The more that comes out about this, or less I should say, the sillier you're looking. You just got WayBackVazquez'ed hard. It happens to the best of us. But he's right. This was an event that was handled horrendously by the swimmers and then handled much, much worse by Brazil. Shaking the guy down for a donation is beyond reprehensible and saying otherwise, just because it went to a good place, is ducking from the facts.

I did agree that the donation was terrible, I thought that was clear.

This case has shown the exponential decay of intelligence. The swimmers were stupid for drunkenly urinating behind the gas station (perhaps a 3/10 on the stupid scale). The station's security guards then upped the ante by pulling guns and essentially shaking down the swimmers (6/10?). This gets followed up by Lochte's half-truth story on national television (7/10?). Finally we have the Brazilian judicial system upping the ante further with the $11,000 bribe... Errr fine (9/10).

Edit: yes I know that those numbers are not exponential

The offensive part here is the Chuck Stuartesqe promulgation of a widely held stereotype that these Games were in a dangerous place. When Lochte claimed to be robbed, the collective media and casual observers believed and said "see, toldja so", just like Stuart's story of being assaulted by random black men in a black neighborhood gained general initial acceptance.

The problem isn't that Lochte "lied", it's that so many were so quick to believe him.

Well, it's a widely-held stereotype that these Olympics were held in a dangerous place because these Olympics were held in a dangerous place.

People would have been quick to believe him if he'd said that he was shaken down at gunpoint by armed security guards if he'd told them that, too. They'd believe him because police, soldiers, and security shoot and kill civilians at an alarming pace. And because the police are corrupt, and even during the Olympics will cover up criminality that reflects badly upon them. And in my opinion, that's worse than being robbed at gunpoint by those suffering under miserable economic conditions in the favelas. He obviously embellished the story because to tell the full story he would have had to include his boorish and embarrassing behavior, not because the true story would have--in my opinion--reflected any less poorly on Brazil.

Frankly, I don't think it's a "problem" that we're quick to believe someone who comes forward to assert that he was a victim of crime. Especially when he's not naming any person in particular. Such allegations, should be investigated, as they were here, but I really don't think someone should feel bad about believing someone was robbed at gunpoint, especially in a place where people are routinely robbed at gunpoint.

LOL, so Lochte is actually being charged with a crime, and they will undoubtedly try him in absentia. 6,000 unsolved murders a year in Brazil, but at least they're dropping the hammer here.

You're a lawyer, right? If they convict him in absentia, could it affect his ability to travel internationally? Could, say, authorities in Brazil report him to Interpol as a wanted fugitive?

This is getting ridiculous. The dude has already been roasted in the public arena and lost four sponsorships worth about a million bucks. Let it go, Rio.

Especially if there really was minimal damage and they were basically extorted by armed rent-a-cops as now looks to be the case. This is the time for everyone to cut losses and move on not double down. There's literally nothing to gain.

Well, there is one thing to gain. Rio can prove they are tough on "crime".

Not a criminal lawyer. While I suppose there may be a few other banana republics willing to deny an American citizen a visa because Brazil considers him a lying liar, I doubt he's in any danger of getting extradited by a country with any actual respect for justice.

And to deliver opiate to the Brazilian masses while its corrupt Congress impeaches its maybe corrupt President who accuses it of acting to prevent her from investigating its corruption.

Yeah, this is just a shitshow. At first, I had some faith in these clowns. Clearly, my mistake.

The thing is, even public opinion here has turned on the police. This just serves no purpose whatsoever.
