The backdrop looks more like The Vet to me.  McCarver had never appeared in an AL game until late 1974, and this photo was probably taken before that.

Some of the mid-1970s Topps paint-overs are rather comical.  For McCarver, the painter managed to create a cap/shirt combo that never existed.

Never been a fan of any cap with the front two panels a different color. Caps should be solid but the brim can be a different color. Those are the only two acceptable options. The exception to this rule is sometimes the little button at the top can be a different color (even if the cap and brim are the same color).

I posit the Montreal Exception to the solid-color cap rule.

Always loved the Expos' unis - especially the powder-blue road unis:

I'm disappointed that the Washington Nationals adopted the Senators' "W" cap logo, when they have no connection to that franchise.  If I were emperor, I would have kept the 'Spos in Montreal, but failing that, when they moved to Washington, I would have kept the classic Expos uniform scheme, and just inverted the "M" to make a "W."

This would have been cool no matter whether the nickname was Nationals, or something else (not Expos, which was stupid to begin with even for Montreal, and had no connection to DC).

IIRC the Expos name was in honour of the Expo 67 Worlds Fair . Good marketing move to bask in the collective memory of what was, at the time, a marvellous event - which basically put Montreal on the world's stage.

Other than that it was a dumb name.

I love the Expos name. Better than a focus group'd animal name or some nonsense in the singular ("Magic," "Jazz" etc). That team had character because of the weird uniforms and the unique name.

And what to do in a pre-Photoshop world when you need a color photo but all you have is a black & white? Watercolors, baby!

I for one welcome the return of the sansabelt clown suit. May it be unusually hot and humid with about 8 bombs hit by about 7 Sox hitters.

And I may be the only one on the planet who would love to see the late '74 beanie become the official alternate cap.

Loved the throwbacks last night. Glad that at least some of the players wore striped stirrups. Kind of odd that some didn't... I mean, it's a uniform, the very meaning of the word would lead you to think you can't wear whatever socks you like, to say nothing of the rationale for not wearing them if given the choice.

It would be nice if they wore those unis once a year.

Mookie Betts on the throwback threads: "I love them. I think we should play with them every game."

All the coaches in stirrups. Farrell the odd man out.

The 75 unis had the waistband snaps on the side instead of in front...last night's were in front (like 99% of the uniforms of that era).

What baseball did revert to over time was more of a loose fitting, "baggier" look.   The original doubleknits were most certainly meant to be worn tight (or in the case of George Scott, VERY TIGHT, lol).   When the players wear them nowadays most of them still wear them loose and they look very sloppy.

I wonder who was the last team to officially get rid of the cotton flannel?     Pretty much when the waistbands came in the teams that kept the belts went to some version of polyester and have stuck with it.   The color of the whites went from creamy to real white at that time, I'm pretty sure.

Late to this party, but I bought a fitted Expos hat last summer, and was alternating between the one above and the 1993 version (solid blue).  The "classic" version just looks like a clown hat.   And bear in mind, they had other versions, too:

Anyway, I actually think the old Brewers hat works pretty well, in a gaudy sort of way, although I have heard the complaint that it looks too much like a cub scouts hat.

A shame they didn't haven't the red batting helmets to complete the ensemble.  At the plate it looked more like a tribute to the '73-74 teams.

But overall, they really looked great.  I'll echo JtB's comment in the game thread that these throwbacks should replace the Friday night red tops.

The Friday night red/blue tops are disgusting. I wish the Sox would get rid of them and like DNS says, replace them with the throwback style.

I've definitely mentioned this before, but I'd like to see the Friday night alternates be the cream-colored uniforms they've worn on a handful of occasions.

At least they figured out that the red ones in the daytime were too bright; they used to wear them on Sundays, didn't they?

The best thing they've done uni wise is go back to the red lettering on the road unis....the just-plain-navys were even duller than the Yanks.

I might be alone in this, but I wish they'd use the '75 hat as either a normal road or home hat, and keep the normal navy hat for the other. I think it's a great looking hat, and I've always liked different road/home hats for baseball uniforms.

Thanks for this.  That card stuck out and I wasn't sure what was going on.  I knew they painted hats and uni's but faces?  Couldn't they have shown Don Mossi a little love back in the day?

This is slightly off topic but I did not want to start a new thread...Does anyone know why Rico did not show up? He was a member of the 75 team obviously and as far as I know, on good terms with the team.  I watched the brief ceremony and did not hear him introduced. Did I miss something?

