It's weird....this should still be a very attractive job.  Some of last season's transfers may not have worked out well, but these players still have some value and the team itself has plenty of talent.  Maybe challenging for the league is a bit much, but Wenger's top 4 trophy is well within reach with the players available, imo.  It's just so, so critical that they get the manager right this time.

So it's Pochettino, De Boer or Benitez... or wild card - does Ancellotti get canned after losing the CL final?

Did Spurs really get £20M from Real as part of the Bale & Modric deals with La Decima?

http://www.101greatgoals.com/blog/spurs-will-earn-windfall-of-20m-for-real-madrid-winning-the-champions-league/

In other relatively good news, Vertonghen is staying:

http://www.goal.com/en/news/9/england/2014/05/25/4839660/vertonghen-ill-stay-at-tottenham-no-matter-the-manager

"I've got a couple more years at Tottenham and I'm happy and I want to stay there so it doesn't matter who the manager will be," the defender told Sky Sports.

"[De Boer] is a good manager but there are other good managers as well so, again, the chairman will make a good decision."

That's a nifty bit of business.

WIth Pochettino basically saying he's not leaving Sunderland (yet), and Lloris, Sandro, and Vertonghen all going public saying they are staying in the last few days...I'm willing to bet the deal is pretty much done.

And my guess would be de Boer.

Pochettino favours a very high pressing attacking style of football. He usually favours a 4-2-3-1 formation. While doing so, he instructs his team to build pressure from the back, intimidate and unsettle opponents easily. He has also been hailed by many pundits for his focus on developing local players from the clubs' youth academies

I'm not sad at all.

After van Gaal decided to troll Mourinho from Manchester, I wanted either de Boer or Pochettino as 1/1a, then the field.

Isn't it always?

I was talking about how I said right above that it was probably going to be de Boer because Pochettino spent basically a whole week saying "I'm sticking with Southhampton"

So, URI's butt aside, what do people think of his style of play?

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/may/27/five-things-mauricio-pochettino-tottenham-work

Pochettino, a former centre-back, favours an expansive approach and he says that he wants his teams to defend by winning and then keeping the ball. That may sound familiar to Tottenham fans, who grew tired with their team’s aimless, sideways passing under André Villas-Boas. Yet Pochettino’s sides can rarely be accused of sterile domination. Southampton have been a pleasure to watch, playing with pace, adventure, authority and invention, so expect to see attractive football at White Hart Lane.

I think we're going to see a lot of Lloris - Walker - Vlad - Jan - Rose - Sandro - Paulinho/Dembele - Ericksen - Lennon - Lamela - Ade assuming no transfers in or out.

The obvious upgrades are a ball-winning center back and a left back that doesn't suck shit (Benny?)

Depth on the wings, a backup keeper that isn't 73 years old and some striker depth would be good too, but I assume given Pochettino youngster love that we'll see Carroll and Kane get some burn.

I still don't like Bentaleb

Shouldn't Townsend be pushing Lennon aside by next year?

In a vacuum, I love his style, Southampton was really fun to watch last year. But I also loved AVB's style of play before he got to Tottenham.

Spurs failed miserably pressing teams this season, but they kept doing it anyway. Their back line is extremely ill suited to play a high line. I love Dawson but he can't move, it's best for both parties for him to move on, he is a square peg in a round hole. He'd be a valuable asset for a lower/mid table team playing a more conservative style. Vertonghen doesn't often make mistakes, but when he does, they are catastrophic. I can live with that with everything else he brings to the table, but he hasn't shown to be a consistently very good CB in the premier league yet. I thought Vlad was great on the ball but had questionable marking and recovery pace. Overall was not impressed. Kaboul is constantly hurt and not someone any team should count on. Naughton was a dumpster fire at LB, and somewhat less awful at RB. Walker is great going forward but makes his share of Vertonghen-esque bad plays in his own half. I like Danny Rose. I don't think their back line is nearly good enough right now. Maybe there's a chance Dejan Lovren follows Pochettino to Spurs? That would be huge.

I'll save my venting about the rest of the team for another day.

I guess it depends on if you want a winger who is going to try to link with Walker and Eriksen, or one that will rifle shots 10yds wide of goal while Adebayor stares at him from the box.

You criticize Vertonghen as someone who is not a consistently very good CB in the Premier League, and call Naughton a dumpster fire...but you like Danny Rose?

My opinions were relatively speaking. Of course Vertonghen is infinitely better and more valuable to the team than Rose. I was more pointing out his inconsistency and penchant for terrible plays. I meant to say is that he's usually very good, but sometimes very bad.

