So why tender Owens a contract if you were only going to put him on waivers less than a week later?
Because they think he'll probably clear waivers this close to the rule 5, so they can outright him and keep him in the system without having to use a 40 man spot on him.

Such a sad fall from grace for Owens. Hope he catches on with another team that can get him back to where he was 2’years ago. Another lesson in prospect hoarding.
Was there a deal that didn't get made because the Red Sox wouldn't part with Henry Owens?

Were there actual reports of an Owens and Swihart for Hamels deal or was it just informed speculation? YMMV on Hamels, but thus far holding on to those two hasn't really worked out for Boston. Could still change, I suppose.

Assuming that was an actual possible deal, of course.

I might be remembering incorrectly, but I'm pretty sure the Hamels deal was Swihart, Owens, and some guy named Mookie.
