Not sure about their cap structure, what guys they lose, etc, but that Kings team is loaded with talent, and not much of it is old.

They're right up against it, but they have Greene, Mitchell, and Gaborik going to UFA, and that's about 14M.

Brown's extension kicks in to the tune of nearly $3M more.

As a really casual watcher, I have to say that Doc is pretty damn great for a national broadcaster.  He clearly loves the sport more than anything and it comes across (forgive me for saying this cause I know there are quite a few folks here who will take issue with it).

I love listening to him broadcast a game

Not booing the commissioner is disgraceful and should result in immediate contraction

I'm a Doc fan as well, always will be. He's excitable and hokey at times, but has great pipes and a passion for the game.

My only problem with Doc was his continued mixing up of players, causing me great confusion.

Watching the Cup ceremony is also a lot better not live after your team didn't blow a one goal lead in the final 1.5 minutes.

I completely agree....even my father who knows close to nothing about hockey asked me who the announcer was and how he could make even the normal plays exciting.  In some game thread a long time ago, I remember seeing someone write that he announces a game with the enthusiasm of a little kid; and I have to agree.

And the NHL playoffs really are so much fun as I can easily see 4-5 teams with legitimate chances each year.  Even a five game series was exciting.

In the US, NBC can't punt coverage to NBCSN fast enough. Martin Jones JUST got the Cup when they rolled credits.

In Canada, they might have to pry Ron MacLean out of Staples Center to stop the CBC broadcast.

Too soon.... and yet I am totally in agreement.

My son, who was 8 last year, wanted to go to bed crying as soon as the horn sounded.  Hockey provided me with one of those sportsmanship "teaching moments", as I told him the best thing to do is respect the other team, watch the handshakes, and see the Cup.  I think it rubbed off on him playing soccer this year, as he never once complained about losing in a season that was pretty much lost from the start, and only ever talked about how good the other team was and what his team needed to do to get better.

I can't wait until hockey comes back in the fall.

Lundqvist almost got the second shot with the stick. Unbelievable.
And he looked absolutely devastated when the goal went in, despite having zero chance there or to come back in the series.

As awesome as these OTs were could you imagine if it was a meaningful game?

Still best trophy presentation in all of sports. The hand shakes and even beyond the moment when they give the cup to 'that guy' you get the time they hand it to the goalie.

That was a hell of a run by the Kings. Knocked off 4 legitimate Cup contenders on the way. Down 3-0 to San Jose, 3-2 to Anaheim, then they had to take on the defending champs who were looking like world beaters themselves. Crazy. 10-1 playoff series record over the last 3 season. They are damn close to unbeatable.

Bummed hockey is over, but the draft is in two weeks and then free agency a week after that. Then dev camp in July, and training camp in September. Time to start the journey, improve and reclaim the Cup.

Love it bro. Let's make the necessary changes to raise the Cup this time next year.

And yeah. Sticking around last year was a nut punch. But still worth it. If that makes any sense.
Still better considering I don't live and die with sports nowadays. Sucked for a few minutes but I got to see the Cup get raised by a team of non -shitheads. Worse things have happened. At least that was my rationalization.

Day after the game and I'm unbelievably depressed. I read similar things here last year when the B's were shocked with a minute left in Game 6. So close, yet so far. At least you had 2011. You never know when the team will get back there. The Rangers have some young talent and having Henrik helps quite a bit(he's got 4 years left, at least) but there are some UFA's on the team and I hope the Rangers can keep their core. Good bye Richards. You were great, until you were a statue. He will be bought out.

It is a cold, cruel world in the sporting world.

I wonder if Joe Thornton might be of interest to the Rangers. I think New York's biggest need is a legitimate #1 center since Brad Richards clearly isn't that guy, and I don't think Derek Stepan is more of a #2. Thornton and Rick Nash are close having played for the same Swiss team during both lockouts, so I'd assume Joe would have interest in playing for New York.

Best 5-game postseason series I've ever seen in any sport at any time. Incredible postseason overall despite the B's early exit.

I'll blame that one on the local affiliates, who depend on 11 pm news viewers for revenue the network doesn't provide. If other sports passed the trophy from player-to-player, the other networks would do the exact same thing NBC did. In fact, this is exactly what's happened with the Celtics, Pats & Sox after their championship wins. The trophy gets presented on a stage, and that's pretty much it. Then it's up to the local channels or the sports-exclusive networks to continue their coverage in the locker rooms. If anything, NBC deserves huge credit for not cutting to commercial ONCE after the winning goal was scored -- and that was after not being able to take any ad breaks during either of the overtimes aside from intermission. For the other three sports, you need the fingers on both hands to count the breaks taken between the end of the game and the trophy handover, not to mention how interminably long those breaks are.

Frankly, NBC merits serious praise for its in-game production of the hockey playoffs across the board. Yeah, I get the criticisms of Pierre, and I was hardly a fan of Kenny Albert's work. But on the whole, the presentation was superb and it absolutely blew away anything the other three major sports have done over the past decade and a half.

At every break in the action, when game events warranted, they were ready with replays of critical moments from multiple angles. Intermission commentary from Milbury, Jones, Roenick, Carter et al was always solid. The dialogue between play-by-play and color guys was seamless and without delay or stumbling over each other's words -- even with Pierre. The energy level of the broadcasts was consistently edge-of-your-seat, and it didn't matter what the score was or how much time remained. The audio was incredible, capturing both the energy and reactions of the crowds as well as every groove cut by skate blades, every stick hitting pucks & ice, and every hard check into the boards. More importantly IMO, there was no "pandering to the LCD" bullshit like roving reporters in the stands, in-game celebrity interviews, or the lame "let's teach you the most basic shit about this sport" graphics the folks at FOX and ESPN foist on viewers with annoying and insulting regularity.

Yes, much of it starts with Doc, who for his few flaws is not only the best hockey broadcaster in North America but for my money the best national sportscaster period. However, most of the other mic'd personnel should also take a bow, as should the producers, directors, engineers and camera operators.

Fuck, I'm going to miss this sport for the next few months.

Agreed about Doc. He is fantastic and the best. Across the board.

One day I'm going to sit down and learn the nuisances of the sport because nothing tops that action. I caught the OTs on my flight out of LAX headed to JFK and let out an audible "shit" when Martinez slapped it in so I guess I was rooting for the Rangers to win. What a game.

Follow the Bruins game threads here next year.  I've followed the Bruins since Orr, but I've learned a hell of a lot of "nuance" over the past few years here.  They are like bizzaro Red Sox game threads.

Don't forget Jesus himself taking over Trot Nixon's body and sending the fans home happy in game 3, which also featured lol boo hoo Eric Byrnes.
