I am incredibly excited about the thought of a Butler/Gilmore CB tandem. I love the signing -- and hope that BB finds a way to hang onto/sign Butler. Watching the Pats shutdown teams on D is more fun than watching them score 40 on teams for me. Watching them shutdown teams AND score 40 on teams is so 2007.

Steelers dont have as much money as many teams (25th seems to be the area) so that could be good.
Pats are around 8th.

Not sure if this includes recent signings.

Stephon. It's supposed to be Stephen. Or Steven. Or even Steve.
Spells first name wrong...WNB

Seriously, I like the signing depending on what happens with Butts or Ryan.

So, you'd underbid Cooks so much that not only would the Saints reject the offer, it'd probably ruin Payton and Belichick's friendship?
That and multi-player trades don't really happen in the NFL. Hell, single player for single player trades barely happen.

I know this is a joke but that is how it's pronounced. He's not a Steve.

WEEI reported earlier that Pats are close to bringing back a DB...Duron Harmon. Bummer of a drop-off from what I thought they were about to say. I love times Ten the idea of Gilmore and Butler in the same defensive backfield. Alas.

Edit autocorrect harmons name fuck fuck fuck

Imagine how upset you'll get when you discover there's already a separate thread for Harmon

Yeah, it's Stephan, right?
And yeah, I am just messing around. I couldn't really give 2 craps how ppl spell or pronounce their names. Doesn't mean I can't make fun of them, right?

First off, the difference between Cooks and any combo of any non-Edelman WR on the Pats roster is much greater than the difference between Butler and Gilmore. Second, I doubt that the Patriots are done exploring the CB market to replace Ryan, if he leaves. Third, I'd rather be faced with potentially investing in a 25 year old WR after two years of reasonable cost than a 27 year old CB at a far higher cost over the next 2+ years. This is smart cap/roster management.
It's not the difference between Butler and Gilmore, it's the difference between Butler and Rowe / Jones / Coleman (assuming Ryan is signing elsewhere). You are right on point 2 that they would probably add someone if they trade Butler.

As it stood when I wrote that post, they had Butler and Gilmore on the field all the time and would only match up Rowe in the slot. Losing Butler there makes a big hole and I think the offense is going to be fine with or without Cooks (given the RBs and TE help too).

If Cooks has two big years I don't think they're re-signing him for what he'd demand, so I don't think the long-term view plays into this much.

Sounds like it's probably basically a 3-year deal in the 13-14 range, which is fine. About what you'd expect after hearing the initial numbers, I think.

Usually BB doesn't overload both secondary and DL positions with money. If he spends more in the secondary, it's because he needs to buy the DL some time to get at the QB. When he has a solid DL he sometimes doesn't spend as much in the secondary. I hope this doesn't mean that he is worried about Hightower coming back.</chicken little>

It could mean that he is loading up or upgrading the secondary/CB D with the Falcons offense in the rear view mirror, and potentially in front of them again. I know I would, but so far Foxboro isn't ringing my phone for help. My battery was dead though, so who knows.

Miguel's tweet on likely structure of Gilmore.

For those not able to see it -- $8.5m cap hit this year and $11.5m next year. Virtually impossible to cut for the next two years. In 2019, it costs $12m to cut, reduced by $4 million each year thereafter.

Wow. That's a lot.

Even these numbers aren't structure yet, though. How much of that guarantee is the signing bonus vs. roster bonuses etc.
That's a lot of coin. Considerably more guarantee than Bouye.
Not to say it isn't worth it. UFAs aren't cheap though
The cap is 15 percent higher than when revis was signed and almost a 20 percent higher than 2014 when revis got 12 from us.

Gilmore is a playmaker I think 3rd in ints since he got in the league. Only 26 younger than Malcolm, they must consider him a better player.

Apologies if I'm regurgitating a thought already stated upthread and I missed it, but I'm not buying that this was to replace Butler, but rather than compliment him, if even for a single season and then let Malcolm Go. Or franchise and trade him.

I think it's entirely in the realm of possibility that BB looked at the schedule for next season and saw: Ryan, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Brees, likely Romo one way or another, Newton, Winston etc and realized all of those guys are better than anyone other than Wilson they saw in the regular season this year. So he doubled down on CB for a year.

That's more guaranteed money than the Jets gave Revis.
Speaking of Revis, is he still in play? A revitalized reinspired Revis playing for another championship AWA future HOF consideration would be a great option on the cheap (at CB now that Ryan is gone and Butler might be going, as well as at safety).

His days of playing corner are over, and he would not play over DMC, Chung or Harmon at safety.

Stephon Gilmore's Patriots contract comes with $31 million fully guaranteed at signing - an $18m signing bonus and fully guaranteed salaries of $4.5m and $8.5m in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Newly-signed Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore's wife had a baby daughter on the day he signed his five-year, $65 million contract with the Patriots late last week. Gilmore said he was able to witness the birth, which came 45 minutes after he landed back at home from his trip to New England to sign the deal. The baby's name is Gisele. No, it's not named after Tom Brady's wife, Gisele Bundchen. Gilmore said he and his wife Gabrielle were looking for a name that started with the letter G.
