You can't make the club from the tub
SSS and all but I’m sensing increasingly less tolerance for the tub, even at thin positions, and it wasn’t that great around here to begin with.

So offseason at WR:
Brandin Cooks - traded
Danny Amendola - left in free agency
Julian Edelman - suspended
Jordan Matthews - hurt, released
Malcolm Mitchell - hurt, released
Kenny Britt - hurt, released
Chris Hogan - has looked pretty good
Phillip Dorsett - I guess he's the #2 WR until Edelman gets back?
Cordarelle Patterson - I guess he's the #3 WR until Edelman gets back?
Eric Decker - he was a good player until he lost his hands in that snowblower accident (I'm assuming)
Devin Lucien - like it's not crazy if he makes the team at this point
Riley McCarron - punt returner by default
Braxton Berrios - another hurt guy
Paul Turner - has he even played yet?
Matt Slater - might get run at WR at this point

So long as some combo of Gronk, Hogan, Edelman, White and Burkhead stay healthy they should be fine in the passing game.
Britt was going to be a 6-7th option for them at best.

All of those guys you mentioned have missed significant time with injuries...

That said, in Bill we trust.

I hope it means Decker has improved over the last 10 days over what had been reported.

I don't think the WR corps is such a big issue as long as the Pats have Gronk at TE. Makes up for a lot.
Agreed. Offense will be fine as long as Gronk is healthy, which is obviously the scary part. If he goes down, and we all know the likelihood of that, we’re turning back the clock to 2013.

Hopefully Dorsett and Patterson capitalize on the big opportunity they’ve been given.

I dont get the doesnt seem like a fit comment. We are light on WR. He is the best (arguably) on the street. Seems like no worse a system and chemistry "fit" than Randy Moss, Corey Dillon. Chad Johnson or any other malcontent that Belichick has rolled the dice on. I suspect this would be more Ocho than Randy, but last I checked, Patriots managed to bounce back from his test balloon and release with very few ill effects.

Dez isn't considered a tight route runner, he was a physical specimen. Brady seems to like guys that run precise routes. Dez would be awesome in the red zone, but not sure how he works between the 20s when he wouldn't have much time to pick things up.

He also has a reputation for having a low football IQ and having to be woken up in meetings. Plus he's slow and can't really get separation, so he and Decker would be redundant.

Dez lead the league in drops last year, didn't he? He had a bunch.
His drop rate was second to Amari Cooper (his total was very high). A few articles blamed the sun glare at Cowboys stadium...

EDIT: wrong about the drop rate rank, he's ranked #7 from last year (and that was a big change from the previous year):

That's a pretty significant caveat, given that Edelman is suspended the first four weeks and Burkhead is already hurt. If the other team only has three pass-catchers they need to respect, it's not going to be that hard to defend the pass no matter how good those three players are. With total health, this unit is fine, but the margin for injury is small unless one of the other guys (Dorsett? Patterson? Decker? Hollister?) steps forward.

If Dez had anything left some-one (The Raiders) would have taken a flyer on him. He is cooked, and I am sure that every NFL scout and talent evaluator have texted each other about it.
It's not just that he's cooked but also that his expectations far exceed his remaining ability. He wants a one-year pillow contract to re-establish his value but there doesn't appear to be a market for that (Dez trying to re-establish value = A LOT of bitching on the sidelines). I doubt anyone wants that headache considering he's not really the type to put in the work anyway. It's possible his market opens up a bit as the season goes along and players get injured but he's not going to be on a roster Week 1.

He really should have taken that Ravens offer. That's the best he's going to get at this point.

Dez may end up being a Week 2 and beyond guy as vested veteran (4+ years in league) salaries are not guaranteed if you're not on the Week 1 roster. From Week 2 on, I think they only have 25% of the prorated salary guaranteed. Thus, you could sign him for $5 million (steep number for example purposes only) salary Week 2 and only have to cover his cost for $1.25 million if you cut him after a couple of weeks.

Dez can’t get separation. At all. His last full year he feasted on terrible corners and was horrendous against quality corners.
