I would have preferred that scenario.

Care to explain this one?

I think he's saying that the Marlins are so bad, why the hell would Salty go there.

If you had told SOSHers a month or so ago that Salty and Stanton would be in the same lineup in 2014, this board would have been collectively gleeful.

Clearly the FO made the right decision to not offer a QO earlier in the offseason.

So market value is 3/21, clearly signing him for 1/14 (QO) would have been an overpay.

At that price it is debatable whether signing AJP was the right move. This is a deal that could have been easily moved if Vazquez or Swihart makes the jump in the next season or so while keeping continuity behind the plate, which I think has value. If those kids don't make that jump, we'll be in the same position next year.

If reports are true that he badly wanted to be back in Boston, it's possible this could have been a 3/18 type deal for the Sox.

I do not understand why the Sox didn't do this deal. I would have taken him back at 3/21 in a heartbeat. He will produce at a level worth 8-15+ million a year given his offense at the position. He's a 1-3 win player with the ability to be more than that if he continues to improve defensively and his bat, again, continues to improve as he enters his prime years.

There must be something about Salty that turned off the FO.  The benching after game 3 of the WS probably meant more than we realized.  If they wanted, they could have had Salty signed for very reasonable money and be able to ease Vasquez and even Swihart as backups and eventually into the starter's role.

You're assuming that this deal was available to the Sox.  It's quite possible that Salty and his agent wouldn't budge off of 3/27 or 3/30 and had to settle for 3/21 after the Sox ruined their leverage by agreeing to terms with Pierzynski.

Yesterday on Felger and Mazz, their producer said that he had heard from reliable sources that Salty was pissed about the World Series benchings and did not want to come back to the Sox.

If Ben had known this, Salty would have gotten the QO. Why doesn't the team have friends in the NSA?

Not necessarily. The QO was for $14.1M, that's a lot of money to not feel bad about sitting on the bench in the Series.

And I have no idea what your last sentence means.

He means he wishes the Sox had a spying agency that was able to intercept his conversations with friends that said he has no desire to come back, thus they give him the QO which he would decline which would open them to compensation when he signed elsewhere. If he were to accept it, though, I still think they have a better catcher for the dollars spent than AJP, but that's another debate.

Oh. He should take it up with TSH's Jimmy Stewart, not me.

This is some classy stuff from Salty:

By Jarrod Saltalamacchia

I was going to say that I’ve made the decision to take my talents to South Beach but I heard that someone took that line already. Seriously, I wanted to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the city of Boston, its fans, the Red Sox and especially my teammates for providing me the best three-plus years of my baseball life.

When I was first traded to the Red Sox in the late summer of 2010, I was thrilled and humbled to be able to join such a storied franchise in such a great city. But honestly, I never in my wildest expectations thought it would be the tremendous experience it turned out to be. This Southern boy became absolutely amazed at the warmth and hospitality that a New England town’s fans provided me and my family.

It's pretty obvious that this past season was one that was special in too many ways to count. Walking to Fenway Park every day to go to battle with teammates I loved, in front of the world’s greatest fans was something that I’ll cherish long after my playing days are over.

But I am now starting another chapter in my baseball life in a place that is actually and in reality, home. I’m very grateful for the opportunity the Marlins have provided and extremely excited to bring with me the lessons learned from my Boston experience.

So I close with once again thanking all of you for the opportunity to be small part of Boston Red Sox history. It was an unbelievable experience.

Wow, first SOSH post here.  In spite of the WS miscues, Salty ranks as one of my favorite Sox players on this season's team.  Before this season, it seemed that he would never be able to get past Captain Varitek's shadow.  But he was such a dependable force during the regular season and I sensed he was a subtle leader in the clubhouse.  What cements it for me was the picture of him, Pedroia, and Gomes sitting in the stands watching a ballgame during their off day. Maybe that shit happens more than we realize, but that image put such a big smile on my face and I thought not only are these guys great teammates, but they are friends and they love the game as much as we all do!

I think he was gassed at the end there and I am somewhat surprised that the FO didn't have the same opinion (meaning those deliberately chose not to retain him).  Maybe they all agreed it was time to move on and this was his chance to cash in, since by withholding the QO, he was able to get max market value.

I wish him the best of luck!  And In Ben We Trust!
