The #Patriots have agreed to terms with G Shaq Mason on a five-year extension worth up to $50 million, sources informed of the agreement tell me and @HerbieTeope. Former fourth-round pick gets top-10 guard money.

Edit:
@HerbieTeope
Patriots signed G Shaq Mason to a 5-year, $50 million contract extension with $23.5 million guaranteed, source tells @MikeGarafolo and me. Mason, who will earn close to $30 million over first three years of new deal, now among highest-paid guards in NFL. Key OL piece staying put.

kind of surprised as well, and even without knowing the guarantees this looks like a great deal because multiple guards recently signed deals for higher AAV.

I do wonder the injury to Wynn incentivized the team to act because they do not want to go into next off-season with both a tackle and guard being free agents and no idea if they can replace at least one of them with this year's first-round pick.

5/50 can’t be bad, any way you slice it. That’s a stunning deal, job well done!

Seems like a fair deal for both sides. Mason probably would have done better in FA with a good season but the Wynn injury may have impacted his thinking a bit. Trent Brown will be fascinating to watch this year. Would be great to bring him back next year so that Wynn can be eased into things. If not, they’ll need to draft an OT high.

This OL has potential to be really good.

Seems to me to be a bit much of an investment for an interior lineman, who's not THAT dominant, but In Bill We Trust.

Hope there's enough left for Gronk.

When Logan Mankins extended with New England in 2011, he was the top paid guard in the NFL, and he signed for $30MM guaranteed and $51MM over 6 years. $30.5MM was paid out in the first three years. The cap was $120MM at the time.

7 years later, Shaq Mason got $23.5MM guaranteed (although $30MM in the first 3 years) and signed for 5 years and $50MM. The cap has gone up almost 48% in that time to $177MM.

That seems like good value in comparison.

sure, but BB also called Logan Mankins "the best guard I ever coached", and if there's one man not prone to overstatement, it's him. Mason is a great player who I'm glad to have on the line for a while yet, but this isn't like locking up Gronk, or arguably even Hightower.

Yeah, $10 MM a year sounds big, but this is a second-tier G contract in the current market. Andrew Norwell just signed for 5 years, $66.5 MM with $30 MM guaranteed. T.J. Lang signed for 3 years, $28.5 MM last year, $19 MM guaranteed, and he's 30. Mason just turned 25 today. So, happy birthday I guess.
