Ben Cherington, declined the opportunity to continue as GM, but has agreed to assist Dombrowski during the transition.

MYRTLE BEACH!!!!
I saw the Speir tweets and had to click to make sure it wasn't a fake account. Not that the news was incredible, but it happened with no leaks, or I've been living in a cave.

Wow.

Ben to stay in as an assistant during the transition. He was offered the opportunity to stay on as gm and declined according to weei.

Well, Dombrowski's known for his superb trading ability.  First up - finding a way to move one or both of Hanley/Sandoval.

Kind of surprising Cherington declined to stay, not that I'm all broken up about it.  It's not like Cherington hasn't answered to a guy before in Lucchino.

Just announced on the broadcast. They say Cherington declined the opportunity to continue as GM.
Have to imagine his read on the situation was that him "staying on" would be on a trial basis at best.

Honestly not surprised, this seemed to be the direction things were pointing once the Lucchino stuff was announced.

The statement read on the broadcast is positive.  Sends the right message.

Sorry Ben.  You caught lighting in a bottle once, but since then it hasn't been working.

That is a surprise, it will sure give them a different look(tm) in the front office.

Almost as surprising is that it took Soxhop almost 5 minutes to start the thread. I was wondering if he was dead.

No word on Dipoto so far, but there is an opening for the GM position. I'm not thrilled with Dombrowski (I would have preferred someone a bit younger), but I could see a tandem of him and Dipoto complementing each other and working well.

Obviously something was going to change.

I'm assuming that Farrell will be gone when the season is over now.  DD will want to pick his own guy.

Smells like PR to me. I don't buy this at all. Why would Dombrowski want to have the old regime in place? Doesn't pass the smell test.

Completely agree. Dom with Wren scares me. Dom with DiPoto may be the perfect combo

Also, given that Dombrowski will have a more specific baseball-ops role than Lucchino did, staying on as GM would effectively be a reduction in responsibility even with the same job title.

Lucchino will be gone, Cherington will be gone. If Allard Baird survives this transition, then I don't even know what, just... I mean that is the spot that most needs upgrading, surely Dombrowski will take care of business there and get someone good in, right?

Cherington did a great job with the farm system and won a title. But the big contracts almost all look really bad right now. Of course, ownership had to give approval on the biggest ones, and Cherington's director of player personnel surely gave the thumbs up on them too. You just can't afford to miss on a lot of big money long term contracts, and the Red Sox have missed on a lot of them over the last 5 years.

Great move. Ben was over his head I think. I am not a fan of Frank Wren. Dipoto might be given first crack.

Ben had to go. Following that rather fluky 2013 run (imo), it was just too much bad in too short a time period to risk continuing down that path.

That said, not sure how i feel yet about DD being the guy that is going to stop the bleeding.

Inevitable question--Does he fire Farrell given the recent cancer diagnosis?
I think Farrell gets offered a FO consultant/evaluator job. When you get down to it, that's where folks saw his career headed long-term, anyway. Even without the cancer diagnosis.

Does Ben end up in Batimore with Duquette? Or Chicago with Theo?

Am I insane for thinking Ben will have no problem finding a GM gig next year?

Well, I guess I need a new name. Ben's track record has been spotty, but I always felt like he would turn it around and become of the better GMs. He probably ends up in Chicago, but I really hope we make the right decision this go round.

Wren doesn't really have a great track record with FA signings. I know he has history with DD but I'm not thrilled about him being considered for the role of GM.

They need to clean house, but hopefully they keep Eddie Romero around or give him a promotion.  International scouting has been the lone constant bright spot under this regime.

So does this mean our farm system is now trade chips?

I think Dombrowski has a solid track record building through the farm.  The last few years have been an extra special circumstance trying to win one for the Pizza Ghoul.

I don't really care for Domrowski but I thought aside from the Beckett trade the Cherington era was bad. So long as Dombrowski doesn't trade the minor league talent it can only be better.
