Papi already got the Hank Aaron Award (best hitter). Not the most prestigious award but seems the most fitting. It was only his second-ever win (first was 2005).

I'm pulling for Betts for MVP on the antiquated "player who does the most to help a team make playoffs" school of thought, but the Hank Aaron award is an easy call for Trout. His OPS+ is 11 points higher than Ortiz and his wRC+ is 13 points higher.

Is it possible that Sanchez has a shot? Factoring in his defense, I wonder

Not sure what you're missing. Ortiz has already won the Hank Aaron award and they had like a ceremony and everything.

Which one more likely - Porcello or Betts? Gotta be Rick, right?

After all the warm fuzzy talk with the three AL candidates, one of the MLBN guys asked Showalter about not using Britton in the play in game. He said sure he would have used him if he knew what the outcome was going to be. Duh! If I bought AAPL in 1999... You ever hear of preventing runs and extending the game as far as you can, with one of the great relievers of all time? Main point is questioning the formerly known as great bullpen manager about his non-use of the great reliever lives on.

I'm more disappointed in Adam Eaton and Jose Ramirez getting votes over Pedroia Xander and Porcello than I am at Betts not winning

Trout deserves 3 or 4 by now, honestly.

Also happy for Beltre for getting a first vote

From Chad Finn..George King..yes that George King of Pedro infamy had Betts and Papi first and second on his ballot.

I think Daniel Murphy got hosed bigger time than Verlander. Murphy had a higher OBP and a higher SLG and struck out 1/3 as much. Second base is higher on the defensive spectrum than 3B. And on the "value to team" side, Murphy carried the Nats offense almost singlehandedly.

At a minimum, it isn't all all hard to justify putting Murphy first. That writer has nothing to be ashamed of.

Murphy had 117 fewer plate appearances. And while second base may be a more difficult defensive position, by most measures, Murphy isn't particularly good at it.
