This is the thread where YOU, yes YOU, can tell the world (or at least the people who read this thread) who you think the Red Sox top Prospects are. List your top 5, or 10, or 20 or 40. Differentiate it any way you like. Tell us who you think is our next Xander Bogaerts.

My top 5 (I'm discounting Bogaerts and Workman as they are already fully ensconced in the majors):

1. Henry Owens - dynamic arm, very high ceiling.  Lefty.  Always valuable.
2. Garin Cecchini - incredible on-base skills.  Power should fill out to 12-15 hr per year.
3. Jackie Bradley Jr. - still think he has a very bright MLB future despite a few setbacks.
4. Christian Vazquez - unbelievable arm, plus plus defender.  Has the potential to be a useful-to-solid bat, but his defense will be elite.
5. Matt Barnes - Power arm, excellent stuff.  I think of the starting RHP prospects (Barnes, Ranaudo, Webster, etc.), he has the best shot at being outstanding.

Just my two cents.

Betts, Swihart, Owens, Cecchini, Bradley.  All will be major league stars.

Until he graduates from a prospect, Xander tops the list. Then Owens, Cecchini, Webster, Barnes

I believe we will get MLB contributions from Webster, Britton, and RDR this year.

I'm going to move on from Xander, who should exhaust his eligibility soon.  Same for JBJ.  Also excluding Workman as he doesn't appear likely to end up back in Pawtucket.

1. Owens
2. Cecchini
3. Swihart
4. Ranaudo
5. Barnes
6. Betts
7. Webster
8. Ball
9. Vazquez
10. Britton
11. Margot
12. Stankiewicz
13. Marrero
14. Devers
15. Callahan
16. Mercedes
17. Rijo
18. Brentz
19, Coyle
20. Hassan

Ball and Betts could make major leaps this year. I think Buttery and maybe Light will be the surprise prospect that comes out of nowhere. If Vazquez is able to put up a good average and solid power in the majors (I doubt it but...) then he would be at the very worst top 3 on this list.

The wrong side of the bridge....
Leaving Xander, JBJ and Workman out of it, for reasons others have stated:

1. Owens
2. Swihart
3. Cecchini
4. Betts
5. Ranaudo
6. Vazquez
7. Barnes
8. Webster
9. Marrero
10. Devers

I think you could put the top three in almost any order, and maybe that even goes for the top four.

I'm at the stage with Webster where he's guilty until proven innocent of being incapable of commanding his stuff well enough to succeed in MLB. Obviously the stuff is great, and I hope I'm wrong.

I'm probably a little too giddy about Devers putting him this high, but that upside is intoxicating.

I think Owens will be a top 20 prospect by years end. I think he's clearly number 1 (post X).

1. Owens
2. Betts
3. Cecchini
4. Swihart
5. Ranaudo
6. Barnes
7. Webster
8. Vazquez
9. Ball
10. Margot

Touche?
1. Owens -- scouting reports match stats
2. Cecchini -- on-base skills should carry him, if he sticks at 3B he's very valuable
3. Betts -- athleticism and offensive skills at 2B
4. Swihart -- hardest to rank, could easily slot in at #2 by end of the season. Might have 2nd highest ceiling in system.
5. Barnes -- just based on what I've read, scouting reports are better than Ranaudo's
6. Webster -- taking the stuff over consistency, right now.
7. Ranaudo -- I'm seeing a #3/4 profile
8. Ball -- hard to judge right now, but you have to trust the upside
9. Vazquez -- high floor, lower ceiling
10. Marrero -- kid would probably be anointed "SS of the future" in 20 farm systems right now.
11. Mercedes -- this is my lottery ticket.

Slightly above average still, 12 to 14 range for me.  There is still a LOT to be excited about after those 3.

1. Cecchini - Unlikely to be a superstar but very likely to be a high quality contributor
2. Owens - Only #2 bc there are still some real questions about fastball command and how his stuff will play at the major league level.
3. Swihart - Bat and athleticism really impressive for a catcher.
4. Betts - Love him but will lose value if moved to a corner OF.
5. Vazquez - Could be even higher depending on what you think of the data suggesting elite framing skills and what that means from a value perspective.
6. Barnes - Talent is impressive, results against tougher competition not completely there yet, could make a huge leap this year.
7. Webster - See Barnes.
8. Ranaudo - See Webster.

For me, Swihart is now the top prospect in the system. Athletic, switch-hitting catchers who ceiling at plus defenders and plus bats are pretty rare -- and he's so athletic that he can move to multiple positions (2nd, 3rd, OF) if ever it were to come to that.

Cecchini, Owens, Vazquez, and Betts round out my top 5. MMP, I think, is right to second-tier the top pitching prospects, and I think you can pretty much rank them in any order. Owens moves to the front-tier on a higher upside, but to me also has the highest risk.

I suppose I'd say the biggest wildcard is Vazquez's bat. If it comes around as some people think it will, and as I think it will, he's an everyday guy, no questions asked. He's already major-league ready as a backup or even as a light platoon, but as long as the hitting is in development, you wouldn't want to expose him. If the bat does come, and let's say something like .255/.335/.400 is not an outlandish ceiling for him, he's going to catch 120 games a year and be a core up-the-middle player. To me, the major reason to keep him in Pawtucket is just that -- to see if he can develop offensively to the point of being an everyday guy.

Swihart is not nearly as advanced as Vazquez defensively, which is to be expected considering he is learning it on the job, but I also don't think he will ever profile at Vazquez's defensive ceiling. There are some things, particularly pitch-blocking, that he might eventually do better because the athleticism is real -- not just good for a catcher, but in some areas high-caliber for a big leaguer. His bat will be better and more valuable because it's a switch, and it will be better, I think, than even a lot of the people really high on him think. It's a tough deal to learn how to hit professionally, and to do it while switching, and while learning the most demanding position on the field, is an even greater challenge. And yet he's doing it, which suggests to me something special when it all comes together. I think it will be more than good enough to carry a position switch if that becomes necessary.

I guess the short takeaway is Swihart is an elite athlete making greater progress than even his excellent stats suggest, and Vazquez is already an elite defensive catcher with a chance to be an everyday player. Swihart is number 1 for me because he has the highest offensive celling, and because of his positional versatility.

I wanted to take a second to point out that while there are a number of players who I didn't end up including in my top 20, I think several of them could force their way in by the end of the season.  Noe Ramirez, Corey Littrell, Cody Kukuk, Miles Smith, Nick Longhi and Ty Buttrey all have a chance to break out and move up a considerable amount by the end of the season.  Without Xander, JBJ and Workman, the system looks a bit thinner, but it could be really difficult to decide on a top 20 in another 5 or 6 months.

FWIW....I was at the game last night talking with Mike Toomey a scout for the Royals, he also rates Swihart above Owens and Betts.
