It's Saban's Polian shuffle.  He no likey Oregon et al.  So he started whining about the health implications of up tempo and seems disinclined to let it go.

I like Saban, but this is hilarious.  "Work my ass off for all these 5-stars on D, and I'll be goddamned if the chip Kellys are going to mess me up."

I hate this idea too, but FWIW, it's not actually that onerous. Even super fast paced offenses rarely hit the 10 second mark.

It's not snapping the ball within 10 seconds, the issue is you get the offense to the line within those first few seconds which stops the defenses from subsituting because if you catch them subbing out you snap it and they have too many men on field or are out of position. This rule allows those substitutions because they know there cannot be a snap.

That's fair. Yeah, this is a dumb idea. I'm reasonably optimistic it won't go through.

The snap rules are interesting, in that they aren't really consistent. Clock stops on 1st down but not other downs; for out of bounds, clock starts at the ref's ready-to-play signal (like on 1st down), except in the final two minutes, then it starts on the snap. I could see them implement this only after first down or out of bounds, or incompletions. I wouldn't want it for every play though.

I think it's mainly about Saban's obsession with using situational personnel groups and making defensive calls from the sidelines, areas where he thinks he has a decided schematic advantage over most offenses.

I love how the rule change says that if the offense snaps to quickly, it's a "delay of game" penalty. This is totally because Saban got owned by Stoops' hurry up offense in the Sugar Bowl.

If you can't beat 'em, change the rules, while citing bogus evidence such as the integrity of the game and player safety (without exactly providing anything resembling empirical evidence).

Coming on the heels of the Iron Bowl, with Gus Malzahn on the schedule every year. I suspect that's a more immediate concern than Kelly or Stoops.
