Why do major leaguers insist on sliding when trying to reach first base?It has been proven to be slower than running though the base. Slides should only be used to avoid a tag.

Is there a specific incident you're referring to? Generally I only see it when the pitcher is running to cover first base, in which case a tag is definitely a possibility.

Exactly. He was out on a close play and would probably have been safe if he had not slid.

Lofton dislocated his shoulder, Zimmer got his hand stepped on and broken. So yeah unless the pitcher is trying to tag you it's not a good idea.

Bogaerts's dive was in the top of the 11th on Tuesday. It was the second headfirst dive into first base in a span of three batters!

Holt led off the inning and dove into first base trying to beat the pitcher to the bag. (Holt was called safe, but on at least one replay Holt looked out, as his hand kind of floated over the bag and did not touch it. The Orioles did not challenge the call.)
