5, 6 for round 6, 7 for round 7, and 8 pts for naming UDFAs signed by the Pats within 72 hours of the end of the draft.

Free to enter, and bragging rights for whoever picks best - plus I'll donate $100 to the SoSH marathon fund in the name of whoever wins.

In the event of a tie, the earliest entry is the winner.

Looking forward to hearing what/who you think the Pats will add through the draft!

I'll go first - heck, if I can't win the contest, I may as well win the tiebreaker!

    Marcus Martin - C
    Weston Richburg - C
    Tyler Larsen - C

I think the Pats are upgrading this position early in the draft. Of course, they could accompish the same net outcome by upgrading guard...

    Xavier Su'a-Filo - G
    Ryan Groy - G

There's some need for an RB, and maybe a developmental QB. Going with a Reiss binky for the latter:

    Marion Grice - RB
    Tom Savage - QB

...and one TE on my list:

    Troy Niklas - TE

On the other side of the ball:

    Louis Nix - DT
    Stephen Tuitt - DT
    Shamar Stephen - DT
    Ryan Cerrethers - DT
    Dee Ford - DE
    Josh Mauro - DE

    Ryan Shazier - LB
    Devon Kennard - LB

    Deone Bucannon - S
    Brock Vereen - S
    Vinnie Sunseri - S
    Daniel Sorensen - S

    What do you guys think?

Unsurprisingly, this list is skewed towards the first few rounds because I am more familiar with those prospects.  Probably not smart from a strategy standpoint given the stated rules, but oh well.

I'm a nerd so I decided to be a little rigorous about this. I used a simple, arbitrary rubric as follows:
    - Meeting: -1 points if the Pats were reported to meet with or have interest in a player. They rarely pick the players they are linked to
    - Size: -2 to +2 points based on a player meeting height / weight requirements. Not every position seems to have this (for instance, they don't seem to care a ton about WR height). QBs I used hand size and height.
    - Combine: -2 to +2 points based on Combine performance in various drills. 3-cone for almost every position, vert. jump, 40 time for some. For QBs, I just gave a +1 if a guy has good arm strength.
    - Intangibles: +1 if a guy went to a school with a BB connection, is noted for ST play, or seems particularly Pats-y.

These are arbitrary and obviously I don't have complete info for everybody. But whatever.
    By position:
QB - best (+2): Logan Thomas, Jeff Mathews, A.J. McCarron, Tom Savage, Zach Mettenberger; worst (-2): Jordan Lynch, Connor Shaw
RB - best (+2): James Wilder, Charles Sims; worst (-3) Ben Malena
WR - best (+2): Kevin Norwood; worst (-2): Kelvin Benjamin
TE - best (+3): C.J. Fiedorowicz, (+2) Nic Jacobs; worst (-3) Colt Lyerla
OL - best (+4): Joel Bitonio, (+3) Taylor Lewan, Zach Martin; worst (-3) Jon Halapio
DL - best (+2): Ra'Shede Hageman; worst (-3) Kelcy Quarles
ER - best (+2): several tied, including Trent Murphy, Kony Ealy, Kareem Martin; worst (-3) Michael Sam
LB - best (+2): Ryan Shazier; worst (-1) several tied
CB - best (+2): Philip Gaines, Rashaad Reynolds; worst (-2): LaMarcus Joyner, Ken Gilstrap, Nevin Lawson
S - best (+3): Deone Bucannon; worst (-2): Hakeem Smith, Alden Darby

Here's my final list (with some wild cards):
    Zurlon Tipton, RB, Central Michigan
    James Wilder, RB, Florida State
    Charles Sims, RB, West Virginia
    Kevin Norwood, WR, Alabama
    Joel Bitonio, OL, Nevada
    John Urschel, OL, Penn State
    Corey Linsley, OL, Ohio State
    Garrett Scott, OL, Marshall
    C.J. Fiedorowicz, TE, Iowa
    Nic Jacobs, TE, McNeese State
    DaQuan Jones, DL, Penn State
    Ra'Shede Hageman, DL, Minnesota
    Brent Urban, DL, Virginia
    Kareem Martin, ER, North Carolina
    Will Clarke, ER, West Virginia
    Jordan Tripp, LB, Montana
    Dontae Johnson, DB, NC State
    Deone Bucannon, S, Washington State

Looks like we're about ready for the draft! We've gotten 21 entries to date, naming a total of 150 potential draftees/UDFA signings. The smart folks here (plus me) are looking for new blood on both lines, at TE and at S. Here's what we've seen so far...

Stephen Tuitt (named by 16 of the 21 folks playing) - DT
    Brock Vereen (12) - S
    Joel Bitino (12) - OT
    C.J. Fiedorowicz (11) - TE
    Troy Niklas (11) - TE
    Xavier Su'a-Filo (11) - OG
    Daquan Jones (10) - DT
    Weston Richburg (10) - C
    Deonne Bucannon (8) - S
    Jordan Tripp (8) - LB
    Kareem Martin (8) - DE
    Louis Nix (8) - DT

    Good luck, all!

I have the feeling the following will happen

    1) The Pats will trade down again tonight.
    2) Mike Glennon will be traded for a 4th and a conditional 3rd next year
    3) Richburg will still be available come the time the Pats pick again and they will pounce.

List is alive and well, with only 1 name crossed off the list.

Thanks! Only 3 of my other picks are dead (Shazier, Buchanon and James) so holding out hope for more success!

Several of us had Easley but I'm downright shocked that he was a first round pick.  Those knees scare the hell out of me and I was hoping that he might even fall to the third round.   Risky stuff.

Only Bucannon off my list other than us getting Easley. Although it seems unlikely they will take one of the ND DLs unless this year is double down on DL time.

It appears that those of us who believed that BB was as tired as we are of watching the interior OL get run over in big games, were mistaken.

Three guys had this year's Ken Sims. Nobody had this year's Kevin O'Connell. Seven folks tied at 3 points going into day 3...

Well...not the one that Pats picked, anyway. Time will tell if he was the "wrong" one!

At least no one pulled a Ryan Logan this year, costing them a chance at a repeat win in this contest.

Nothing yet, but I've got a lot alive and there's a waffling report on Joe Don Duncan signing.
