He made that catch look so casual.  As quickly as Betts has picked up CF (truly remarkable in its own right given he was a career infielder), it's hard not to get rose-colored glasses when you see JBJ out there in CF.  His ability to read balls off the bat is preternatural - even the most challenging ones like those coming straight at the CF.

My wife and I were sitting in the 2nd row about halfway down the right field line at Comerica. When JBJ made this catch, the air literlly went out of the stadium

Mookie leads the league in facial expressiveness. His charisma is an intangible asset worth considering when other teams come knocking with trade proposals.

So are you thinking the Mets might offer DeGrom & Syndergaard?

Mookie goes from you, you, you, Xander to aw shucks, what the heck, everything is all right. This team and it's up the middle, and the OF corners defense.

It's worth watching the video all the way to the end to see Hill watching the catch and yelling what looks like "Holy shit," followed by Dombrowski exchanging can-you-believe-that looks with Tek.

I guess he didn't learn from the last time he went over the wall in a game that was out of reach. Much as I admire the play, he needs to be carefully taught that you don't always want to risk a concussion, like in a 7 run game when you're team is just a couple games from elimination.

Of course he learned, and said so much post game.  He was going to catch that ball & keep himself in the park this time. You could see his hand come up and wrap around the wall to make sure he did.  Well done, Mookie!

Probably do as much good as telling Julian Edelman to not dive full horizontal at the pylon for a touchdown when the Pats have a two TD lead, with head hunting safeties happy for the chance to destroy his head.

Remember the Miguel Cairo homer that Manny robbed in 04? That was hilarious. Cairo had circled the bases and returned to the dugout before he noticed.

It's incredible to think about the kind of defense we're likely to see all season from two-thirds of our outfield.

Yeah, my immediate thought on seeing that was "JBJ would have been camped under that." Well, maybe not quite but it wouldn't have been a great leaping catch either. What did Price say?

JD Drew would have glided over, camped under the ball and made it look routine. (That man took the best routes to an outfield ball I've ever seen.)

Still exciting to see Mookie develop.

Nobody would have "camped under" that ball. Its trajectory was too low and too hard for that phrase to apply. It's reasonable to say that a Drew or a Victorino would have read the ball better off the bat and been able to make a routine-looking catch moving back on the ball. But there would have been no camping involved.

A thousand blessings be upon your head, and welcome to SoSH!

If you still have your gif-maker handy, could you produce a separate one that is just Christian's reaction shot -- the fist pump, the BAM MUCHACHO, and that full circle he formed with his hands meeting over his head. It's the heart-on-the-sleeve expressiveness that makes this play so much like Pedroia's 2007 F*ck Yeah celebration.

someone else already has this instance covered, but for gif-making from an MLB video

    1) find the highlight on MLB's website
    2) in Chrome, press ctrl+shift+i and go to "network"
    3) find the resource whose "type" is video/mp4
    4) go to imgur.com and at the top click upload images and select "Video to GIF" and paste the URL from step 3
    5) select what you want, it's limited to a five-second clip
    6) ???
    7) profit

    This is amazing!
There is a Vine out there (which I tried to post yesterday to no avail) of Brock Holt doing his best Kimbrel impersonation. It's classic, if someone would be kind enough to to a search of BrockHolt on twitter to see it and share it!

    BAM MUCHACHO!

I absolutely love it. This kid has so much confidence and is so amazing defensively. I'm sure there are already at least a handful of runs that are prevented simply because teams don't want to risk their baserunners trying to run on this guy.

My favorite part of that play was Cairo, thinking he'd just hit a HR, motioning to high-five the on-deck hitter— I think it was Kenny Lofton? — and Lofton sort of apathetically high-fiving him (i.e. basically lacking the motivation to break it to Cairo that his ball had been caught.)

The arm is sick, sure, but what I love is the cat-like spring with which Vazquez moves from crouch to throw. I love that and the all-consuming joy on his face after recording an out on the basepaths. Dude clearly lives to book outs.

it's all part of the same package, and Vazquez is as elite as they come in all three of crouch-to-stand, glove-to-hand, and throwing mechanics. I don't know that I've ever seen a single catcher who was elite in all three of those areas, usually even a defense guy has to settle for 2 of the 3.

Quick grab of JBJ's nice grab in the 1st tonight
    [IMG]

Edit to add in Holt's (circuitously routed) play from the 6th tonight. While he may not be the most efficient LF, he's certainly getting the job done.

p.s. if these gifs are too large for some folks, lemme know and I'll work on making them smaller.
