They all eat and buy merchandise, it adds up. Plus viewership increases = more advertiser dollars
They're all buying Todd Frazier merchandise.

That would be as useful as my Jason Bay Red Sox merchandise.

And they give you cash, which is just as good as money.
First you get the cash, then you get the power, then you get the women...

You suspect the quote mattered to me apart from using it as a chance to say first you get the cas, then you get the power, then you get the women.

Thank you for your assistance however.

"According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Yankees' trade talks for Sonny Gray have stalled because the Athletics are seeking one of either Clint Frazier or Gleyber Torres.

That's a deal breaker for the Yankees, who are telling teams that Frazier and Torres are both off limits. The A's are also said to have interest in Estevan Florial, James Kaprielian and Jorge Mateo, though only as part of a package also featuring Frazier or Torres."

Beane is out of his mind.

Beane is out of his mind.
He's not really under any pressure to trade Gray, though. Why shouldn't he be asking for the moon? If he's intent on getting a deal done, he can push it as hard as he likes right up until 3:30 or so on Monday then reengage with teams who drew the line to see who blinks a little and throws in a little more value to separate themselves from the pack.

Well, Gray is pitching Sunday which is always something of a risk, but other than that, agree with you. On the flip side, Cashman is reportedly already the high bidder and if someone else can top a Florial/Acevedo/3rd piece/4th piece offer, more power to them. I'd guess that Cashman has a backup deal for a mediocre rental 5th SP ready if Gray doesn't work out.

Three days left, kind of nervous what Cashman might give up now that NY is playing well again and back into 1st at least temporarily.

If they don't end up with Gray, I think they'll probably try to get a rental like Lance Lynn or Jaime Garcia, but again probably/hopefully only if the price is reasonable. Darvish doesn't seem to make any sense, not only is he a rental and TEX will want a lot for him, but he has been terrible the last few weeks.

Headley is hitting better than Alonso and also Holliday may get pushed out of the DH role to 1B somewhat once Hicks is back, so I don't think they need another 1B.

Also reports like this seem pretty crazy, hard to imagine how good that Yankee bullpen would be if they add yet another impact quality arm:

Dan Federico‏ @RealDanFederico 6m6 minutes ago

Source: #Yankees remain interested in LHP Brad Hand and Justin Wilson. Hand will be more expensive but neither will come cheap
These seem like investments at this point. Cashman might be willing to overpay on a SP if he knows he can easily fill the prospect bucket unloading a couple of RP this winter.

The other thought that keeps crossing my mind is Girardi's bullpen management since the Betances and Chapman struggles began. He has been making some odd decisions. Going back to Clippard, he insisted on keeping him in games and bringing him into games where he had no business pitching. Same with Green. The CC game saw CC go into the 5th. Rather than go Kahnle, Robertson, Betances, and Chapman, he fuddled around and tried to give Green two innings who let Sabathia's runs score plus another of his own.

Girardi is one of the best managers in the game but his pen management this year has been confusing at times. He still gets benefit of the doubt, but these trade rumors for bullpen arms make me wonder if he's driving them because he doesn't trust his guys.

Agreed that Girardi's pen management is confusing at times, but Chad Green has been quietly dominant with the best numbers of any of those relievers this year (at least before that outing). With the makeup of this current pen, Green should be used for multiple innings if possible, I thought that was perfect usage of him, and it just didn't work. Kahnle coming in for one out and throwing four pitches and then being replaced on the other hand, now that to me is a waste.

Your 2017 bullpen thread is perfect for this discussion, Jon. And I am sure we will go there after July 31 as the bullpen is arguably this team's greatest weapon.
Looking over Kahnle's game logs, he doesn't pitch back-to-back often (7 times this season), and just 4 times getting more than 3 outs. 42 appearances, 40 innings. Do they have to be careful with warming him up too often? Joe has been known to break this Cardinal rule of bullpen usage.
In a pennant race, usage restrictions can be lifted. But as you point out in your bullpen thread, this bullpen has two platoons of quality setup men, and closers. That's a weapon. But you need two or three starters going 7 innings in that scenario during each time through the rotation. Repeated short starts can tire out any bullpen, even this one.

Ken Rosenthal with a good piece on the latest in the Gray negotiations, except I think he is wrong on the potential personnel also, because as I've said before I don't think NY can move both Florial and Mateo:

I would offer something like Florial or Mateo, Acevedo or Littell, McKinney or Cave, and Mitchell or Cessa, Beane can pick the one he prefers in each case. If that isn't enough, I'd see what Lance Lynn (a rental) cost and make that deal if it's not too much, otherwise just go with Domingo German again next time around.

18 teams under 500, you'd think there would be more than Grey, Verlander and Darvish available. Maybe we'll see a surprise

They can't be giving up Littell for Garcia, who was just traded for much less last week, but that is what's being rumored. That seems deeply un-Cashman-esque, I guess we'll see.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense to me, either. Unless Morosi, et al are putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5

It's also a little confusing that they would really be trying to get two SPs, they've said Montgomery and Severino aren't on innings limits but maybe they were lying for leverage.

