NY September call-ups

Starting this because two high-ceiling arms already on NY's 40 man roster are on the comeback trail and pitched tonight in the minors (Loaisiga in Trenton, Albert Abreu in Tampa) and a third will be joining them soon (Acevedo, also in Trenton, I think). Those three and Domingo German would all be great potential emergency long men in September, I think, and all four are on the 40 man already, Chance Adams also.

Of pitchers not on the 40 man, Sheffield obviously we are all hoping gets at least a few starts. Stephan Tarpley is my big minor league relief crush after NY traded Cody Carroll, he is a lefty NY got from PIT in the Ivan Nova deal who they got away with not protecting last winter and he has gotten even better this year. He throws multiple innings usually (up to 3.2 so far in AAA) and has amazing numbers at AA and AAA, 1.78 ERA in 63 innings, .158 BAA. He will almost certainly be protected this time around so maybe they can find a spot for him now. Also Nestor Cortes was a rule 5 returnee mid-April from the Orioles who is slowly getting into a groove in the AAA rotation, 9 of his last 12 starts going back to the start of June he has allowed 1 ER or less.

I think Tyler Wade is maybe the only potentially helpful position player not hurt right now, they need Judge and Sanchez and Clint back. Luke Voit can come back, whoopee. Why hasn't Cashman traded for Granderson yet?

He should've had Granderson the day Judge was tol it would be 3 weeks

He's tailor made for Yankee Stadium, and I have a feeling he would get the Yankee rejuvenation spell that seems to infect many old timers

I forgot Gio Urshela who NY got in a minor league trade from TOR recently, and who is a defensive wizard at 3B and would be a great late inning replacement for Andujar, he could even make a postseason roster potentially. He is not on the 40 man but seems like they would try to squeeze him in.

Domingo German is slowly ramping up, 3 innings in high A Tampa yesterday, 3 0 0 0 1 5 on 38 pitches. Maybe he's ready for a higher level? :)

And Loaisiga is up to 49 pitches in AA in his last outing on Wed, 4 3 1 1 1 3, 49 pitches.

Hopefully NY has one or both of these guys for the SEA/OAK/MIN road trip starting next week.

NY needs two 40 man spots for Urshela and Sheffield, I think. They have one open currently and Shane Robinson is very DFAable once they bring Wade up as a spare OF.

Also I didn't mention Ryan Bollinger, who is a 27 year old lefty in the AA rotation and already on the 40 man and has pitched well in AA the last couple months. He is not considered much of a prospect, but he could come up too as an emergency long lefty.

Actually I think Bollinger has come up at least once but I can't seem to find any stats. Guess he was a one and done guy. Up one day down the next.. just curious if he is any relation to Bryan Bollinger the Yanks pitcher in the 1990s?

Bollinger got DFAd tonight to clear a 40 man spot for Hechavarria, also NY announced that Cessa, Wade and Tarpley will be called up tomorrow, plus Sanchez activated and McCutchen joining them, so that will put them at 31 players for now. They need to clear a 40 man spot for Tarpley, presumably that will be the much-anticipated end of Sugar Shane Robinson.

Loaisiga and German really should be on the plane to Oakland on Monday. Sheffield's being called up seems more in question now with a 40 man crunch and some underwhelming relief results from him so far. Adams and Acevedo are both on the 40 man and should be here at some point too.

So that leaves nine guys on the 40 man roster not up yet, assuming Robinson goes for Tarpley:

Pitchers likely to come up: Loaisiga, German, Adams, Acevedo
DL: Chapman, Judge, Frazier
Too raw: Abreu, Estrada

Hard to find a 40 man spot for Sheffield, I guess they could promote Estrada and retroactively put him on the 60 day DL (he has pretty much been out all year) but not sure it is worth starting his clock for that. Not looking good, Justus, unless I am missing something.

Was really looking forward to seeing Justus this year. Hopefully this ill timed move to the bullpen does not screw up his future. Why even move him to the bullpen if his long term future is as a starter?

I think he was getting near his innings limit and they were hoping to give him a chance to get his feet wet.

But actually he had a great relief outing last night (2.1 perfect in a must-win game, 4 Ks, 25 pitches) and might still get called up, maybe after Scranton is done with the playoffs.
