Assuming we beat the Colts, it's entirely possible Knowshon runs for 400 yards against us in Denver.
If I remember correctly almost all those runs came against the nickel when we were daring Pey-OC to run and he did. Spikes wouldn't be on the field in those situations.

The last time the Pats had an undrafted SMU defensive player come up from the practice squad and played in the playoffs they went to the Super Bowl (Sterling Moore with a tad saving pass defended).
Two of them in fact, on back to back plays.

He got downgraded from probable to questionable right before the Broncos game.  Might have been a factor, he's been banged up for awhile.

EDIT: That was the first time he appeared on the injury report, so he probably either hurt it against Carolina or in practice.  They added him that Thursday and I didnt see anything in the play-by-play with  Spikes getting injured, so might have been in practice.

Here
Mort just said that Spikes could have played through the injury, but was placed on IR because he missed a meeting, which was the final straw. Apparently, he's had a number of issues that have gone unreported.

Mortenson just reported Spikes healthy, missed practice Fri 1/3 due to snow; BB furious, almost cut him; IR compromise; will be FA next.

ESPN Sunday NFL Countdown saying Spikes was placed on season ending IR after and because he missed Pats team meeting.  Pretty interesting if its true.  I'm sure Spikes being banged up played a role but that's a pretty drastic step for missing a team meeting.  It also means he's definitely not coming back next year.

where I was last at
Whole new twist to Spikes season ending injury/ IR

Just heard on ESPN Spikes missed a practice because of snow, and BB went off on him, and rather than cut him out right IRed him instead.

How disruptive was this guy that he gets cut when he could have played?

Not healthy, but could have played through the injury.

I thought the timing of his IR was unusual, given that he played the last game and they took an additional week to IR him, so I guess this makes sense.

What a dumbass.

If you had told me a year ago there was an insane murder on the team and asked me to guess who...

This is unbelievable.  I obviously never had faith in Spikes as an individual but the fact that it was bad enough for BB to voluntarily IR his ~3rd best run defender...one week before a playoff game...in a year in which he involuntarily lost his 1st and 2nd best run defenders to IR is just astounding.  It sure seems like BB needs to do a better job focusing on character going forward.  Also, please beware of players from OSU/Urban Meyer.

Yeah, funny thing about that--Spikes was part of the two year campaign to draft a ton of captains to restore leadership to the locker room following the poisonous Adalius Thomas season. Spikes was considered a major leader at University of Florida and was much hyped for this coming into his rookie season. After his second season, Bleacher Report (right: meh) touted him as a natural leader.

I think Spikes is a classic case of how sometimes the idea of the emotional leader and a leader who instills drive with real discipline can get collapsed. Everything I've seen suggests that Spikes has a great passion for the game, but he's not Wilfork.

I do feel bad about his tardiness though. He tweeted on the day a photo of his car stuck in the snow, saying he couldn't get out.

Too bad he didn't think to get a car with four wheel drive and traction control--oh wait, is that a Porsch Cayenne with their Traction Management system? (I could be wrong.)

I wonder what time practice was that day.

Asked a source close to Brandon Spikes if being late to Friday practice helped lead to him being on IR. “Do you believe that stuff?”

I think the policy was well advertised by BB a couple of days before the snow, just like in 2009 with AD and Moss. Do whatever you have to do, get up as early as you have to, but be here on time. I wonder if he had the sense to call in and report his being stuck, if he even was really stuck. Like everyone else, I of course doubt that's all that went into putting him on the IR,  but I have no sympathy for this child-like dumbass who can't follow simple instructions about getting to work on time. Either way, safe to say we've seen the last of him.

Spikes was always a ticking time bomb. He is a good football player but he also seems to be insane. Not like Hernandez insane, but he also seemed like a suspension waiting to happen. It was a good run, Hightower has been play well, just just drafted Collins, the team will move on

I don't think we should read too much into the captain thing. I'm guessing a high percentage of high NFL picks were college captains. You highlight the 2010-11 drafts, but in 2012, Hightower, Wilson, and Bequette were all captains, and in 2013, Dobson and Beauharnais were (as was Joe Vellano). I might be missing a couple guys.

Did anyone read the section in Patriot Reign that talked about Lawyer Milloy? On one hand, he was a leader, someone who understood football inside and out, and one of Belichick's all-time favorites. On the other hand, he was outspoken and didn't always listen to authority and could be an all-time pain-in-the-butt. I get the same impression about Spikes - I bet Belichick loves him and hates him at the same time.

If your heart isn't in the war either because you want to win or support your teammates, you're never going to be ready for battle.

While disappointing in some respects, I love the move as it'll motivate someone to step up and that's how you maximize production.

Going to guess this is mostly BS. I doubt he will be back, but we've known that basically all year

P=T?

Spikes was the top-rated linebacker in the NFL at run-stopping during the first half of the season; second half-- bad knee, pretty average (actual negative PFF rating).

Production breeds tolerance.

He didn't pass the eye test the last few games. He was not the same player. I suppose it's a bit of BB being fed up and Spikes is not healthy enough to bring it like he usually does. Better to give his reps to Fletcher.

Gotta love Ty Law's take:

No way Spikes took that picture of his Cayenne.
He was alfeady in Florida starting his weekend off.

Now that would explain:

Missing the whole freaking day.
Bill cutting him.

You may recall that  Borges had a puff piece on Spikes' toughness in the Herald last week.

Did Ronnie know that Spikes was on the verge of being drop kicked and write that so he could set up a "Bill as dunce" if the Pats lost to the Colts?  It sounds a little Oliver Stone-ish but then again we're talking about biggest Bill Hater in the media outside of Fat Mike.

Not sure what the ultimate meaning of this report is, but thought it worth noting.

The tone of Spikes' agent's comments isn't really confrontational, it's almost as though he just wants to reassure potential suitors that Spikes is still a tough guy.