Really not a fan of this, but they do need Garcia this year and this does clear a 40 man spot (Littell) in the offseason. I will be very surprised if Gray happens now, I think Cashman slightly overpaid here to keep the prospects that would have had to go in that deal.

So I guess if you think of it like Littell for two months of Garcia plus Jake Cave (a borderline 40 man protect who is destroying AAA currently), it's somewhat better. Littell was amazing in A/AA this year, but scouts still seem somewhat low on that translating to the bigs.

Wow, Littell and Dietrich Enns for Garcia, so that is two 40 man spots cleared this winter. Enns is another SP who has been fantastic in the minors but scouts are doubtful if it will translate, good luck to both.

If the Yankees also still get Gray or Darvish (Don't think anyone is actually all that interested in Verlander unless the Tigers are eating a lot of salary), that's a huge trade season for Cashman overall.

1. Extended the pen so it can cover the team from the 6th on every night if need be.
2. Plugged one of the corner infield holes with a solid league average option with some pop. (while keeping him from the Sox who were also looking to plug a corner infield hole)
3. Added a stable back end of the rotation arm.
4. (potentially) Added a good middle of the rotation arm.

The Yankees were lacking for star power. They had positions with really low floors so Cashman has been focused on bringing those up. No need for a blockbuster when you have Aaron Judge taking the league by storm, Gary Sanchez behind the plate, Clint Frazier busting on to the scene and Luis Severino taking a big step forward this year.

The damage that a No. 5 starter like Caleb Smith does to the bullpen with short starts has to be factored in to the cost of renting Garcia.
Also, Yanks can't keep all of these prospects. Freeing up two 40-man roster slots is a good thing.

No way they are paying a rental price for Darvish IMO, I doubt Gray gets done either unless Beane caves on the price somewhat.

I will update the 40 man thread after the deadline.

I am cautiously optimistic about this deal. I have always liked Garcia for some reason. And there is a giant hole in the rotation. If Gray is acquired I like it less, but can still understand why the move was made.

Littel seems to be one of the guys that is highly regarded by fans, but not prospect evaluators. There were also facing a 40 man roster crunch decision with him. That crunch is going to happen again, and like last season, I am optimistic that Cash will be able to spin a decent older prospect for a younger shiny penny like Littel.

Yeah, don't like to see Littell go but NY has plenty of higher ceiling SP prospects, nice to see none of them move yet (Adams, Sheffield, Acevedo, Tate, etc.).

I'm pretty underwhelmed. Garcia is thoroughly mediocre.
But he will give you 5-7 innings consistently at the back of the rotation, and NY hasn't been able to find someone to do that since Pineda went down. Like I said, I think it's about clearing 40 man space as much as anything.

I'm just not sold on Gray. I hope the Yankees stick to their apparent valuation of him as a #3, sometimes #2 starter, and aren't afraid to walk away.

So now it's back to the 2018 and beyond rotation, Garcia doesn't change that as he is a FA.

NY has Severino, Montgomery, and three open spots. Tanaka may not opt out, Sabathia would I'm sure love to come back, Adams may be ready, but they will have three spots to fill (two if Tanaka doesn't opt out). This is where a cost-controlled Gray starts to make more sense, as a bridge until more SP prospects are ready.

CC would have to work for around $7 million in 2018. Yanks want to get under the cap.
Gray, at the right cost in prospects, is the best fit going forward. Pretty confident Cashman will properly play his cards with Beane.

The reason the Twins gave up next to nothing was because they agreed to pay his remaining salary, which we aren't. On it's face, they are just paying $4m for some prospects. I don't think we would pay $4m to keep Little and Enns.

I don't mind this deal. As mentioned above, the 5th slot is killing the bullpen for the rest of the week, every week. He's a lefty, which is a bonus. Plus, while the Yankees have been drafting top excellent position player after player, they never seem to get it right with pitching (see the 40+ relievers they tried to use in the last few years). We all saw a great late 1980s team fall short due to no pitching, I don't wanna see that happen with this group.

Sure, I understand and agree with this. I know a big part of Gray's allure is for the rotation next season and beyond; I'm just concerned about his injury history after last season and worried that the Yankees may not be locking down a rotation spot as much as we hope. I don't think Gray is so special a talent that he is worth much of an overpay. But I know he has value. I don't expect Cashman to 'win' a deal and get him for a bargain or anything.

Pretty confident Cashman will properly play his cards with Beane.
Agree with this too. I have a lot of confidence in Cashman.

A deal between these two teams makes too much sense.

Would the Yankees give up Kaprielian to get Gray? Hope not.
If Kaprielian was a Sox prospect, I'd give him up in a hearbeat for Gray, and I don't even like Gray that much. At this point there's no reason to assume he's every going to get healthy enough to produce on the field at the major league level and even if he does, it won't be for long.
