That’s the unknown question*raises eyebrow*
who needs to come onto the 40 man?
Players on the 60-day DL do not count on the 40-man, so they will indeed need a spot for Hernandez when the time comes, though I don't think this trade is about Hernandez at all.Even with Hernandez activated, they’d still have only 39 on the 40 man roster. Most likely pitcher to be called up? Maybe Beeks, who is already on the 40... don’t see any other candidates.
Leon can't be optioned either. Though a 4th catcher on the 40-man would be a good idea and good use of the open spot. It wouldn't be Butler because he too is out of options. Not really sure of any position players they’d call up. No need for Travis, who is on the 40 man anyway. I doubt they’d option Leon for Butler, and they can’t option Swihart (which would otherwise make sense to keep getting him PAs).
It would seem I miscounted. Kept coming up with 39 including Hernandez (but not Elias).Players on the 60-day DL do not count on the 40-man, so they will indeed need a spot for Hernandez when the time comes, though I don't think this trade is about Hernandez at all.
This is why I like the list on soxprospects.com. They number the players on the active 40-man but still list those on the DL.It would seem I miscounted. Kept coming up with 39 including Hernandez (but not Elias).
There's nothing cooking. Elias had no future with the Red Sox, the Mariners came calling, and Dombrowski had no reason to say no (as he says in the article, the Red Sox are pretty flush with left handed pitchers).
There's no reason to think this was done because Dombrowski initiated anything, or had reason to. When the time comes to add Hernandez back to the roster (or some other acquisition or call-up), Elias easily could have been DFAed to make the space. It didn't have to be done now from the Red Sox' perspective.
