Every year, there are players who just have a bad time playing baseball. To highlight these lowlights, SoSHBaseball has instituted the Shaq Thompson All-Star Team, looking at the bad in the minor leagues.

In our first installment, we look at the offensive offense in the International and Pacific Coast Leagues.

Nix isn’t the only former Major League to struggle in AAA this season. Mike Carp, who batted .175/.289/.230 for the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers in 2014, played just seven games for the Dodgers affiliate in Oklahoma City in 2015, going 2-for-22 with a double and a walk. Carp unwisely opted out of his deal with the Dodger, fishing for a Major League position. He continues to wait for a phone call. There’s always Japan.

Might Mike Carp now be in the early stages of
Jody Reed disease? Not that he could ever be
considered a peer of Reeds.

A return to the worst of the minor league year and the Shaq All-Stars. In this Edition, we look at the Pitching and Defense in AAA.

John Lannan had a eight year major league career, mostly with the Washington Nationals, but he has fallen on hard times this season in the PCL. Lannan, pitching for the Rockies affiliate in Albuquerque, has put up a nuclear line for the Isotopes. Over 139 innings, Lannan has given up 192 hits and 99 runs, numbers that are not likely to get him another bite at the majors next season.

Today we have the Shaq Thompson AA Offensive and the Pitching and Defensive All-Stars.

Cito Culver may well prove to be a defensive wizard for the New York Yankees. Certainly his 8 errors from his infield positions (SS, 3B and 2B) over 97 games indicates a steady glove. Which is good because the 32nd pick of the 2010 draft has not shown much of a bat. This season, in his first trip to the AA Trenton Thunder, Culver sported a line of .199/.249/.279 over 106 games. His highest OPS in a full season remains at .655 for the single A Charleston Riverdogs in 2013.

The Portland Sea Dogs hold the dubious distinction of having the worst starting rotation in AA baseball, perhaps, in all of minor league baseball. Of the six worst ERAs in the Eastern League, four of them belong to the Sea Dogs. Topping the stink pile is Luis Diaz, who put up a 2-10 record with a 5.47 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP over 27 starts. Justin Haley also started all 27 of the games he pitched in, going 5-16 with a 5.15 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.