Glad someone else was thinking this as I was wondering as well where Rico was last night; if anyone has some info as to why he was not there, please pass it along..............as a kid, this was my favorite Uncles nickname for me, Petrocelli............

No to your question. The blue roads were a modernization of the 80s roads. And yes they sucked.

Just joking but anyways Rico was my father's favorite player from the 67 Impossible Dreamers. In 2007 when the 40th Anniversary of that team was honored, Rico was at a Borders in Boston for a meet and greet. It happened to be my father's bday so we went to see Rico. He was extremely friendly and generous with his time. He posed for pictures, and signed autographs.

That would be FANTASTIC.

Might not come as a surprise (look to my picture on the left...) but I LOVE these uniforms.  Not all the time, necessarily, but as Friday or Sunday uniforms?  Stellar.  And I completely agree that the batting helmet would complete the look.

Any chance these unis go up for sale with personalization? Dying for a #50 version and I only see Yaz/Tiant/etc on the shop.

Fans attending Saturday’s 4:10 p.m. game will receive a Rays retro headband, while supplies last.

The Rays will be wearing 1970s retro uniforms, while the Red Sox will wear replicas of their 1975 road uniforms.

My first question was "what jerseys are the Rays wearing??" before realizing that they're probably just wearing those retro-STYLE uniforms, and not technically throwbacks (since, you know, they don't have anything to throw back to):

[insert Maddon doofus joke here]

In any event, the Sox will be in '75 road unis:

I like the trim on the collar, although I'd like it if it was on the sleeve as well. In my perfect world, it would be a button down, but these ain't bad by any stretch. I imagine they will wear the red top-blue bill caps as well (and stirrups!):

Paul Lukas over at Uni Watch had a little factoid in today's post that I was never aware of, bolded for emphasis below. The topic is the 1972 All-Star Game, and he gets around to Carlton Fisk (who was curiously wearing a Brewers helmet, addressed earlier in the article, as the game featured several uniform-related oddities):

As you can see, he was wearing a pullover jersey and sansabelt pants. Lots of teams were moving to that format in the early 1970s, of course, but the interesting thing about that from a Red Sox perspective is that those newfangled uniforms were making their debut in the All-Star Game. Broadcaster Curt Gowdy mentioned this when Bosox outfielder Carl Yastrzemski came to bat in the top of the 4th:

I knew the switch was made sometime during the midseason, but wasn't sure when. Pretty cool moment for an unveiling.

Apropos of nothing, I think I'm the only one who liked the road unis from like 2009 - 2013. I liked the Blue / grey look, with the blue undershirts. Not that the current ones aren't good, but they just felt a little more subtle and not as loud. I also kind of liked the hanging socks hat; I picked an official one up at spring training in 2010 after forgetting my standard B hat. I know no one cares, but hey uniform discussion! :)

They should have stuck with the red hats and helmets with the blue bill from the 75 era.

Any baseball discussion is good in the offseason. It`s hard to keep up with the boards I follow inseason. This is all I have offseason. I follow baseball in the winter as much as posssible. I`m fighting the baseball DTs now.

You're not the only one. I thought they were beautiful.

I can accept the hanging sox hat, but I loathe — loathe! — the navy blue road alternate and red home alternate jerseys.

This is not a franchise for whom contrasting shirts and pants are acceptable. It makes them look like the Twins or something.

Have some self-respect.

Those unis are completely different. There's piping on the Twins pants!

Worse are the Twins unis with pinstripes on the pants and the beer league blue jerseys. Ugh.

Another cool, non-Sox, tidbit from that article:

For those keeping score at home: The Pirates did something similar in 1970, as they changed from flannels to double-knits for the second half of the season — immediately after the All-Star Game. The timed the changeover to coincide with the opening of Three Rivers Stadium (which had been slated to open on Memorial Day weekend, but construction delays pushed the grand opening back to mid-July).
I love Uni Watch.

Just piping in to to say that I loved our 2009-13 away look as well. It was the perfect combination of understated and timeless. I like navy being the dominant away color (pairing with grey the way red and white pair at home).

I liked it with the red letters and numbers but blue sleeves. That was a great look.

I wish they would go back to it, at least on the road unis. Of course the guy in the picture could make any uniform look good.
