Jerez was drafted as an OF by the Sox in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft and failed miserably in multiple seasons spent in the GCL and NYPL. The Sox converted him to a relief pitcher last year and he's been promoted twice this year, starting at Greenville, making a stop in Salem, and now pitching in Portland.

BA just wrote up Jerez as a Helium Prospect to watch:

Now a 23-year-old lefthanded pitcher at Double-A Portland, Jerez originally signed with the Red Sox in the second round of the 2011 draft as a toolsy outfielder out of the same high school in Brooklyn that produced Yankees relief ace Dellin Betances.

Nothing clicked as a position player for Jerez—he hit .221 without a home run in three tries at short-season ball—so the Red Sox converted him to pitcher, and he’s been nothing but dominant since. He has fanned 61 hitters in as many innings at three stops this year and has set down lefties and righties with equal ease.

Jerez is armed with two plus pitches in his fastball, which has touched as high as 97 mph this year, and a true two-plane slider. He also has a changeup, which is a clear third pitch at this point.

Interesting prospect with an interesting story.

My son played against Jerez in high school -- Jerez was such a force on a loaded Grand Street team his senior year and looked a good two years older than any other kid in the PSAL. I don't remember him pitching a single inning in high school.

My boy pitched against Jerez only in a post-season All-Star game, after Jerez had been drafted by the Sox. I told my son I was rooting for Jerez. (Jerez fouled off two tough pitches before drawing a walk.)

Just for the sake of keeping this interesting story alive, as of today, Jerez in Portland has compiled the following line:

G    IP    H    R    ER    BB    K    ERA   WHIP
6     11   11    4      4      6      8    3.27     1.55

He has yet to give up a home run.

End of the month update for Jerez. So far this season he is blessed with good fielding behind him and has no unearned runs and he still has not given up a home run. His stats this season are:

G     IP      H    R    ER      BB      K    ERA   WHIP
11   19.2   20    7      7      12      13    3.20     1.63

Another month, another update for our Brooklyn native.

Compared with last month, his ERA is up but WHIP is down. Better control, good number of Ks, but letting in more runs.

Season stats for the southpaw so far are:

G     IP      H    R    ER      BB      K    ERA   WHIP
16   32     30    14     14     14      25    3.94     1.375

If you take out Jerez's 1.1ip, 7h, 8er performance earlier in the year, his season line is at 45.0ip, 38h, 10er, 41k/13bb, 2.00 era, 1.15 WHIP. He's been really good.
