And again.

And a red. A shitty, shitty red.

So, it'll be awesome when Vertonghen wants to leave to play Champions League after that huge fuck-up may have buried his team.

It just seems the shittiest rule in soccer. Sure, there are occasions where a player (usually the keeper) hacks down a foe certain to score, when it may seem reasonable to give both a penalty and a red. But most of the time, there's some element of doubt. Here, it did look like Eto'o was going down easily. The penalty call is justifiable, if debatable. Adding a sending off to it has much too great an impact on the game. This game ended at that moment.
Is it too much to ask FIFA to reconsider this automatic policy? Methinks it is.

Three straight games against teams above them that featured a decent start, a red and then getting blown out.

Two of those reds will be rescinded.

Was a real bummer, as the makeshift lineup fought hard for ~54 minutes. Were the better squad before a dreadful error and the egregious call and send-off ended the match.
The rest was shame on a shit sandwich.

Peter Berlin at SI.com noted that Tottenham brought in seven players and recalled two others from loans this summer during the Bale sale. Not one of those players made the starting 11 yesterday.

I think the wrong guy got whacked when AVB was shown the door. Baldini had as bad a year as anyone in the EPL, including Vincent Tan.

No AVB needed to go.  And Vincent Tan is literally destroying his team.

I mean, Harry Kane and Andros Towsend came back from loan.  Kane was never in a billion years going to start in this game.  I'll give you Townsend I guess, but Walker and Gyfli played out wide.  So perhaps Andros would have started over Gyfil.

Ericksen, Lamela, Chiriches, and Capoue are hurt.  Chadli and Townsend play the same position.  Once Sherwood picked a 4-2-3-1, Soldado wasn't going to start over Adebayor.

So Peter Berlin noticed that Spurs brought in 9 players over the summer, and didn't start Paulinho, who was arguably a better choice than Bentaleb, and Townsend, who might have been a better pick than Siguardsson.

Fire Baldini after 8 months!

Peter Berlin noticed that Arsenal play better with Aaron Ramsey in the lineup, so he should have played against Liverpool a few weeks ago.

I think he was anyway only getting an 18mon deal.

But yes, I fully expect Louis van Gaal to be manager next year.  Which would be awesome for Paulinho and Dembele, specifically, but it takes a couple years generally for van Gaal's system to work.

And a Mourinho/van Gaal media feud is already giving me a chubby.  The only thing that will be awesomer will be the two of them both trolling Wenger.

At some point The Top Tottenham Jews will have to give some manager a decent run at it. I mean, they're no better off from when they had 'arry at the reins. They may have a better squad now but building a team takes time. All this finish fourth or it's your jotters is nonsense, and counter productive. I've lived in Stamford Hill. I 'ave. I know what these people want.
It's not a revamp of the squad, it's not a new manager every year...maybe a manager who gets to buy the players he wants would be nice. You'd think LvG would get that where AVB did not. TS was a SG, we all knew that even if he didn't.

The EPL is at it's weakest for some time. If Spurs don't crack the top four next year, it's not going to get any easier.

I think I've said this before but I really hate the North London Derby.

I mean, sure, if we win, it's all the sweeter, but I really find Arsenal and their fans distasteful, and I don't think the positive of a win is worth the the negative of a loss.  Combine that with it being 90 minutes of squeeky bum time, and the lead up being pure adrenaline...I really just don't enjoy it very much.

So who on Spurs is going to pick up a red and have it rescinded today?

My money is either on Vertonghen or Sandro.

Verthongen is a good choice.  I think Sandro is an injury doubt.  They could be without Adebayor, Sandro, Dawson, Capoue, Lamela, Walker, Dembele, and Chiriches.  Not that they can complain too much since Arsenal are missing Ozil, Walcott, Ramsey, and Wilshire.

I really hope Eriksen gets played in the middle rather on the wing.  He's the only really creative passer in the squad.

