Gardner is hurting after being HBP in the first inning yesterday, he said he would have come out of the game then but he wanted to stay in for A-Rod's finale.

A-Rod may be gone from the Yankees clubhouse but his locker looks as if he never left. His nameplate is still in place, his uniform jerseys and windbreakers are still on hangers and a half-dozen pairs of spikes are on his shelf, along with two baseballs and a stack of mail. And the five photos of him with his two young daughters are still affixed to the side wall. You'd almost think he was coming back.

JA or others - what's C. Green's upside? Does he have the stuff to be a 2 someday?

It's hard to say, he has great stuff and has absolutely dominated in AAA this year (1.52 ERA in 94 innings), but has never been an especially highly touted prospect. NY got him from DET last winter in the Justin Wilson deal, and Cessa (the other young SP they got) was a bigger prospect. I think having Sanchez as his catcher tonight has really helped, as a lot of his success this year in AAA came with Sanchez catching, so they know each other pretty well.

I do think that tonight combined with Severino's struggles has earned him a bunch more starts this season, even if Eovaldi comes back.

MLB.com has him as NY's #21 prospect currently, here's their writeup:

Chad Green | Rank: 21 (Preseason: NR)
Team: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (AAA)ETA: 2016Position: RHPAge: 25 DOB: 05/24/1991Bats: L Throws: RHeight: 6' 3" Weight: 210 lb.
Drafted: 2013, 11th (336) - DET

Scouting grades:
Fastball: 65 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 45

Though he was the No. 1 starter on Louisville's 2013 College World Series team ahead of third-rounders Dace Kime (Indians) and Jeff Thompson (Tigers), Green surprisingly lasted until Detroit took him in the 11th round that June. He reached Double-A in three decent if not overly impressive seasons in the Tigers system, then came to the Yankees along with Luis Cessa in a trade for Justin Wilson last December. Green's velocity has been better than ever since the deal, leading New York to call him up in May, June and July.

Green's fastball already was his best pitch when he worked at 90-94 mph with some occasional life. Now he's sitting at 93-95 mph and touching 97. He commands his heater well and delivers it on a steep downhill plane, making it even more effective.

Green's upside is limited because neither his slider nor changeup is better than average. That said, he has a high floor as a No. 4 starter because of his fastball, his ability to fill the strike zone and his sturdy frame built for a workhorse.

That's ok, we need #4 starters too. And #5 and ..... :)

Very in-depth piece by Chad Jennings on NY's possible Sept call-ups:

http://www.lohud.com/story/sports/m...ng-ahead-yankees-september-call-ups/88972420/

The one relatively small thing he is wrong about is that Giovanny Gallegos was never actually in AA, he was assigned there for a day because of a numbers crunch, never left the clubhouse and was added back to the AAA roster today, pitching 2.1 strong for the win. He just turned 25, he's certainly an option for Sept call-up based on his numbers, not sure about 40 man ramifications but a 85/16 K/BB ratio in 67 innings and a 1.47 ERA is intriguing.

NY had to let Diego Moreno go today because of that AAA pitcher crunch today. If he never makes it back up for NY or anyone else, he had a pretty insanely unique career, 10 innings total pitched but somehow that included one of the alltime regular season great relief performances, coming in in the first in late July on the road in Texas to replace an incompetent Capuano (is there another kind?) and hold it at 5-0 down, then he somehow held TEX hitless for 5.1 innings while NY scored an unanswered 19 runs. Yes, that is correct. Farewell, sweet Diego, I will remember that one fondly.

Somehow not a peep from the Yankees or any of their writers as to who is coming up tomorrow, even though they need at least one outfielder and 2-3 relievers. Jonathan Holder's high school tweeted a congrats to him coming up, I will still believe that when they see it but the back of the bullpen has been a mess for a few years, so it's never too soon to start auditioning guys if you think they are legit potential solutions.

()

My latest guess is Severino, Goody, Yates (stashed in rookie ball currently, not AAA), Refsnyder, plus I guess Eric Young, Jr. to pinch-run, then more guys once the Scranton season is over (Higashioka deserves it even if he almost never plays as the fourth catcher). Holder I mentioned above, Mason Williams could maybe help too, but he should pile up as many ABs as he can in AAA since he's only at 160 yet again this year. He is 7 for 14 with a walk in the last three games, though...

Also Girardi will probably want a third lefty in the pen, there are a bunch of options. Pazos is probably the favorite although he's been very wild in limited time in AAA this year, but they really liked him in September last year. I would be curious to see Enns, who has been shifted to the bullpen already because of innings and who needs to be added to the 40 man this winter or be exposed anyway.

This list was correct, plus Holder, who Cashman talked about changing his mind on over the last few days:

“I wrestled back and forth with it, but the bottom line is we are 2 1/2 out with a month to go and [Holder] is better than some guys we have already promoted,” Cashman said. “He’s earned the right to be here. It was a roster issue that he wasn’t coming. But this will get his feet wet. He will get some exposure and we will find out what he is capable of.

“If he is what he has been this year, then he is going to be in our pen next year anyway. This gives our 2016 team our best players while Holder gets the benefit of development like [Aaron] Judge or (Tyler) Austin. He gets some growing pains out of the way. We get an advance viewpoint of him in crisis. So, I just decided to go ahead and deal with the roster crunch in the winter.”

"Yankees starter Chad Green has a sprained UCL and a strained flexor tendon of his right elbow. Green said he thinks he will avoid Tommy John surgery. He is unsure how long he will be out. He is scheduled for further evaluations."

I figured this was to DH against some of the lefties coming up, but he's had a big reverse split the last two seasons (he hits much better against lefties for his career, though).
