    Baseball, baseball, whoo, whoo, whoo!

1 PM EST today against the Red Sox, on MLBN.

    Hicks, CF
    Torres, 2B
    Andujar, 3B
    Bird, 1B
    Frazier, LF
    Ford, DH
    Higashioka, C
    Wade, SS
    Lipka, RF

    Cortes SP

I am irrationally excited for a February spring training game, especially excited to see Clint and Bird and curious about Cortes, who had great numbers in the Dominican Winter League this winter.

Gleyber blasted a HR to dead center in his first AB (after the announcers were talking about how he needed to cut down his swing and make contact more, heh).

Bird ripped base hits off the wall in LF (double) and down the line that got to the wall (somehow a single) in his two ABs, he has put on (supposedly) 20 pounds of muscle and is not going to cede the 1B job easily.

Not much else of note, fun to watch Florial in CF a bit.

Voit with a RBI single (Glasnow) and a 3 run HR (Stanek) in the first 4 innings, he is a force of nature.

Wade is 3 for 3 after going 1-2 yesterday, off to a nice start to try to win the last bench spot. Three of those four hits are doubles, too, and after yesterday’s he stole third on the next pitch (on Leon).

Tulo homers off Stroman to lead off the game, opposite field inside the pole. One of these two teams is paying him $38M the next two seasons, and it's not NY.

Well pitched game from NY today, a combined 9 1 0 0 2 10 from Paxton/German/Cessa/Green/Diehl/Holder against a TOR lineup with most of their starters in for 2/3 of the game.

Today was rained out, I don't think there's another televised game until Sunday.

    Boo.

Bird with a three run opposite field HR in the 1st off Fulmer just now.

If they both stay red-hot, NY could theoretically let Bird and Voit split 1B/DH, Stanton to LF. They've said they plan to send one of them to AAA, but they're not locked into that personnel-wise (but that would mean both Clint Frazier and Tyler Wade to AAA).

NY scored 4 in the 1st, Chance Adams gave up 5 in the bottom of the inning. He is running out of ‘chances’, sorry.

Yikes, Acevedo hammered also a couple of innings later, he and Adams combined to give up 10 ER while getting three outs. That ain’t good.

Nobody else is in this thread because, I assume, we are all working and can't catch these games. I have very deliberately avoided all talk about this coming season. I'm less than enthusiastic about much of it as I don't think we have solved some of our obvious issues like who's on First. But I don't comment because: Cashman crafted what i considered an excellent team last year and then...exactly how many games did that team actually play ? The number is incredibly depressing. If our luck runs like last year, Cashman's best laid plans will again be frustrated. I still maintain that the belief that Bird can play a full year of quality ball is sheer madness, as for the rest perhaps hope and luck can balance out last season.

Don't agree with most of that but won't argue with you.

Tulo with his second spring HR in his 3rd AB, Bird with another hit making him 4 of 6 so far.

Also FWIW I haven't watched any of them live either, I watched the first 4-5 innings of the televised ones on DVR and the last couple of days the games haven't been televised.

JA Happ with 2 HRs allowed in 2 innings in his spring debut, but hard to get concerned about a veteran like that a month before the season. He is done for the day now.

Tulo and Voit have both looked good in the field too, even more crucial since somehow Andujar is still at 3B.

Andujars (lack of) defense would rule out Bird/voit sharing 1b/DH wouldn’t it? I thought the plan was to use Andujar at DH a bunch due to his defensive issues.

Bird would have to really go nuts this spring for them to not send him down, but if they wanted to keep both him and Voit up, you could see something like this if everyone is healthy, so for every 7 games (I will only include relevant positions):

    1B: Voit 5, Bird 2
    2B: Torres 4, LeMahieu 3
    SS: Tulo 5, Torres 2
    3B: Andujar 4, LeMahieu 2
    DH: Bird 3, Stanton 2, Andujar 2
    LF: Stanton 4, Gardner 3

That actually makes a lot of sense to me, but it's predicated on Bird looking like he did in spring training 2017. Clint Frazier and Tyler Wade are both hoping for that final roster spot too, Wade is also off to a great start so far this spring.

And yes, that team would be better off with a real 3B, Andujar at DH and Stanton in LF, but I don't make the decisions.

Gardner and Judge go back to back in one game to start it, Voit homers in the 1st in the other game, easy opposite field power:

Damn, Gardner goes deep for the second time today, both off Daniel Norris. It's not easy to hit two homers off the same pitcher in a game on March 3.

Anyone else see Albert Abreu pitch the last two innings? Wow, his stuff is impressive, he was facing mostly AA guys but FB up to 97, change and slider in the mid-80s and a sweet curve at 79. Hopefully he can get some innings under his belt this season, I'd guess he'll start in AA but he is already on the 40 man so always on the fringe of possibility when there is an opening.