Sandro and Adebayor healthy enough to play.  Team: Rose, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Naughton, Townsend, Sandro, Eriksen, Bentaleb, Chadli, Adebayor.

Looks like 4-2-3-1 with Eriksen as the #10.  Over/under on # of shots Townsend fires into row Z from 30 yards out is currently 3.5.  I have the over.

Don't understand why Soldado sat against Benfica in favor of Harry Kane if he wasn't going to start against Arsenal.

Spurs outplay opponent, can't link midfield to striker, scoreline favors opponent.

Great.

Chadli was like the 5th biggest problem today if he was one at all.  This was his best game in a while.

I thought Chadli and Townsend were by far their best players yesterday, creating most of their chances.

Watched the first half vs. Benifica yesterday. Two questions and an observation:
1. Soldado has to be gone at the end of the season, right?
2. Why was Sherwood in the stands?

1. I'm pretty sure that if he had a shovel, Friedel would have dug a grave for the guy playing leftback, then killed said guy with said shovel then covered the grave and he wouldn't have had a moment of regret or guilt. Just atrocious defending leading to an easy cross and goal.

Sherwood was in the stands because of what he said after the first Benfica match right?

It was voluntary, he hadn't been suspended or anything. His thinking was he'd see the play on the pitch better (which is correct) but I think he also wanted to avoid the obvious non-shaking of hands with the Benfica manager that would have happened.

He should have been on the touchline for the 2nd half though. Poor managing, really.

Sherwood started this match in the stands, but moved to the sideline when they went down.

Eriksen is having an excellent game.

And Gylfi saves your bacon. Southampton looked more likely to have something happen and then BOOM!, Tottenham with the goal.

This game is why I just love the game and not a team. Heartbreaker for the Saints.

I hate that midfield so much.  I really wish Tim would flip out Bentaleb, Chadli, and Sigurdsson for Dembele, Sandro, and Townsend

Does Bentaleb have naked pictures of Timmy somewhere?  What exactly has he done that he deserves to be starting every game?

10 yard passes that have no ambition or positivity, and 10+ passes that set up Sturrage/Suarez.

I think Benteleb has played the most minutes of anyone under Sherwood.

So in December, AVB plays Liverpool with a rigid high line.  The back four had Walker - Dawson (bad knees) - Capoue (is defensive liability) - Naughton (is Kyle Naughton).  The Spurs midfield is forced to collapse back and shows no ability to hold possession and link up to Soldado, who is alone up top and unable to put pressure on a shaky Liverpool defense.  Liverpool slices up the back line by playing into pockets and dominates the game.

Yes!  Vertonghen is hurt so Michael Dawson is coming on for him.

Dawson who is already 3 steps too slow, and battling a hamstring issue.

Holy fucking shit.  That took no time at all.

Spurs have the personnel to make life difficult for Liverpool. They aren't set up to do it, though.

4-5-1, pack it in to make Liverpool work though the middle. Coutinho turns it over a lot under pressure and has a hard time linking with his strikers.

Clear the ball wide and put long passes up the channels to a speedster like Lennon as the sole striker. Yes, it's using him differently, but Liverpool's back line gets confused easily during counters. And hell, this isn't working.

So you're saying that Tim Sherwood didn't consider something that everyone who has watched both teams play would think is self-evident?

Is it too early in the morning to be violently drunk?

What is the deal with Sherwood sitting in the stands? I do not get it. Please explain it to me.

All joking aside, this is the worst game I've ever seen him play.  Not only were both goals his fault directly, but the tremendous Lloris save prevented #3 to be on his jacket too.

I really, really love Yonnes' game about 80% of the time, but he's fucking terrible today.

You mean Rebecca Löew?

I've read that Sherwood prefers the stands because he gets a better view. It must be hard to think when opposing fans are right behind you and presumably shouting abuse.

That supposes that it's easy for him to think when he's on the touchline being trolled by the Portuguese.

I think I'm handling today well, net-net.  I might go post a picture of my balls in OJ's quiz thread.
