resetting a iPhone to factory settings remotely

My son moved to California taking with him his iPhone 6 and leaving in his wake an old iPhone 5 with a cracked screen. My wife, meanwhile, was using an antiquated dumb phone. So I had the cracked screen repaired and have swapped out her old phone on my account and inserted the iPhone 5 in its place.

The problem is that the iPhone is full of apps and files that my wife will never use and is tied into my son's email account, which is suboptimal at best. I've tried resetting it to its original factory settings, but the phone wants my son's Apple ID in order to complete the process. The problem, he says, is that he no longer uses an Apple ID to identify himself, he uses his fingerprint. Since he's in California and I'm in Massachusetts, it's impractical for him to come by and swipe his fingerprint onto the iPhone.

He says that there is an way to wipe the iPhone remotely using one of his other Apple devices. If he does this, what happens when I turn the iPhone back on? Will it treat me like a new owner and ask me to enter a new password? That would be fine. I just don''t want to end up with a locked device that can't be used.

Any words of advice would be most appreciated.