Presumably German and Loaisiga are the top contenders for 6th/7th SP to start the season, both should leapfrog Cessa who can stay as 8th RP until proven otherwise. Abreu is on the 40 man too and looked amazing last time out as I said, but he and Acevedo are well behind those first two. Mike King also might be in contention, but he was shut down still last I heard. CC is suspended 5 games also, and possibly a bit behind anyway, so maybe German and Loaisiga both are in at least first time through.

FWIW, both German and Loaisiga were on Matt Eddy's short list of SPs to break out this season and that was before this Severino news. Both had over 10 K/9 in MLB last year, so the stuff is there.

Loaisiga looked impressive again through two innings, a solo HR to the very strong O'Neill but 5 Ks, 2 1 1 1 1 5, including Wong/Martinez both swinging to start the game.

Then the third was ground out, legit double, then a long fly to left center lost by a befuddled Clint, maybe in the sun (Gardner catches this, Stanton probably too), and then he hit his pitch count and Harvey allowed his runners to score, but a lot to continue to build off. If he and German can both get to 80 quality pitches by Opening Day, that would be a big help.

Florial with a single and a three run HR today, 1.061 OPS so far this spring. The HR was off Victor Arano, who had a sub-3 ERA in relief for PHI last year.

Florial is still so young (turned 21 in November) that there was a question whether he'd start this year in high A Tampa again or AA Trenton, but he has looked very impressive this spring, so hopefully Trenton.

Not too much notable in today's games so instead I will relay this insane story about Florial that Judge told the NY Post today:

"“We were playing catch the other day,’’ Judge said, “and he was playing catch with somebody and I was playing catch with [Giancarlo] Stanton, right before we did an infield-outfield.’’

Florial said to Judge, “Let’s throw it over the fence.’’

Judge looked at his young teammate, smiled and said, “From here? All the way out past center field?’ Florial said, ‘Yeah.’ I said, all right, and I crow-hopped and threw it and my ball barely just scraped over the wall. He threw that thing dang near on Dale Mabry out there. It was about 50 feet past mine. It was impressive.’’

Judge added, “It shows you what kind of skillset he has.’’"

Off day today for NY, today's big news was a Lindsay Adler piece in The Athletic that Kahnle did indeed pitch hurt all last season and he now seems most or all of the way back to the form that had Olney rank him as a top 17 reliever in all of MLB coming into 2018.

"Kahnle has looked good this spring, sitting around 96 on his fastball, reaching 97 mph a few times, too. He has not allowed a run over four outings and has struck out six batters. Manager Aaron Boone’s biggest takeaway from the outings he’s seen is that Kahnle is no longer overthrowing.

“It’s actually really nice to see the ball come out with ease this year,” Kahnle says."

If Kahnle is actually back to 2017 form, that is six NY relievers with All-Star capability (Chapman, Betances, Britton, Ottavino, Green). Add in Holder and one of Cessa/German/Loaisiga to an eight man bullpen and this is why I think Gio Gonzalez would be a good fit for this team (although I am OK with not signing him too). He is maybe only a 4-5 inning guy in the AL East but they would have so many guys backing him up and if anyone knows how to fully maximize 100 pitches to wiggle through 5 innings, it's Gio. :)

He might be insisting on two years still, I can't believe if he'd take a one year deal, he'd still be out there. He had a 6.4 bWAR in 2017, he is only 33 and he has started 30+ games the last 4 seasons and 8 of the last 9, tough times.

Aaron Hicks had a cortisone shot on Monday, which makes NY 2 for 2 this spring with giving veterans extensions and them immediately getting/needing cortisone shots. That ain't good, if you're scoring at home.

Judge and Gardner both homered again today, lot of Yankee hitters wishing the season could start already. 8 guys in today's box score have OPSs over .900 so far this spring:

    Gardner 1.526 (!)
    Judge 1.423
    Bird 1.029
Higashioka 1.025 (he homered today too, off Mychal Givens)
    Andujar .983 (3-3 today, hitting .444)
    Wade .972
Florial .931 (he looks so good, really hope he starts in AA and not high A again)
    Voit .930

Today's highlight was a long Stanton blast off Hector Neris, over the second 'r' in 'Steinbrenner' on top of the left field scoreboard. The game was not televised, so normally mild-mannered Bryan Hoch drew us an estimated flight plan:

He has a 1.479 OPS and has yet to single (6 HRs, 4 2Bs). The really cool thing is he has been experimenting with a no stride swing and he has hit a few out to center this way.

NY playing simultaneous split squad games now, both will be televised later on MLBN. Between the two games, six Yankees have homered so far: Voit, Andujar, Bird, Tulo and Gleyber, plus Zack Zehner again.

On the pitching side, Paxton hit his pitch count in the 5th before giving up any hits and Loaisiga pitched 3 scoreless in the other game. Betances got all three guys he faced including striking out Bryce Harper, but is still having velocity issues, peaking at 92 today (he has said multiple times this spring that his velocity is always slow and he generally isn't at full strength until May, but still a mild concern).
