I saw this a few days ago. I would have figured the runner would be called out for leaving the base path, I guess not though. Funny enough that the easiest way to remove the "skunk in the outfield" is with the hidden ball trick!

I'd love to know if anyone here knows this Portsmouth coach. Because it seems like a really douchey thing to do.

He's no longer the coach. He was an assistant coach at the time the center is centered on. He moved up to serve as HC for one year in 2007 and then moved on.
I guess I'll have to reread it. I thought he was inducted into the RI Hall of Fame as a coach.

Huh?

"EVERYBODY IN RHODE Island baseball called him Umpy, a nickname he'd inherited from his dad when the younger Ulmschneider started coaching in 1993. He was a volunteer assistant coach at first, earning his first paying job in 1998 and his first head-coaching job in 2000. In 2002, a bunch of incoming Portsmouth freshmen came to him and told him they were going to win Ulmschneider a state championship. Those freshmen were seniors in 2006."

Well now...I may live in Portsmouth now, but am not a long-term resident (I had just returned to Aquidneck Island in 2006 on a military re-location). So apologies and all that. I just know that he was not there after the 2007 season, and Portsmouth has had a succession of coaches since - including [I believe] a 4 or 5 period by Ryan Westmoreland's dad, Ron. And now that you mention it, I do remember Ulmschneider being inducted into the RIHoF a couple of years ago, I knew he was at Durfee at the time and mistakingly associated the honor more with his stint there.

In any case, I still love the article.