And I was just saying that I like Danny Rose for what he is, a decent part time / backup LB. I don't think he sucks shit, that's all.

It's still odd because Rose is clearly the weak link on the back line, and upgrading the LB should be a priority.

I'm more saying that Rose's penchant for terrible plays is him being consistent, and that he's very bad, and sometimes, kinda good.

Does this mean he will have to start giving interviews in English? He's been very cagey with this in the past...the dude can speak English at least as well as most Scots. More people care about what he has to say, especially when Levi starts sticking his neb into footballing affairs. Will there be a public circumcision, i hear he has not been 'cut'. I just think if he wants to win over the fractured, splintered dressing room, and hit the ground running, few things work better than whipping out a nice proud purple helmet first day of training, it sends a signal. AVB didn't do this and he's on the scrap heap. Sherwood never had the opportunity and it aged him several years in as many several months.

We wish him well.

The Metro says that we're bidding £15m for Dejan Lovren, and his agent is going to London a the beginning of the week to hammer out personal terms.

The article also says its to "operate alongside Michael Dawson" so I put the odds of this being accurate at 15%.

I have that one too, even though I've bought one the last few years.

The Underarmor cut isn't as good as Puma's, either.

Anyone watch White, Blue and White, the ESPN 30 for 30 about Ossie Ardiles?

http://espn.go.com/30for30/film?page=whiteblueandwhite

Also, I'll drink the Kool-Aid: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2682455/Erik-Lamela-eager-Premier-League-start-Tottenham-Hotspurs-record-signing-gets-stuck-pre-season-training.html

Erik Lamela is eager for a fresh start in the Premier League this season after Tottenham Hotspur's record-breaking signing took to Twitter to tell of their pre-season training.

The winger, compared to the departed Gareth Bale at times last year, was bought from Roma for £30million, but struggled to adapt to the English game and was sidelined by on-off injuries.

The 22-year-old, however, seems keen to put that behind him, with new manager Mauricio Pochettino at the helm after arriving from Southampton.

True, but ESPN being ESPN:

Argentinian Ossie Ardiles left home to play soccer in England. Then on April 2, 1982, Argentinian troops descended on the British-ruled Falkland Islands. He returned home with his future in doubt

AND WHY DIDN'T YOU COMMENT ON LAMELA????

Yeah.

Ossie is the more compelling character in the narrative of the doc obviously, but Villa came with him, and is just as important to the story of the Argentines arriving in English soccer.

http://metro.co.uk/2014/07/05/why-swansea-citys-ben-davies-can-help-tottenham-hotspur-restore-balance-to-the-flanks-4787011/
We’ve seen little recent activity aside from releasing some youth players and saying goodbye to Jake Livermore. The Ben Davies to Spurs story appears to be the first substantiated transfer line making it more than just a rumour.

Currently Swansea are holding out for more money. Which is understandable as Davies is highly rated and we’re utterly desperate to solidify the left-back position. We’ll need a couple of left-backs just in case though, what with injuries and the Europa League, unless Zeki Fryers is perceived as a trustworthy back-up.

Davies is a nice target for your LB problems. Maybe Dawson goes the other way as part of the transfer package?

Why would Swansea want an immobile, expensive center back?

The fact that Hull are after him is surprising enough.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2684677/Spurs-set-offer-5m-Nottingham-Forest-defender-Jamaal-Lascelles.html

Tottenham are set to table a £5million offer for Nottingham Forest defender Jamaal Lascelles by the end of the week.

The England Under-20 international is one of the hottest prospects outside the Barclays Premier League and has attracted interest from a host of top-flight clubs.

But Spurs will look to steal a march on their rivals in the race for Lascelles, 20, by formalising their interest this week.

It goes on to say that Tottenham would loan him back to Nottingham Forest if they wanted that to smooth the deal over.

Another story saying Spurs offered Gylfi to Swansea to help bring Davies (and Vorm) over.

Today's installment: http://metro.co.uk/2014/07/09/tottenham-set-to-make-17million-bid-for-arsenal-transfer-target-julian-draxler-4791880/
Tottenham are set to make a £17million bid for Schalke play-maker Julian Draxler as the club kick-on with their transfer plans.

Draxler, who has been chased by Arsenal in recent months, has emerged as one of Mauricio Pochettino’s top summer targets.

The Argentine manager wants to build a hungry, young and technical side and reports in Germany say Draxler is seen as a key part of his plans.

According to two Gelsenkirchen newspapers, Schalke are bracing themselves for a £17million offer from Tottenham which could go in within the next few days.

Draxler is obviously a very good player, and would help this team a lot.

But I fear this means no Julian Green, who was "DONE DEAL!!!!" before the window opened.
