Heck of a shot by Schuster to get 2 in the 3rd
And he's at the center of a doping investigation now.
I believe if the B sample confirms the result and he’s DQ’d that Norway will take the bronze. China would’ve made the playoffs without Russia there.
This USA Canada match is really dramatic. Schuster threw a great shot to sit 2, and Koe was forced into a tough combo and hit it thick for a USA steal. 5-3 after 6
For everything that Shuster's team does wrong, I'm blaming the baseball caps they're wearing.
7-7 after 10. Free curling! That shot when the US guy flubbed his release, I probably do that at least once an end.
Shuster really, really tried to blow that last shot in the 11th, but his sweepers bailed him out by thismuch.
What is wrong with both Canadian teams, btw? Very surprising non-dominance by them both.
Of all the sports to dope, curling seems to be one of the last ones where it would help. Then I remember the furious sweeping.
The US women have a bit of momentum and absolutely crushed China, putting up 3 in the first end and 4 in the third end. They are tied for 4th place right now, but have matches with South Korea and Sweden coming up (currently 1 and 2 in the standings), so have their work cut out for them to advance to the semis.
It's not just the sweeping. Strength matters for deliveries (less effort to deliver big weight, I'd guess more core strength makes for better balance on deliveries) as does endurance (being able to repeat your delivery in the last end).
When everyone keeps saying he got in shape, we really all just mean better shape, right? Dude is still at least thirty pounds over weight.
I can't believe how tense I feel while watching curling. Even when the team I'm supporting is doing well, it feels like half of the time I'm watching the action through my fingers while wincing, waiting to see who will screw up what next.
By the way, here's a great recap/ranking of Norwegian men's curling pants from recent Olympiads:
Shuster in tears being interviewed by Trenni following the victory over Canada.
I was trying to figure out what he said - something about Dan Jansen? Doesn't he have a bronze from 2006 though (from before he was skip)? The pressure of the Olympics is clearly a problem for him.
Huge win and some terrific curling by Shuster and George. Massive set of games tonight @ 12 AM.
Yep. Pete Fenson was skip.
Yeah wow, I'm watching the replay now and Shuster was absolutely on fire. Hope he keeps it up and pulls off the classic Olympic Redemption Story. But I can also totally see him tightening back up now that they've gotten themselves back into it and the games are critical instead of "well we're probably done so I'll just go for it and play loose".
Canada were awful down the stretch and lose a game that will definitely keep them out and may tank the USA women’s chances. USA needs to beat GBR and to have South Korea beat Japan to get into the playoff. Only one spot left now and only two teams left to compete for it.
I think USA needs to beat Sweden and Switzerland needs to beat Japan for USA to advance (for the women at least).
Right, right. Women play Sweden not GBR. I had the men’s game on the brain. If Canada could have beaten GBR tonight, then all USA would have needed was a win to get in to the tiebreaker.
Anyway, it is pretty straightforward now. Women need a win and a Japan loss to get a chance at Japan in the tie breaker. Japan basically gets three chances to advance to the medal round — win today, USA loss, or win the tie break.
Schuster is Schustering - again.
Edit: I am routing for the guy. But damn - It’s not easy.
Never mind me. He just hit a good shot on the hammer for 3.
And GBR concedes. Hot damn! Though I’m admittedly not sure what needs to happen for USA to win the tiebreaker.
USA are through to the semis, GB vs Swiss in tiebreaker (US beat both GB and Swiss in RR so avoid tiebreaker)
Hands up if you saw that coming.
Wow. I saw the Brits get two consecutive steals before I went to bed and figured I knew where things were headed. Didn't even consider they'd also avoid the tiebreaker. Would be a great story if they can medal.
US women had a chance to take the lead in the 9th end, but the hammer was much too heavy. And I have no idea what they're doing in the 10th end.
Well if Shuster ever sees me on the street he can give me a nice big FBBBTTTTT I suppose. Still the medal round left to Shuster though!
Nice job Shuster and Co. In my face!
Indeed. I am also chastened.
The female skip got some Shuster disease
British curling chatter is incredibly entertaining.
Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky will give his Olympic bronze medal back.
Krushelnitsky accepts that there was a “formal breach” of the rules and will waive his right to a hearing at the Court of Arbitration. But denies intentionally cheating, and:
Not in great shape now with Canada likely having the hammer in two of the last three ends.
This is a bloodsport right now.
Canada pulls a Shuster! US steals two in the 8th.
Wow, Shuster with the clutch shot and Koe with two bad ones. Steal of 2 and the US is in business.
If this keeps up we're not gonna be able to use Shuster as a verb anymore, or at least not in the same way.
Now just play for the force and come home with hammer up 1.
I thought Koe was an assassin. Instead it was schuster
By throwing the second one in instead of guarding, the US is definitely playing for the force, not the steal.
Horrible hog there.
Canada may have to concede an empty frame just to keep the hammer.
Wow - just the one!
Gutsy call. I would’ve straight hit, let them try to blank, and forced them to try to get two in the 10th.
Not sure why Shuster didn’t just take out the Canada stone on his last throw and force a 0 or 1 call for Canada.
My goodness that was stupid. Why even give them a 10% chance at two?
I kind of get it. He’s always playing not to lose and winds up getting burned. It’s time to say “fuck it I’m throwing deep.”
Because being even with the hammer and being 2 up without the hammer are pretty equivalent positions - both equally advantageous. It was a risk worth taking.
The ultimate Shuster here would be Canada lying two, and the US having an open draw to the middle of the house with the final stone to win, and then Shuster doing what Koe did in the eighth end. Just throwing that out here right now...
